Yeah, you can't get the alk tree nuts... 
The pillbugs don't give you experience because you could level relatively quickly if they did. The "leaper" gives you defense because you need at least 10 or so to go south, and it's hard to find all the potions and such...
That whole dungeon was really poorly planned. The rest of the game just wasn't planned at all; I simply set out with the idea that Dink Jr. has to chase Ridge through the (rather bug-filled and confusing) Village of Exiles.
Also, if you encounter any actual bugs, try near the bottom of this thread for a list of known problems.
