G9 Wishlist (Closed)
G9 (or Generation 9) has been an oft-promised and well-delayed upgrade to this web site. The idea is to improve how things look and function.
I finally figured out what I've been doing wrong for the past two-and-a-half-years, and I think things might actually happen soon.
Do not be optimistic. This is roughly the 6th or 7th time this has happened.
If you would like to report any feature requests or bugs in the current website, please do so in this thread.
Thanks!

hmm, maybe a "favorite files" list or something
A link from the "File Discussion" of a file x, to its download page, and vice-versa.
And make it unable to vote twice (while only registering the vote once, of course) for DotM/DotY/Polls. In the poll-area, you could show a diagram with Poll Results. Yes I have stolen this idea from other forum software, but it makes no sense to show the vote option when you've already voted, and I like this solution For DotM, you could do something similar as what happens now when the voting expires.
I still don't get the sorting order in the PM outbox. I'd do it the other way around.
Also, I demand a larger input field for PMs.

How 'bout dont count the highest and lowest reviews towards an average score if it has more than five or so? Mabye just to much work for nothing much, but it would certianly be usefull here.
dang... I have to rewrite this after forgeting to hit submit.
Two things:
Mutltiple message deletionm, tickbox style! Maybe even a way to put two or three senders on an outgoing message, although that could start contributing to spam...
A way to take the Horrible, Tolerable, Fair, Good, Exceptional scores, add up the number of results for each catagory, and put them in (a) graph/columns to show where the review scores are located. It would make it easier for people to spot reviews that don't really jive with the rest of the scores, just drastically changing the average score. PLus, it's easier to understand for most people than to see a standard deviation of the scores.

More popups, more popunders, sparkly distracting images, 3 second .wav files on repeat background music, warez, porn, links on the front page to adult dating sites.
Or maybe a more customizable profile, with like computer specs etc., loads of communities do it and it's actually quite interesting to read everyone's stuff www.ampedesports.com www.gotfrag.com www.sk-gaming.com www.nip-gaming.com to name a few xxxx love and kisses xxxx

Proper rankings (more than just peasant for the non-staff people), as requested by many.
If anything just add a couple of more rankings for non-staff people...
A knight rank for people who have contributed significantly to the DN with high quality or above average D-Mods and files.
A squire rank for people who have contributed some average or below average D-Mods and files.
I don't think people should have a higher rank than peasant just for being able to post more than the next dinker on the forums.
EDIT: People who submit trash or just plain crappy files should remain peasants. Therefore they would have to release a half-way decent file to gain a rank..... otherwise keep it the same as it is now.

how about a "point whore" rank? yes, yes i think we need that. to shut all these people the hell up! fudgeing status junkies, i swear. the world revolves around social status. just BE YOURSELF.
I know I have run most/all of these by you before, but I am simply driving the point home.
Annihilation: Annihilate blogs. Annihilate the complaint box. Perhaps annihilate the stories board. Maybe annihilate previews as well; who actually reads them?
As for actual additions...
Implement a search function for the news archives.
Fix the background of the Features page and Help page. Also, maybe revamp the Help page slightly to be more appropriate for 1.08.
Update the About page.
Links page - update maybe, but with the buttons in the sidebar, is this page even necessary?
Maybe throw in screenshots for any D-Mods that don't have any, though I'm too lazy to look into that at the moment.
Ensure that users creating a new account actually see the rules before they can finalize an account.
Mention on the Submitting page that MP3s cannot be included with a D-Mod and must be packed separately, if you plan on enforcing this rule.
Allow file sorting by category.
Let me check pending files.
"Featured Review" feature - do it. Maybe require that more than one staff member (three?) must nominate a review for it to be featured.
Sort files by Category. Also add Date Added listings on the file pages, and allow sorting by that.

I am a smiley man...so I guess I would vote for more smileys.
I am also a avatar man, so maybe a truly customizable avatar would be cool.
And finally, I am a "Fun Stuff" guy. Maybe a page for backgrounds, Pc themes, various skins for various applications. You know what I am talking bout.

I agree with Tal for once... I think that his post pretty much covers anything that I could have added to this thread.
Many good points by Tal, I'm supporting each one (especially the annihilation of blogs and previews and updating the links).
As far as giving different ranks for peasants... why? If you do it for posting this-or-that-much, you'll have the point whoring back. If you give a pretty star to someone who released stuff, you'll have people releasing more one-screen D-Mods such as "Forest of Dangers" which don't contribute to anything. We've already got nice pictures beneath the names, I'm sure we can manage. Don't do the ranks

Just remembered another thing.
<code></code> tags (or [code] [/code] or both... or whatever).
If I want to type DinkC now, any indentation is lost due to HTML-behaviour. Also things seem to screw up when editing a post which has DinkC. Newlines get lost for some reason.

Well, I've got a number of suggestions:
Previews: Auto-delete them if they aren't updated after three months or so. Most of the previews are about DMODs that have long since abandoned by the people who wrote them, if the author hasn't left the community already. I think this is better then removing the previews completely, though that wouldn't exactly sadden me greatly...
Please fix the ¤t_sprite problem, each time I edit my post it changes. into ¤t_sprite...
Maybe a birthdaycalendar might be nice for the events part of the site.
And I have to agree with magicman, a link between a file's download page and it's discussion page would be great.

I do. They are often useful and make me prepare for the Dmod or file, or tell me if a tool useful for me to download. Keep reviews please!
Oh, the other points are good ones, though.
EDIT: What the hell?! A bug! When I reply to the main post, it says Tal posted the first post, while in the real topic, Redink1 did!

I said previews, not reviews. Reviews are nifty and here to stay.
He probably didn't even know what previews are...
That would definetly mean we need to axe them.
That would definetly mean we need to axe them.
Oh boy! What a great idea! Ax them P-reviews. any reviews written by someone with a name starting with P shall be deleted starting now.
Consider showing the median score instead of or in addition to the average.
Change font to one that is better to write "custom" smilies with.
Activate the HTML tag img in the forums, possibly with a maximum size to prevent abuse. Or just make a way to upload pictures to the forum. An upload function for small files in the Development forum would be cool too.

Other things that just came to mind (I am not editing my previous message because it is old enough that noone would really notice):
Fix the "New" label disappearing, which I'm sure you're well aware of.
Allow some sort of "Bring to Newest Post" button that, as implied, brings you to the newest post in a thread. Handy for very lengthy discussions.

Status:
I'm currently working on tweaking the Forum. This includes:
* Removing a couple preferences. Style will always be Message Board and Index will always be Flat.
* Adding preferences that allow you to decide which forums to view from the message board. The support to do this has been available for quite some time, but it has not been easy to access.
* Removing the Stories and Blog forums (and moving those posts to Off Topic).
* Creating the Private Message forum, which will replace the Private Message Center. You will be able to address multiple people, too. I hope to move the old messages into the forum system, but I'm not sure how well that will work (it'll probably end up being one topic per message, which may be a bit annoying).
* Changing the 'New Topic' form to work for both File Discussion topics and Private Messages.

Weren't you gonna merge the source forum with the development forum too?
I stickied this as a reminder to redink. Maybe a little incentive?
Anyway:
* If messages in the new message system can be deleted, include a series of checkboxes or something to delete multiple messages.
* Improve/Fix/Activate the Dink Network Messenger bot.
* Fix the AIM/YIM profile mixup.
* Fix the users page in the admin section.
* Do something about the community fund/store.
* Fix the time bug (It's 4 hours ahead).

? Or adjust your time zone settings?
Possible, but it is silly. My current timezone is GMT +2 (usually +1, but another +1 due to DST). To have the time display correctly (for me) on this board, I have to set it to GMT -2! <strike>That is very unlogical and extremely irrational, not to mention stupid and idiotic</strike>. I mean silly.
ok how about this. demolish all reviews authors have done of their own files but move them into a new feature called author commentary. after the "description" of the file theres a link to the author's commentary which the author can use to review their own file, except it doesnt have a score like a normal review. this way authors can give more in depth and detailed descriptions as well as any thoughts on the file or what they are most proud of and how it did or did not turn out how they planned etc. i think this would be pretty sweet to be able to read authors commentaries on their files without the cheap/point whore/cheesy-ness of giving a score to your own files
Hey, I forgot about that. I would definitely love that feature.
20 points for Josh for a good suggestion - I've never approved of authors reviewing their own files, myself, but I didn't think much of it until just now.
Josh has finally said something worth repeating... time to get him the gold star!!
EDIT: Since when did this topic become sticky? The main reason I can see is that it is DINK NETWORK FLYPAPER. It encourages Dinkers to come with its good sounding information, and then traps them in a wormhole of doom until they die of dehydration. This is what make the ReDink and Tal the two greatest serial killers of all time.

serial killers? snap, krackle, pop, kill, snap, krackle, pop, kill
Verdana/Arial/Sans-Serif!
the forums were way better before. i think it should be changed back
That was my opinion (should be obvious by now.), but I rest my case. After all, it is not BAD, I just don't like it...
And the seach function has been fixed, so everything sees to be working correctly now.
And the seach function has been fixed, so everything sees to be working correctly now.
Mod_rewrite would be nice, for more traffic and more user friendly links
We should have a graveyard section in the contributors page where Dinkers that have died or have been inactive for 18 months are placed separately from the othe contributors.
necrophiliac classifieds?
sounds good. remind me to invite the prophet.
How about a "code mode" for posting code in the forum (you know, that allow indents and stuff). I know several php boards that use it and it certainly would be helpful here.
Or the <pre> html tag.
The DinkVinci code?
does vinegar spill out of the monitor if we get it wrong?
I don't think we should allow HTML in these forums. Only BBCodes. Since HTML might make this forum vulnerable to cookie stealing.
Not all HTML, I agree, but things like <i>, <b>, <a> are already allowed, and I can't see any harm in <pre>.
I guess its ok, to use small tags like that, but phpBB 2.0.16 for example is cookie stealing actually possible.
I want the "desert pillbug" to be selectable.
Also, the "portrait" images could be a little bigger.
Also, the "portrait" images could be a little bigger.
I don't really like cookies so I guess I wouldn't mind if mine were stolen.
You better not steal my cookies!! They are chocolate chip!
I can't eat cookies At least, not those with wheat.. most cookies. Therefore, I donate all cookies I cannot eat to the VonZeppelin "Make Me Fat" Charity.
Make Me Fat Charity
Sorry Tal, I got plenty of fat, and I really don't want any more.
Sorry Tal, I got plenty of fat, and I really don't want any more.
The VonZeppelin "Don't Feed Me Healthy Food" Charity, then?
I hope you all know that a cookie stores information from this site so it will remember when you login so you don't have to login next time you visit DN. The DN cookie stores your password and other usefull information, but the password has been decrypted, but there are lot of encrypters out there which can crack them easily if you're password is weak.
What? Really? You're quite the computer guru here, aren't you?
No I'm not, I just happen to know some very small stuff about making webpages and cracking them. And yes Christiaan, I did notice your lame sarcasm!
You confuse terms. The passwords aren't decrypted, they are encrypted. You de-crypt en-crypted passwords, see? And as far as I know, here at the DN, they aren't encrypted anyway, they are hashed.
Sorry about that, And I don't think the passwords are hashed, look at the password string. It uses characters that hash'es don't use. I belive hash'es have characters from 0-0 and a-j. And the my password has a J and \ in it.
The DN does hash passwords.
What you're talking about is just the hexadecimal version of the hash. And that would be A-F (case insensitive) and 0-9. However, there's no rule that you need to store hashes as hexadecimal strings, it's just more generally "convenient", as it's 100% ASCII compatible, and thus there's a smaller chance of corruption when storing it, especially when using older software.
Ok, then. My bad
hehehehe, hash, heheheheh
Mm.. let's go smoke a hexadecimal.
Would be nice if you implemented some upload system in the PM system, which allowed D-Mod creators to send PM's with atachment, so we don't have to send the D-Mod through mail when beta.testing etc etc
Allowing anyone to privately upload files that only some people can access is far too easy to abuse, so that will not happen.
You can limit of what we can upload, lets say only -Dmod files are allowed?
Hey, I can't download PQ. Can you send it to me via PM?
Then perhaps we can implement a quoting system and code system as Magicman or some other fellow mentioned in some other post in this topic.
It would be awesome if windinkedit could handle 16-bit grapics. Is it impossible?
How is this DN generation 9-related?
It would be good if the author of a message can delete it, incase it is realised that the topic may be unnecessary, as the private message I wrote to redink1 about posting on the board.
Afterwards I found my private message on the board and understood how to do.
- not easy to be a newbe.
I can edit and answer, but I do not find how to remove it.

Well, I think that the white square or border that the portrait has looks bad (or not too adecuate) when one has a dark background and a dark characters (like castle floor and pillbug).
So why not the possibility to choose the color of the border.
So why not the possibility to choose the color of the border.
There should be a column as "Last post by" introduced btw the "Poster" and "Last Post". OR along with the date & time in the 'Last post'.
It would help a lot as we dont remember the no. of posts in the topics.
Also the time zones are incorrect. Indian time zone is +5.5 . I had to select +3 to get it in +.5 range than my time. That means the time is 3 hr. forward.

It should be possible to completely delete(not visible by any means) the posts.
And we should be able to delete our own posts.
And we should be able to delete our own posts.
I agree that users should be able to delete their own posts, though I'm of the opinion that the option shouldn't be available if someone's already replied to them. That just causes confusion... ah, Jamie Jamie Jamie...
We should at least preview the background to our icon when we are changing it, like the picture we can see, why not the background. The border is a good idea too, the more personalization the better I say.
Uhh, we used to be able to preview the background. Maybe it's broken?
I agree with Tal.
I'd go a little further, and say no deletion after 10 or so views, even w/ no replies. But, my way's a bit of a hassle.
burn it burn it all! but seriously i dont have a clue
Maybe a panel to show the smilies if you're posting something?
There was. It was removed for renovation. It has never been seen again.
:'(
:'(
I'd love it if the following could be done
*Make it so that you could search for auther names as well as file names.
*A link to make this your home page (wastes about an a minite to get into this!)
*Mabie a noobie help link?

My time zone's +11 hrs but I had to move it to +8 hrs. You really need to fix the time zones.

Able to change your avater to say, a pic of yourself??

You can only change your avatar if you've made your own d-mod. Then, you can have your avatar as a picture of something from your d-mod.
I'm working on my first D-mod, but still thats kind of unfair to people that do not have the knowlege of how to make one, even with all the help, you need to have a bsic understanding od programming that not everyone has

This thread has stretched long. Any new person wont read all the posts to see if someone has already asked for that feature.
And most of the times we don't get a reply from either redink1, tal or other staff memb., about if they are going to do that in g9 or this thing wont be added.
My suggestion- Redink1 reads through this thread and starts a new g9 wishlist thread mentioning(in 1st post) features that would be and others(asked by people in this thread) that wont be added. And replace this thread by that.
Now somethings I want-->
1) Timeline is off by 3hrs, [p] correct it. And add +51/2hr. option.
2) [p] Add the "last post by" column in Boards page.
3) Let people truly/completely delete their own posts if no one has replied. And [p] remove the partially delete feature.
4) [p] Mention in the Staff page what power each staff member has got. It doesn't seem right if everybody keeps asking Redink1(and he's not around to help) for everything when Tal or SabreT could have done the same. eg If you have 1,2 and 3 problems then any of staff can manage it. But for 7,8 contact A,B or C.
5) Better ranking and [p] show the joining date along with the name and the avatar in the message board. And [p] add a testimonials feature to profile page. which(like review) decides a rating(behavior at TDN) that will be displayed along with his avatar in board. And is considered separate from the ranks thing.
6) A new page which arranges all the dinkers in order of their last login on TDN, and also shows the date. And maybe shows the (total)time they were login here for during the last week.
7) A stickied chat thread which has max. capacity of 50 posts. And old ones get deleted from top as new ones are added at bottom.
8) A half yearly contest of voting the favorite dinker which gets to use the dink avatar and staff like powers for 6 months. And maybe some more things.
9) Adding a screenshot should be mentioned in the contributors page. The review should not be a criteria for deciding rank(peasant etc.).Dmods which have had below 2 rating for 1 year be deleted{yes, get rid of ABCDEFGH.. types} from TDN. People should be registered for at least 6 months b4 they can write a review. NOOOOBs without having played many dmods to get the idea, start giving 9 to everything.
10) [p] Reply what you(every dinker) thinks about the above 9 pts. and suggestion.
[p]=please

I think that pretty much sums up the quality of most of your suggestions. The first few were pretty good, but it went downhill from there... Quickly. 90 degrees.

I'd say more like 110 degrees. You didn't just go downhill, you went down, and lost ground as well.
Yeah. Cause in my opinion, if you have an avatar for about a month, people get used to that avatar being you and, well, if you have your avatar as Dink, people won't recognise you. And staff like powers, I don't think that's such a good idea. A staff member should be someone who actually earns the right of being a staff member.
Just liking someone isn't earning anything! Not everyone liked Tal, SabreTrout, Redink1, SimonK and Joshriot! And they're all staff members!

There are reasons for the 9 pts. If you are not able to make it out yourself. Then it will seem wierd/stupid suggestion.
Like for 8th {remember it is 6months not 1month}
It is to add a new thing to TDN community. Contests should not be limited to making dmods. Most people have been here for more than 2 years so once the avatar changes back to original then people will easily recognize. And the selection of the fav dinker would be something everybody will participate in so there's no pt. in saying that people won't recognize the person. Also, there is limited choices of avatars available so people look at the name even without this thing. And about staff like powers I myself was not sure about it. It could be something else to make this position special.
I cant go on explaining like this about every point. If you dislike it on the 1st read, then ignore it. If you want to comment then mention only the pts. you approve of.{this does not apply to redink1}
Bored? stop here
no? continue
Well now i feel you'll ignore everything.
So here it is, the things i feel you will doubt->
5-> joining date- It would help many time while replying to someone's post. testimonial- we have all other features of a community site, why not this? And if the rating(due to testi) is displayed along with name etc. then the people(most of them) will behave better in the forums. Be nicer to others.
6-> I felt the need[if you don't; OK] of it. If I am waiting for someone's post. Or I want to know if that particular person has left Tdn or not.
7-> Stop people somewhat from chatting and spamming in useful threads. Better alternative to Dink Chat.
9-> Screenshot-its not a negligible contribution. Review- If it decides rank then it becomes a competition to write. New People can't be fair{>9.4 to all dmods} if they have not tried most of the good dmods. The 6 month ban can only prevent it little bit. And remember there are still lot of guys like that one(posted in excess in the board to get higher rank) killdink or dinkkiller or w/e.

1) I hope to fix this eventually.
2) I'm not sure why this would be useful. I see it on other forums, but I do not use it. Say, for example, your arch-enemy in the 'last post by' column. Do you not read it because they posted last, even though you might be missing other replies?
3) No. Deleting posts is one of the few tasks that staff members actually do, mostly because it is so easy.
4) I agree that this is a problem, but I don't think your solution is the best one. I have thought about it before, and have some rudimentary plans set in motion.
5) Ranking users is a very troublesome concept. In the past, we used to have very interesting rankings based on how many files you created and the review scores your files had. But that provoked users to create crap files so their ranking would increase. Then I made it so crap files gave you negative points, and users wanted me to remove files that were decreasing their ranking. Some (most?) people get an ego-trip out of comparing themselves favorably to others, even when it is pointless.
If we added testimonials, I can almost guarantee our issues with users with duplicate accounts would increase, as people would complement themselves.
The joining date is a good idea, but I don't have that information available for existing users.
6) I'm not opposed to the first part (and may implement it after several other changes), but trying to determine how long someone is logged in total over a week is pretty difficult.
7) No, that just wouldn't work with the existing forum system.
8) No. See #5.
9) Screenshots on contributors page: yes. Rank is fixed (non-staff are always peasants). I try not to delete files. Some new people write excellent reviews, and staff members filter out the worst ones.

'last post by' column-
Whenever I reply to a topic and the person who has to reply is also online. Then the new(yellow pic) appears after I have posted in the thread. How do I know that person has replied. I find it troublesome to remember the no. of posts or the time when I posted. There are many more reasons, and I have felt the need so many times. I can't recall it right now.
About the Joining date- For current users we can assume it as the date of 1st post. Most users login when they have to ask something, and they are approx. same for all.
12) {NEW}Whenever someone edits his post a message appears at the end of the post in gray- Edited at so-and-so date. AS many times as the person edited the post. What say?
13) A small box which is attached to the message writing box. It has the codes for all the smiley's, link, Bold, strikethrough etc.
Everything else is OK.

I wouldn't like 12, as I usually edit my posts two or three time right after I post them, to fix obvious errors.
Also, it's usually easy to see what, if any, new posts have shown up in a thread you just posted in. What I do is I open up all threads in new tabs when I first show up, and again, after I finish posting, to see if anything more was put in.

Yeah that's what I do to.
That seems tedious.
A "last post by" column would be simpler.
I suggest that you ressurect the complaints box.
Sometimes I find tiny errors on the site, but am too lazy to e-mail the staff.
The complaint box would ensure that staff members realize and fix errors more quickly.
Users these days won't confuse it with a search box, which is on the left.

Problem was, the staff members weren't using the complaint box either. It was moreso being spamed to the nines.

how about a "log in" button?
You can do that in the account page, can't you?
yeah, but that's sort of hidden.
btw redink, any reason not to convert the entire messageboard to UBB or invision or whatever, besides the pride of having a unique, self made sw?

First of all, the security risk is WAY lower with a self made forum, if no one has the source, the harder it is to find vulnerabilities . As far as I know is phpBB and Invision flooded with security bugs. Also, this board is way better than any of them
Why would you? This forum system is fine, has everything it needs, is a lot more customizable by the creator and has a very low spambot and script risk.
Speaking of which, a [code] tag would be appreciated. Perhaps with some DinkC syntax highlighting.

I've got a request. It's about the 'new' pic that appears next to all new messages. I would like a way of removinig it for just one message. And have it stay there forever until you've either removed it, or read the message. And it stays there after you posted. It gets kinda confusing. I'd like it not to be there after you post.
It used to be like that, but was changed (Well, obviously). I liked it better the way it was, too.
Actually, how about this:
Mark all topics with unread posts as NEW, ALWAYS, until you view them or press the "mark all as read" link/button. If the user hasn't been logged in for an hour when the user logs in next time, the topics are automatically marked as read.
EDIT: new suggestions.
To save on bandwidth, you could make the topics that are not marked read be cached for a few days whenever a person opens the topic.
The nested view stuff is nice, but find a way to not have all big replies so cropped. This can be done with a bit less indentation, maybe a "more replies follow to this post... Click here" thing. Or making the topics move sideways a bit, without having the 100% page width limit. Anyway, it's annoying.
Code tags?

That could get kinda confusing. I don't really like that.

But what about when youpost something. Then there's still a 'new' thing next to it and it gets kinda confusing.

Not because i am satisfied of the TDN current layout. I am not.
But because after that ReDink1 will leave TDN.

I nice litle feature would be if we can change which page to go to on the bottom of the forum, instead of it just saying "Next page" Why not add numbers? Yes, I do realize that it will be ALOT of numbers, but if we truncate them like this:
Page:1,2,3,4,5.......,665,666,667,668,669,700.
Page:1,2,3,4,5.......,665,666,667,668,669,700.
Cheers! Almost no-one knows that much then redink1! (WHISPER let's worship him so much he won't leave)!
First of all, anyone notice that the subject keeps changing? This happens in a lot of topics. And I mean a lot. When I post sometimes, then I go review my post, i see I changed the subject when I didn't! It gets so annoying! Is it just me, or is it happening to everyone?
And Glennglenn, when you have numbers like that, it takes a while to get to the pages in the middle of it all. I think the next page thing is good enough. It's not that often that you actually do have to go further than one page.

The subject does not change itself. You have the same subject as of the post you reply to.
So you go up and you will find exactly where(which post) the subject was changed.
And that person did do it by editing it while writing the post. So it does not happen by itself.
This happens in a lot of topics.
Check in all those topics the same way and you will understand who changed the subject(and why).
What I said is obvious for most of you. But well, dd95

Does anybody else also feels that this thread is too long to be useful?
Anyways back to the topic-
that thing Glenn mentioned is not needed.
You just have to click on next page once and then-
on that page you can edit the url to reach at any of the page you want to, directly.

Harshit, I do not change the topic and when I review some of my posts I see they have been changed. And this does happen in a lot of topics. And most of them, I don't think are on purpose. I know most of mine aren't!
And please try to keep the subject as G9 Wishlist.

To the guy that suggested the return of the complaint box and implied that it wouldn't be confused with the search box, which was in fact present at least a short while before the complaint box was removed: Your suggestion will hopefully not be considered. Spam, spam, spam, spam, search queries, spam.
DD95: The ALL CAPS rule is generally forgiven if the post in question is brief, and the rules in general are cut some slack, for the most part. If, say, my paragraph above were ALL CAPS, there would probably be more cause for a warning or deletion.
Now then, a suggestion of my own: it'd be sorta neat if clicking the "new!" button would take the user to the first unread post. This has saved me a great deal of time wading through old junk on another board I frequent.

I understand about the ALL CAPS thing. And what does nested view actually do? I've always wondered? I tried it and I didn't notice any significant difference.
Um... try it again? It should be incredibly obvious.
In nested view, replies to a post are shifted to the right slightly, and replies to those replies are shifted just a little more, and so on and so forth. Makes it easier to see who's replying to who.

Suggestion 1: Automatically close any thread that anyone posts in, since 90% of the posts on this forum seem to be people spamming or complaining about spam. You can manually reopen the threads that aren't being spam-complaint-spammed, that'd be easier than closing all the threads that need closing.
Suggestion 2: Admit that this game is finally dead. Just add a sticky in all caps: "GO AWAY. IT'S OVER."

Suggestion 4: Take a look at Suggestion 3.
I don't agree with Suggestion 1 or 2. The game is not dead. It's actually pretty popular in my opinion. We've got people here from all over the world! There's people from Australia, America, India, Mexico and many more! (At least I think there was someone from Mexico.)
Oh, and when are you actually going to go through with all the stuff you think is good redink1? And have a look at the first reply by joshriot. I think a favourite files list would be nice. And you should have it in your profile so others can have a look at it and if they see something that sounds good they can check it out.

Cool. Do you mean if you said f**k then it comes up as banana? And if you say s**t then it comes up banana, and if you say b***h then it comes up banana? That would be cool! And funny!
I have another suggestion.Disallow Guest's to make a new topic or post for less spam and more users. So that spammer who said that he's a Spammer Kill will be OWN3D!When he'l be registered!>-]
I agree with DD95. That banana thingy would be cool!
Rather disturbing...
I think you should get logged out after no activity after, say, 20mins rather than finding you are still logged in after going on holiday for 3 weeks and everyone thinking you are some psycho-maniac that sits at the computer staring at the DN waiting for someone to post all night long (nothing wrong with that but just so we can discern with the people who don't do that and the people who do).
What? Does that mean if you don't log off, then your name still appears on the Lurkers: thing at the top? But I never log off? Should I?
No, you're only listed as lurker when you're really lurking. Just being logged in isn't enough to be listed.
So you mean your not listed as lurking if you aren't doing anything but are still logged in but you are when you are looking at TDN?
Your a lurker if you've sent a page query of sorts in the past 5 minutes or so.
I've found, that if you're on, you're lurker. I never log off you see, I just quite Firefox, so, when I come back to the Dink Network, it says my name up in the Lurkers section. So, if you're on, but haven't viewed any topics or anything yet, you're still a lurker. Simply, if you're on, you're a lurker.

That's because when you return, then you agin appear at the lurker list.
eg. If I am logged on and am reading a long thread then after a fixed time my name is removed from the lurkers. It comes back when I click on a link(i.e. when my browser sends&receives info from TDN) to read another thread. The user(eg DD95 & Hades) can know about this himself only if he has two diff. connections(IP) running b4 him.
It is common that we see some people disappear and reappear again and again. Did you think they keep going log off and log on for no reason?

Yay!
Take me for example. I'll open up all the threads in new tabs, it'll take me 10-15 min to read them, I am seen to have stopped lurking. I reply to one, I lurk yet again.
Actually, you DO get logged out after a while. Once you return/refresh the page, it'll log you back in though.
I have a suggestion/wish. What about quotes. Instead of using "blah blah" how about quotes where it hsa what the person said inside a little box with above that "so-and-so wrote"?
Maybe the ability to insert images into posts other than just post links to them? I mean, so you can put something like [img]photobucket.com/the-plumber/...[/img] and the image appears in your post?

Quotes have been suggested oh so much, and never implemented. I think there was a reason for having no image tags, too, but you'll have to ask a mod more about that.
We have no image tags because we don't want image signatures, and we don't want to bother policing images as well. There's also the matter that then there would have to be size requirements, etc, etc. It's a hassle, and linking to images works just as well.
In my opinion, images would break what visible elegance there is on the board.

Well... the lack of needing a quotes can be fixed by using nested view. Some of us with just use italics on our own, if we feel like it.
And as far as images go, last I heard, redink1 thinks they would be too easily abused. Links to images are good enough, really.

Maybe we could work out something where an elite few, those of us who wouldn't post obnoxious signatures showing off our (un)leet Photoshop skillz or images of porn, would earn the privilege to post images...
But, probably not, and I can almost guarantee that there will never be any ability to embed images.

One of the best things about the DN compared to other forums is it isn't filled with crappy Photoshop sigs and the like.
Linking is good enough for me.
Linking is good enough for me.
Well, I don't really care all that much. I didn't suggest signatures because I think they're just plain annoying. You gotta scroll more, and it just wastes more of your download. At least with links you get a choice. The link may contain porn or a virus etc.
i was wonderin if we could bring back the blog thing on the site again
ok, i'm new here, so i don't know if g9 is already implemented or not, but maybe we could have rankings? but just names, not like any extra privelages, just in case they abuse them. and if they abuse there title they could get it removed and be reset to a peasant
and why can't you have an automatic file-upload script? i have neen waiting for a week and i know that somebody else has been waiting for months and it still isn't uploaded. many sites allow instantaneous uploads, i don't see why we have to wait

EVeryone's been asking for a ranking system. But it's totally useless, you'll only get people bragging LOK GYSE I'M AN ALMOST-KING LOL.

but if they boast they should get demoted to the previous rank, so that fixes that
Maybe depending on the sort of files the person releases and how good they are, the person could get a rank like the ones dmods get etc...
I.E.
Released 5 files:
1.5, 4.8, 9.3, 7.5, 5.4,
Average out the ranks and you get 6.4(2).
The highest ranking authors could be put on a separate page with links to them to make brilliant dmods and other items by the same author easier to find.

if they boast or abuse privelages, then every time they do that 0.0 is added to the average, reducing it a bit
Heh, something like this was tried years ago and it lead to even more point-whoring than the old poster-ranking system.
Just deal with the fact that you're not going to get your precious ranks here.

Poor FB5
but-if they do that they get demoted
oh well...

I think there should be a name-change option on the profile page. I've been bugging redink1 for awhile about it but he doesn't want to change it for me. I don't see why though. Maybe someone could explain...?
I'll give at least one good reason:
Jamie
Jamie
Because there's only one person who's bugging him, which is not a big enough userbase to actually implement it?
This could be pretty useful, though confusing if you change your avatar at the same time ("who is that?"). I've seen some sites use it, but I'm not sure it's very wise to implement this on TDN...

on my site i can allow username changes but i rather not, since that raises issues. but on chaotic dink's <a href="http://chaoticdink.awesomewebspace.com/forum>forum</a> i can personally change it (i think) so come and join the latest dink community!

Who the heck is Jamie!?

Well, maybe when your name changes, for a few weeks under your avatar you could have in small print something like "Formerly known as DinkDude95". I know on other forums when you get a name change you can put it in your sig. But sigs are just annoying and waste download.

well... on chaotic dink (http://chaoticdink.awesomewebspace.com) i have enabled signatures so you can do that. i don't believe that they waste space, unless they are more than half the length of the post. but i can't really control that. anyway, name changing on CHD (http:chaoticdink.awesomewebspace.com) has been disabled, so that avoids confusiong.
and i wonder why redink1 hardly ever posts?

Sigs are just annoying, I think. People begin to brag about how they created their awesome sig in Photoshop or something. It gets really annoying.
then you should block image tags
Images are what sigs are all about. You put images in them. But we don't have them here. And that's cool. Now get over it!
Who even put images in their signatures? I almost never do, there's always some text in them (like useful links, links related to me, a funny or weird quote).
There's no need to have them, though. Some people like going overboard with them, like put huge images in them.

I wouldn't mind signatures so much. I'd prefer them to be text-only, but I'll run with whatever floats Dan's boat.
I would definitely hope that an option to disable signatures would be offered, though.
Don't count on this feature ever coming.

I suggest we should have a reputation system. I've seen many other forums with it. It has nothing to do with how much you releasing / posting, just the quality of it. It won't add reputation immediately to the user; a staff member must accept it first. I think it's the best solution to get rid of spammers and such, because, who would like to have a bad reputation? To low maybe should result in ways like posting cap for that person (limited posting each day 'til the reputation is back to the normal).
What do you think?
What do you think?
Seems like it would cause undue extra work on the staff to me.
Yeah, I think this would be filed under things that Dan might possibly do if he was terminally bored with everything else.
"Who the heck is Jamie!?"
If you weren't around, it doesn't matter. Suffice to say, it's a good reason.
EDIT: How about a small star/icon under the avatar for those authors who have released a file that has won Download of the Year, or one of the contests? It's not a particularly useful thing to implement... but I think it would be better than a reputation system.
As I make it, those included would be Redink (x3), Simonk (x2), Paul Pliska, Simeon, Metatarasal and... myself.
Or perhaps something related to those who have released an Epic rated 9 or over? I don't know - Just spewing ideas out. Feel free to kick them into touch.

I've heard something about some guy who got his name changed and something else happened and blah blah. Was that it?
How about you and friends get a bunch of "T-shirts" printed up???!!
HECK, I'd buy at least 1(probably 3)!

Offense intended man: Posting such a request in this thread is retarded! This thread is for suggestions/wishes for the G9!
You said retarded! I will now proceed to act offended.
Um, yeah.
lance has been looking around for these shirts everywhere, but he didn't create a new topic about it, which is probably just the best and most simple thing to do.

then maybe we should just have a forum with all the off topic posts that arn't worth starting a new topic about?
Why? They aren't worth starting a new topic about...
SINCE THIS IS NO LONGER STICKIED, WE MUST ACHIEVE 250 POSTS.
Yes, we must.
Yes, we must.
well, if we keep spamming it, it will become huge with a lot more than 250 posts. or maybe we could try to reach -1 posts. of course, that is possible, if you are a computer.
It'll take ages if it's a 64-bit integer, though.
exactly. so don't waste your lives trying to reach hypothetical negative numbers that don't exist, it will take years of continuous spamming, which will (hopefully) get you banned
You're the one to talk..?
