The Bloop the Fish D-Mod Contest began on April 1st, and the deadline was just hours ago. Three entries have been submitted.

Here they are, in order of submission, which is also alphabetical order:

First, Skull has submitted 2001: A Bloop Oddyssey on the very day the contest was announced. It is "An Arcade-style D-Mod starring everybody's favourite fish, Bloop!"

Next, Bluedy submitted Another Fish Named Bloop just a week after the contest was announced, and described it as "My very first, noobly made dmod."

And finally, I submitted Bloop's Purpoise on the last day contest entries were allowed. I describe it as "Bloop discovers why he is a fish."

Best of luck to everyone!

For more details about the voting, please see the comments.

Voting Rules

Everyone can vote, as long as your account was created before April 1st 2017.

Voting rules:

1) Play (or, at least, try to play) each entry.

2) Rank the entries, where 1 is the best, 2 is second best, and 3 is third best.

3) Submit your vote by posting a reply to this message on the forum, with the D-Mods in a ranked order.

4) All votes must be received no later than Friday, June 16th, 2017 (UTC-11, the best UTC).

Because I have a potential conflict of interest, as I have both organized the contest and submitted an entry, I just want to make it clear that I double-pinky-swear that I will bear no grudge against anyone for anything related to the voting process, and there will be zero retaliation. This is a silly contest (that's half an April Fool's Day joke), so let's just have fun.

If you have any questions, please post below.

Its also worth noting that I had written out a whole script in a notebook for my dmod, but I just scratched the whole idea and so, basically, I made up a new story as I went. So, if until now, the dmod seemed weird and crappily made, now you know why.

At first, I wasn't sure if the contest was a joke or not, but after I saw it has a deadline and redink telling it was legit, I concluded it was.

@Bluedy
Yes, it's kind of weird. And being noticeably less polished compared to the others, it's quite telling it's your first attempt. It's better than many first attempts, though.

I quite enjoyed Another Fish Named Bloop; I thought it was funny and demented (I laughed out loud a couple times), and I liked how it integrated standard Dink graphics into Bloop's world (like the bed). Great job!

Yeah, same. Right when the status bar is supposed to appear (I think), it crashes. Both on DFArc2 and FreeDink.

Played a few levels of your D-Mod, Skull. Good stuff! I might continue later for the other levels.

Thanks. There's more variety in the later levels. But it also gets pretty tough.

Maybe it's just me who sucks, but Skull... did you test your D-Mod from start to finish?

Yeah. Everything works fine from start to finish on my end. There are a couple of issues I am aware of (and maybe some I'm not), cause I rushed the whole thing out as a joke for April Fools' Day, due to not realising this was an actual contest. Had I known it was, I'd have spent some extra time polishing out minor issues, would've probably made the D-Mod longer, and spent some time detailing the map a bit better and picking MIDIs more carefully. I might still do that at some point. But there definitely shouldn't be anything game breaking. If you're referring to difficulty, then yes, it does get pretty difficult around level 5, cause it's a short D-Mod, and I wanted to make it feel like a classic arcade game in its difficulty, and really "stress you out in a good way".

I was gonna play both Bluedy and Redink's D-Mods through before commenting anything on them, but since I can't get Redink's to work, I might as well just give my opinion on Bluedy's D-Mod right now and save the other for later.

All in all, I thought Another Fish Named Bloop wasn't actually a bad first D-Mod at all. It was longer and way more polished than I expected. It was really funny and entertaining (and oddly distressing at points also), and it gave me a bit of an old-school D-Mod feel with its wit, clever ideas and humour. That feeling was probably, actually, helped by the fact that it was your first D-Mod. The somewhat "sloppy" work gives it a feeling of early D-Mods. By the way, I don't think there's ever been another D-Mod that actually shows parts of and gives an unique twist to another already-existing D-Mod like this one does, so props on that. I, too, liked the fact that you also used original Dink graphics along with the Bloop ones. It was a good idea, though some screens perhaps didn't make that much sense. But they don't really need to. It's the type of D-Mod that doesn't really need to make sense. Reminds me of The Quest for Cheese, in that regard.

All that being said, there were some issues. First off, there was a save file left in the D-Mod when I first started. You could talk to the dead "hallucination" on your bed multiple times (didn't break the game but clearly wasn't meant to be). I was also able to pass through the rock you were supposed to bomb. Also some minor nitpicks: Some of the pauses between the dialogues were a bit too long, and the characters would always say an "extra line" at the end of a conversation that wasn't supposed to happen unless you talked to them again. Also, some characters/objects were really hard to talk to/examine cause of their (or maybe Bloop's) depth dot. You need to be in the perfect spot. Other than that, really solid work for a first D-Mod. Have a cat as a reward: . (I can't believe we have a cat but still not a beheaded duck smiley)

Ugh.

It looks like dink.exe crashes when it tries to display the new status bar graphics; I'm not sure why. Seems related to the new number sequences to 'hide' defense, magic, experience, gold, etc.

Please use freedink.exe, or replace these lines in dink.ini:

load_sequence_now graphics\inter\n- 181 LEFTALIGN
load_sequence_now graphics\inter\numbers\nr- 182 LEFTALIGN
load_sequence_now graphics\inter\n- 183 LEFTALIGN
load_sequence_now graphics\inter\n- 184 LEFTALIGN
load_sequence_now graphics\inter\n- 185 LEFTALIGN

With the original sequences:

load_sequence_now graphics\inter\numbers\ns- 181 LEFTALIGN
load_sequence_now graphics\inter\numbers\nr- 182 LEFTALIGN
load_sequence_now graphics\inter\numbers\nb- 183 LEFTALIGN

With those dink.ini changes, I did confirm that it is possible to complete Bloop's Purpoise (both endings) with standard Dink v1.08, with a few issues:

1) The text for the fifth pearl doesn't appear.

2) The new font colors don't work sometimes?

3) When picking up a pearl, the midi is supposed to stop, but it actually restarts.

4) fade_down doesn't work, and any text displayed during a fade_down isn't displayed. I could have sworn that fade_down worked in Dink v1.08 before; did that break with Windows 7 or Windows 10?

I use Windows 7 and never had a problem with fade_down in any Dink version, except randomly with Dink HD in certain D-Mods. Only problem v1.08 ever had with fade_down is that the screen doesn't go completely black.

You can save at the shop.

I also just played through the game and noticed a bug with the shop, where saving in certain slots will activate some of the other choices in the menu. Not sure how that happened, but oh well, stupid mistakes like that happen when you rush-script while super tired. I'll definitely fix it in a future update at some point, but for now just save in one of the bottom save slots if you wanna avoid getting a cheaty amount of boosts.

Well, Skull, thanks for the in-depth review. Maybe Ill fix these issues in the future. The dialogue speed has always been a problem for me, and I could never find the perfect speed and placement of the dialogue. As for the rock, I've had multiple issues with it, and no matter hour big or small the hard box was, you could still pass through the rock. So I just gave up on it. However, I tested it one last time, and that time, Bloop couldnt pass through the rock. So that seems weird. If you're referring to the fact that Bloop goes behind the rock for a little bit before stopping, then yes, Im aware of that issue. But still, better than passing through the whole rock and on to the next screen, right? (I hope thats the issue) And for the save file, well, it could be multiple reasons. If you discovered that file after playing for a little bit, then thats an autosave file. The game autosaves without warning. But there also is the possibility of there being a save by me. However, when I packaged the game, my last save was at the end of the game. So thats definitely an autosave. So dont worry
All in all, thanks again for the review
Maybe one day Ill sit down and solve all these issues....Maybe......I dunno....Im a pretty lazy person

For some reason I can't get past level 12. It doesn't report success or failure, it just keeps looping and no more worms fall. And a bug report: behind the octopus at the far left of the screen it's possible to get above the water.
@redink1
The only bug I noticed when I played was that killing the shark too close to the rocks, it's possible that you won't be able to get the pearl.
@Bluedy
Uhm... I was supposed to use a bomb on the rock? So that's what the snake is for! Good thing I was a thin fish. Okay, maybe I got a little help from that lack of hardness - juuust a little.
Anyway, as Skull mentioned, the depth dots are a problem. And some objects that I think should be in the background are in the foreground instead.

That's curious. I played it through again with the version on my computer and didn't run into any issues. I then downloaded the uploaded version off of TDN and immediately ran into this problem. Looks like something went wrong with the packaging, perhaps (wouldn't be the first time. When I first uploaded HH1 half the map disappeared in the packaging). I couldn't find any proper reason for this happening, but when I simply copied the same script from the version on my computer, into the version off of TDN, it started working perfectly again. I've uploaded an updated version that's currently pending. It should be working now, unless something went wrong again. I also took the time to fix the bug with the shopkeeper's save menu while at it.

So, please consider this a Submission of my vote because I am posting a reply to your leading "New D-Mods: Bloop the Fish Contest Entries" message on the part of the DN forum, with the D-Mods in a ranked order.

#1 Bloop's Purpoise Dan Walma
This was quite a real quest, with excellent game play and a series of goals, etc. It had a great story depth and it was the most entertaining of the 3. I must declare it the best game of the 3, though I must admit I am not sure of how to end or win the game once Martridge casts his looping magic spell.

#2 Another Fish Named Bloop; Bluedy
This was an interesting idea, with a somewhat goofy and elaborate "fish story" and quest activity at the core of the "game". I thought that the story was great fun. In general, it made a good use of some standard Dink graphics, plus the usual lighthearted Bloop graphics and mapping. This was a VERY close 2nd place.

#3 2001: A Bloop Oddyssey; Skull
This was a delightfully cheerful, if somewhat tedious arcade game. Alas arcade games are not really my cup of tea. I want a story to unfold. I quit at the 2nd level. However, I feel I must point out that as an arcade game, the game play within it was generally entertaining, if a bit simple.

That's all folks!

3) When picking up a pearl, the midi is supposed to stop, but it actually restarts.

If you have loop_midi() somewhere to keep the music from stopping when it ends, forcing midi's to stop through scripts triggers it.

It's actually a reference to Tim's D-Mod "2001: A Dink Oddyssey". I was proofreading through the COTPATD book at the time, and couldn't think of any clever name for the D-Mod, so I just decided to throw a fun reference in there. I dunno what in the sound could be causing a crash. There's nothing unusual about the MIDI files nor the scripting with sound/music, and you seem to be the only person this is happening to. So it seems to be a problem on your end.

Also, I just realised I might be the only person in TDN's history who entered a contest without knowing they did.

i'll do this to look cool and special and less lame by a small bit.

1: Bloop's Purpoise. i mean obviously. redink1's got some kind of impossible understanding of dinkC. probably some forgotten secrets learned in another dimension yet those same rules apply to our dimension due to the paradoxal energies attached to redink1's hands. so, while redink1 can apply weird shit to dmods, we can't unless we undergo the same dimensional transference he did. and even then, it's probably tough to survive such a way of travelling.

2:Another Fish Names Bloop. i guess. so it was kinda annoying figuring out what to do and the barrel dood took hours to move bloop over between the ponds. but there was a creepy vibe to it that disrupted my chakras, so i had to perform a little bit of a spiritual cleansing to avoid being confronted by my own delusion-visage and being thrust into an unwinnable battle of darkness.

3: 2001: A Bloop Odyssey. man, fix this game. the sheer speed and ghost like powers of the worms makes it more about randomness and luck than skill. at first the problem is how slow you are and kinda having to stay near the bubble. then the problem is too many worms spawning in walls and being impossible to chomp. then, spikey dudes blocking you from picking them up too. i had to file a complaint to the BBB and now skull's company is in dire straits. soon, i will scoop up the remains of the company and design 2002: A Bloop Odyssey. i will then sell off the company for billions in order to fund my interdimensional project to gain the same powers redink1 has.

Okay, before I forget about this, here are my ratings:
1. Bloop's Purpoise
Dan has a long-time experience with developing D-Mods, and it shows. He created new graphics, notably for the fishes. It also has an interesting boss battle. It starts out with a typical plot: the bad guy does something evil, it's up to the hero to repair the damage, gain power, than defeat the villain. But after that, the plot takes a twist... It's a nice mix of old D-Mod formula and new ideas.
2. Another Fish Named Bloop
This D-Mod uses the setting of A Fish Named Bloop, created by iplaydink. (As a note, all of the contest entries use graphics from iplaydink's D-Mod.) For this entry, it's a good idea to play the mentoined D-Mod beforehand, because the story will make way more sense. After Bloop defeats the antagonist of the previous D-Mod, he starts having mental issues. His psychologist advises him to do an objective that will help him distract from that state. But nothing is ever simple, right? The D-mod is flawed in some ways, like the lack of dots at the end of sentances or being behind object that look floating due to Bloop's size. But for it's storyline and creative solutions, I don't regret playing it.
3. 2001: A Bloop Oddyssey
An arcade style game. It's also based on the setting of iplaydink's D-Mod. It certainly has more polish than Bluedy's D-Mod, but I found it really boring. So, it gets the last place, because it was the least interesting for me.

1: Another Fish Named Bloop
2: 2001: A Bloop Oddyssey

Hi.

I would like to submit my votes.

1. 2001: A Bloop Oddyssey. It's tough, but I kind of liked how it is a quality mod, simple and released the same day it was announced.

2. Bloop's Purpoise. Purely redink1's quality. In scripting, humor, clever and funny conversations, not very buggy, good use of music and graphics, and the implementation of fresh and creative ideas in a dink mod, connecting a silly story with the Dink Smallwood universe overall just give it a touch. Not much more that I can say.

3. Another Fish Named Bloop. I liked the humor used here. The little story told here amused me, specially some parts, like the "long, perilous journey", heh. I also liked the use of auto-save to make the story more linear and, at the same time, interactive.
There were a few minor glitches that I didn't like, for example, the escape key to show the menu to close the program doesn't show anything at all, I had to do Alt-Tab then force the exit of the application when I needed, unless I finished the whole game in one session; when finishing a conversation with a NPC, the first say_stop() of the next one shows up, but probably it was designed like that.

dinkmega has a natural connection to Bloop's Purpoise. His tagline gives it away.

But really, we're all winners, because we all got a few new fun D-Mods to play, and everyone who voted will get a fancy new badge in a few minutes.

Thanks to everyone who submitted D-Mods, and to everyone who voted!

(Note: Toof's vote was not counted because they were not signed in; it would not have affected the result though).

2nd generation. No easy way to be free.
And let's not forget to thank our DN master administrator, Mr. redink1 for making it all possible and keeping the fun of Dink alive for us!

Thanks!

BTW, do you intend to update the score column on the

web page for these based on the contest scores or shall we other denizens of the DN do that in the usual manner?

Thanks for proposing the contest. It was nice to see one more being done, and also to get to play some dmods again.
