Yeah, PoTC's pretty good(the first one, mind you). But...I'm not sure what my favourite game would be. Basically, I wouldn't know because my computer currently isn't working that well with the graphics of games.
I'm talking about the POTC made by Bethseda Softworks or whatever. Is that what you think I mean?
"Basically, I wouldn't know because my computer currently isn't working that well with the graphics of games. "
My graphics card isn't that good either. I've still got an ATI Radeon 7000 Series 64mb. But most games still work.

RISK The board game. To be played with real people all in the same room. It doesn't get any better than that.
We can choose from board games, too? I just love Pictionary, but nobody will play with me The Finnish version also includes a category called "Proverbs", and as there are some ~200 cards, you can imagine how well-known most of the proverbs on them are.
Pictionary is great fun. I played it a lot before with my friends and won almost every time

Yeah, despite the game having practically nothing to do with the movie, since it was originally supposed to be Sea Dogs 2, the first PoTC was pretty good. Until I managed to get Frigates, I really loved using the Xebec XT. Of course, at the end of the game, my armada was absurdly powerful. I had two Battleships, a Man o'War, a Lineship, and a large capable crew of experienced officers, outfitted with the best weapons I could find.
If we are gonna talk about board games, I'm saying Go. Sure, I'm not all that great at it, but longer games can get quite interesting.
Go? I've never heard of it...
Monopoly is really the only board game I ever play because I can't afford any of the others. $70, Pfft!
Monopoly is really the only board game I ever play because I can't afford any of the others. $70, Pfft!
Consider yourselves lucky, since monopoply kind of sucks. If the properties get distributed somewhat evenly among players, the game will take days until one by one they give up and the player who can stand the torment longest wins, only to feel cheated for wasting several days of his life.
Let's see...
RPG is the big genre I love, of which the Final Fantasy and the Mana series have entertained me the most. Actually, I liked almost any older Square/Enix/Square-Enix.
Then there are platformers. I'm pretty much a fan of Commander Keen ("wutz comander keen?" "Google it."), and have tried making a Keen fangame for a while now. Keen has some nice gameplay.
EDIT: basically, I find any game enjoyable, even crappy ones. Except FPS shooters and the like (older games like Duke Nukem 3D are very much an exception though).

I used to have CK. However, Dad deleted it when he was cleaning up the computer.
Hell, 3Drealms.com has almost ALL of its classics for download. Including Commander Keen. So it isn't difficult to get at all, not on the net.

My favorite genre is RPG. If we're talking about one's FAVORITE game then the answer is extremely simple: Xenosaga. (1-3)
Back in the days Commander Keen was indeed a great way to spend your spare time, but really, no use clinging to the past. There have been many good platform games (even 3D) that far surpass it . Nostalgia is a nice thing, but don't let it blind you Same counts for Doom and Duke Nukem 3D. A good example of a similar FPS that's not old yet is Prey.
If you're a cheap hag but want an awesome RPG you can get The Way. It's a free game for RPGMaker 2000, but definitely better than most other games on the market today (if you can get over the 2D aspect of it).

However, Commander Keen has this unique gameplay no other games have, or even have tried. Some games just don't get old quickly.

Yeah, hiding spots with power ups and stuff in them, unique enemies and a laser pistol.

I'm so sick and tired of that comment... Most people that say it haven't even played it. And also, about 99% of the RPGs that I've played (that's a LOT) don't have cutscenes. I like to call them talk scenes instead, where for 5 minutes 3 characters stand absolutely STILL and talk. Now that's what I call boring. There's probably not a single talk scene in Xenosaga. If that's what people mean when they say it's a good movie, then HELL YES, give me more of them.

I don't know any other game that has the pogo and falling-through-platform techniques though.
Kyle: you seem to be playing the wrong RPGs if all they do is stand around and talk.

I think what Kyle is getting at is that they don't stand around and talk, DaVince.
Having never played Xenosaga, I couldn't comment.

Have you played Advent Children? That sounds like an RPG you might like, too.
Haha... clever, Striker.
No need to be so defensive, Kyle. I don't think anyone's seriously panning Xenosaga, but it is pretty heavy on cutscenes. I haven't played it, but I've watched it. If memory serves me correctly, doesn't it offer save points in the middle of some of its cutscenes? That, I find excessive. I love cutscenes, but after about 5 minutes I would like to return to the game, thank you.

I have tried to play Xenosaga, and a little over an hour in, I wouldn't use the term 'pretty good movie' to describe it... more like a 'pretty bad movie'. A poorly directed, poorly acted, and poorly explained movie.
I think I would prefer these 'talk scenes' you speak of, as usually you (the player) has to trigger them, and they don't go on forever.
I think I would prefer these 'talk scenes' you speak of, as usually you (the player) has to trigger them, and they don't go on forever.
Let's see... Xenosaga is a 40+ hour game. It has exactly 7 hours and 49 minutes of cutscene (I have the recorded ones right here on my disk). That means there is still over 32 hours of gameplay in there. Now, I don't know if you play many other games, but games that last 30+ hours inluding cutscenes have become very rare. But let's go one step further. I'm sure many of you have played and like Kingdom Hearts 2. That game has over 8 hours of cutscenes and only about 25 hours of gameplay. Yet, people don't complain and you know why? It's got this pretty Square Enix title pasted all over the box and the gameplay is action oriented giving the impression that it's got more gameplay, whereas an RPG feels slower by default (exploring towns and such).
At Striker: I didn't really like Advent Children. It's the exact opposite of what I like in a movie... All action and no story isn't my cup of tea. It was a movie to satisfy the fanboys and it failed even at that. I liked The Spirits Within a LOT more (which incidentally got bad reviews because of a complex story LOL).
At Tal: It presents the player with a savepoint during cutscene 3 times in the game if memory servers correctly. All are transition cutscenes to move along travel through space or to switch from character viewpoint.
At redink1:
Everyone has their opinion and because you played it (unlike many others) you have a right to comment on it. But, the series of statements you make seem to go against everything everyone thinks about the cutscenes. Yes, even the haters praise it for them. Bad acting? It has a cast of top voice actors, all of who have starred in about a billion other games. Poorly explained? The first hour of Xenosaga lays the foundation for a 120+ hour storyline (it's a saga of 3 games). I'm sure you agree not everything should be divulged in it's first hour. I can't argue against you about poorly directed because that's very subjective I guess... But again, even the haters love the directing... Maybe you got into the game with prejudices? It may start out a bit slow (although at the end of your hour you should have gotten into the action part) but once it starts up it never lets up again.
If you've played an hour you probably reached this cutscene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6QoUu6Y-oM
Let's play a game and find us some other game's ingame cutscenes that are equally as good. No opening or ending (in which case I'll use Xenosaga's opening and ending as well and win by default, hehe). By the way, this is just a random one I picked up on Youtube. I could pick ANY cutscene and it would be just as good...
I probably sound super defensive... well, I am. Because I've taken in some truly unfounded dumb shoot about this game in the past. People got into the whole "it plays like a movie" thing because it was advertised as such and later exaggerated on by reviewers. But don't let my defensive attitude affect you... I'm not attacking anyone, I don't hate anyone, but I do regret that some of the readers on this board may have thought about getting this game or renting it and now changed their minds because of some superficial comments. And that would truly be a shame.

I think you are confusing complex with absurd and convoluted. There is a distinct difference.

I've not played either Kingdom Hearts II or Xenosaga, though I've read reviews for both and I sincerely doubt that KHII has any 50-minute cutscenes. Not being a big fan of JRPGs myself, I cannot fathom wanting to sit through a cutscene that long unless the story is simply the most riveting piece ever written. That's not to say I wouldn't give Xenosaga a chance though... I'm just teasing it based on the general consensus. I don't have any general ill will towards the game, having not played it at all. Stop being so dang defensive. It's a game, nobody really cares... except you.
I think you are confusing complex with absurd and convoluted. There is a distinct difference.
Absurd? Well, last time I checked it was set in a fantasy realm. And convoluted? I guess you're a fan of "I figured out the plot in 5 minutes" movies.
At Tal: There is no 50 minute cutscene in Xenosaga. The max length is 24 minutes, which only occurs once. And it really does have a great story worth spending cutscene time on. I agree that RPGs with bad stories shouldn't have too many cutscenes at all.
And I can be defensive if I want to be defensive. I don't care whether you care. If people aren't interested in what I have to say they can just choose not to read it. It's about a game, yes, but last time I checked most of this forum's posts are about a game too. I guess nobody should care about that either eh?

But nobody is constantly trying to defend Dink Smallwood here, as it's a community for fans of the game, after all... so your logic is flawed.
I guess what I meant to say is that your relentless defense of a game that everyone here is playfully poking fun at and not seriously criticizing is a bit overbearing. I sincerely doubt that this string of posts is truly going to persuade someone to either buy or avoid Xenosaga, so there's no need to go up in arms just because, oh, someone is under the wrong impression and might not play this incredible game.

There's not really much to figure out, the basic premise is that: "There's these Spirit things, and they hurt us and stuff... so we need to get these MacGuffins to save the planet and we will do our dangedest to try and explain *why* they will save the planet. All the while, in this continued stretching of the limits of pseudoscience through our attempts at explanation, we are quickly destroying the viewers' abilities to suspend disbelief." The fact that the movie takes place on Earth in the near future only compounds on the absurd lengths they go through to try and explain their mess of a plot.
Honestly, this movie would have been better off being renamed "Scientology: The Movie. Xenu's Revenge".

Kingdom Hearts II had cutscenes as long as in almost any Final Fantasy game: almost never longer than ~7 minutes, but with a bigass ending of almost 30 minutes.
Personally, I don't like long cutscenes. They make you wait way too much, it's a game, not a movie. (Well, basically I see good games as interactive movies, but not being able to play enough and always having to sit down and wait is... meh. Go rent a movie.)
I think that some games that don't start with a long cutscene can rock, too. I mean, Dink Smallwood does it perfectly fine: it lets you actually play through the "prologue"!

I hated schizm, which basically is a puzzle game set as a movie. You make a mistake, it's 4 moves away and takes half an hour to fix.
The cutscene that really annoyed me had to do with the scientist entering the virtual world. The countdowns that went on forever, the flashing lights, people saying "oh no, don't do this risky thing".
I recently started playing this awesome game called Little Fighter 2. You play as little dudes with magic and special moves and you fight to the death with a bunch of other guys. YOu can create your own characters or edit old ones. It's an awesome game!
Really? It's one of the most interesting approaches to a tutorial that I had ever seen. If the thing would have booted up in one second it would have meant the system software was stable (which it isn't if you played till the end of the tutorial) and that it bears no risks (which it isn't either as you can die). It's just part of the story. Besides, if it's really THAT bad, you CAN skip it.
Best RPG's ever:
-Chrono trigger
-Morrowind (Oblivion was pretty dry)
PS: Monopoly's fun, if not for the whole "It ruins friendships" thing.

I liked Vampire the Masquerade Redemption (yeah I know it's 15+, but hey, I only have 1 year until 15). Battlezone 2 is also great (my "original" game in fact) I also play Little Fighter 2 too
Diablo 2 Lord Of Destruction, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy,

You, sir, are hurting me with that statement.
You, sir, are hurting me with that statement.
That's just your opinion. I personally think 4 and 5 rock the most.
Have everyone heard about Commander Keen 7?You are in Keen's dream that vegies are attacking you.You must defeat the Potatoe King to wake up.It's hard cause you don't have a pistol but a changing seed.
It was maybe the best one in the Keen series.. in my humble opinion. Then again, I think I only got some two-stage demo version of 6. Ah, childhood memories.
There is no Keen 7. Keen Dreams is Keen 3.5.
Keen 7 was going to be "The Universe is Toast!", containing the final showdown with Mortimer McMire. It was never created.

I could never get past that stupid thing.
3.5? Woa. 4 or 5 was the one happening in a spaceship-like setting, then there was one with aliens in a realistic surrounding (woods or so), and the one where veggies attack. Anyway, I was trying to say the vegetable one was great. Whatever the number
That's Keen Dreams a.k.a. Keen 3.5.
The one with the trees, pyramids and so on was Keen 4.
The one in the space ship was Keen 5. It's not available for free (unless you do abandonware).
Keen 6 was in an alien landscape, but more different than in Keen 4.

I've played Keen 4 (at least I think it's 4 - Secret of the Oracle) and really liked it.
Are any of the others free or is it only that one? And where can I get them from?

Unfortunately, only Keen 1, 4 and Dreams are available for free legally. There are abandonware sites out there though, and I could send you the rest of the bunch...
Ah well. I found 1, Dreams and a demo version of 6 so I'll play them for a bit. Thanks anyway
Btw what is abandonware? Is it someone making old programs available for download because they've been "abandoned" by Apogee or whoever?
Edit: Wikipedia says yes. I suppose it was pretty obvious.

It can be illegal, depending on if the copyrights are still there, the original company still exists, or if they released it as freeware anyway. Games like Monkey Island are old, but Lucasarts still hold the copyright and even still sell it in their online shop, so that would be illegal.
However, trying to sue everyone spreading around these old games is nearly impossible and would cost a LOT. Hence the reason a lot of companies don't do too much about it.

A game I find very enjoyable and addicting is Enigma. It's a puzzle/mouse skill game consisting of a lot of short levels to complete. You can download additional levels, or create your own (which is tricky, since no good tools exist).

Yes, and they both refer to the same game. <_<
I like the Harvest Moon games. Yes, even the PS2 one (it plays quite different than the other ones in some aspects).
