Let's see... Xenosaga is a 40+ hour game. It has exactly 7 hours and 49 minutes of cutscene (I have the recorded ones right here on my disk). That means there is still over 32 hours of gameplay in there. Now, I don't know if you play many other games, but games that last 30+ hours inluding cutscenes have become very rare. But let's go one step further. I'm sure many of you have played and like Kingdom Hearts 2. That game has over 8 hours of cutscenes and only about 25 hours of gameplay. Yet, people don't complain and you know why? It's got this pretty Square Enix title pasted all over the box and the gameplay is action oriented giving the impression that it's got more gameplay, whereas an RPG feels slower by default (exploring towns and such).

At Striker: I didn't really like Advent Children. It's the exact opposite of what I like in a movie... All action and no story isn't my cup of tea. It was a movie to satisfy the fanboys and it failed even at that. I liked The Spirits Within a LOT more (which incidentally got bad reviews because of a complex story LOL).

At Tal: It presents the player with a savepoint during cutscene 3 times in the game if memory servers correctly. All are transition cutscenes to move along travel through space or to switch from character viewpoint.

At redink1:
Everyone has their opinion and because you played it (unlike many others) you have a right to comment on it. But, the series of statements you make seem to go against everything everyone thinks about the cutscenes. Yes, even the haters praise it for them. Bad acting? It has a cast of top voice actors, all of who have starred in about a billion other games. Poorly explained? The first hour of Xenosaga lays the foundation for a 120+ hour storyline (it's a saga of 3 games). I'm sure you agree not everything should be divulged in it's first hour. I can't argue against you about poorly directed because that's very subjective I guess... But again, even the haters love the directing... Maybe you got into the game with prejudices? It may start out a bit slow (although at the end of your hour you should have gotten into the action part) but once it starts up it never lets up again.
If you've played an hour you probably reached this cutscene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6QoUu6Y-oM

Let's play a game and find us some other game's ingame cutscenes that are equally as good. No opening or ending (in which case I'll use Xenosaga's opening and ending as well and win by default, hehe). By the way, this is just a random one I picked up on Youtube. I could pick ANY cutscene and it would be just as good...

I probably sound super defensive... well, I am. Because I've taken in some truly unfounded dumb shoot about this game in the past. People got into the whole "it plays like a movie" thing because it was advertised as such and later exaggerated on by reviewers. But don't let my defensive attitude affect you... I'm not attacking anyone, I don't hate anyone, but I do regret that some of the readers on this board may have thought about getting this game or renting it and now changed their minds because of some superficial comments. And that would truly be a shame.
