Daniel, there are clowns. 
Absurd? Well, last time I checked it was set in a fantasy realm. And convoluted? I guess you're a fan of "I figured out the plot in 5 minutes" movies.

There's not really much to figure out, the basic premise is that: "There's these Spirit things, and they hurt us and stuff... so we need to get these MacGuffins to save the planet and we will do our dangedest to try and explain *why* they will save the planet. All the while, in this continued stretching of the limits of pseudoscience through our attempts at explanation, we are quickly destroying the viewers' abilities to suspend disbelief." The fact that the movie takes place on Earth in the near future only compounds on the absurd lengths they go through to try and explain their mess of a plot.

Honestly, this movie would have been better off being renamed "Scientology: The Movie. Xenu's Revenge".
