The Dink Network

User Names

I have seen a lot of interesting user names on the Board and was curious as to their origins. Some of them are fairly self-explanatory, like a first name, but others are more cryptic. How did you pick your user name? What, if anything, does it mean?

(I did a search for this topic under "General Dink Discussion" and "Off-Topic" and couldn't find anything. *Oops* if this has been posted before ).

Mine has quite a neat history to it, which you will find absolutely boring and start a coup to overthrow my stranglehold on the Dink Community. Such is the price of self-appreciation.

Anyway, it all started a number of years ago when my parents first got internet service for our computer. It was a horrible ISP, and I couldn't figure out how to use e-mail at all.

So I found Hotmail, before it was bought out by Microsoft. So I decided to sign up for an account, for which I needed a username. I was quite the raving Mortal Kombat fan, and I was into the 'Whoa, cool, look at all that blood!' thing. So I decided to use the username 'red ink', or 'redink' as a synonym for blood. However, that was already taken, so I decided to tack a 1 onto the end.

This was well before I learned of Dink Smallwood, so its kinda funny how some people interpret my username to be re-dink-1.

My real name is Allison, and when I was very small my parents used to call me "Allikitten." Some years later I was casting around for an internet alias and watching Peter Pan, and adopted captain_hook for a while, and then remembered my nickname from the days of yore and went with allikitten instead.

I have at least 10 other nicks lying around, but none of them are terribly interesting and most are self-imposed (the most notorious being Lissa and KittenOfFire).

Redink, you say "so" a lot... nothing wrong with it, I just noticed it.

Not much of a story behind my name, I just wanted to use a different nickname than bennybignuts, and at first I was going to put something like jewnyur, but I decided that looked too stupid, so I just went with safmoor.

Hmm, how should I explain my username... Well, actually there isn't any kind of a story behind my name. That's it.

This is a (partly) true story.

**Begin transmission**

Hmmm... my name... the story is long and sacred. No one, but the Nunzii of course, know it. If I tell any of you my past, they will come and kill all that read this. But, for those of you either very daring, or very foolish, here is my sad and degenerate story, may it not be read by the ensuing darkness. It all began...

Sharp
Peasant She/Her Finland

I was reading a lot of Elfquest when I was eleven and I decided I had to give myself an elf name.. and then came up with Sharp.
It kinda relates to the chief of an elf tribe being called Cutter, or at least that's what i was thinking back then.

And since then I've used that name.

(side note - at that time I used my also made-up "soulname" as a password everywhere.. *ashamed* )

Kat

We can out-drink most Americans!
Mine was a childhood nickname, as I had a very bad habbit of bringing home stray cats. I never planned on using it on the net, but whilest my youngest daughter was searching for a *user name* for a chat room she had found, she came up with the name "bad kat" as I had past along my childhood habit to her. After quite a few insulting remarks about her name on the net (use your imagination) she changed her name, and gave *bad kat* to me, which over the years, has changed to different combination of the word, although "Kat" is always in there somewheres'

There's no real story behind my nick, and it doesn't mean anything. I just didn't feel like using my real name back when I joined the Dink network, and came up with something.
Although there was some reason why I picked "scratcher"... I just can't recall it right now.

Nowadays I use my real name in most places though.

Phoenix
Peasant He/Him Norway
Back from the ashes
My user name actually originates from a summon materia in Final Fantasy 7 called "Reviving Phoenix" or something like that. I used to play Final Fantasy 7 a lot before I joined here, and I was always fascinated with that bird, and also its name. When I joined the Dink Network for the first time, it was taken though. (This was back when the old db system was still in use) So I named myself alexschrod. Nobody ever used the name Phoenix though, it was just taken for some reason. So, when redink1 made the move to another database system, or whatever he did, and asked us all to re-register, I got my current name as I wanted. Sadly, it's a very popular nick though. I never get to call myself that many other places.

Weee! Nickname discussion!
Anyway, when I first got online 6 years ago, I felt it was time to shake off my old BBS handle "Death Dog" (you had to be tough in that world ) and go for something new. So I looked around my room and saw a Duke Nukem poster. But I was too small to be a Duke, so I went for the somewhat smaller "Dukie" .. Tadaa!

These replies have made for some very interesting reading.

As for my name, Neith is actually an ancient Egyptian goddess. Depending on the source, she was a goddess of the hunt and a goddess of war. She was also a protector of the dead and a guide in the underworld, like a female Anubis. I thought she was a cool goddess.

To my knowledge, though I've seen differing reports, her name, while appearing to rhyme with "Keith", is actually pronounced "night". I then tacked on "skye", creating "night sky", because I love astromony and can often be found with my eye in my telescope.

As you can see, I like to attach meaning when I name things. I can be such a dork sometimes.

Ric

OK I guess mine is kinda obvious. Why 3 letters you ask? When I used to hang out at the arcade plugging every quarter I could beg borrow or steal into an old game called Gravitar. But the high score board only fit 3 letters thus I become Ric.
Elsewhere on the net I am Jackal, a name of a thief I played in AD&D. I felt it was to late to change that here though.

Well I guess mine is very common, although I was formally a PO with the SDPD and earned mine for a sport that is not very popular, especially for a woman - gotcha thinking. Well actually I was a extremely good shot and the guys nicknamed me, not a good name when you are dating, so I just use it on the net only.

Binirit
Peasant She/Her

So you like old Egypt, neithskye? Then you'll like my explanation, I guess.

As a kid I was fascinated by Old Egypt and I knew all the names of all the pharao's and stuff like that. I also wanted to able to read hieroglyphs. But since the real work was far out of reach since you had to be in university for that and I was only 8 or so by that time, I sticked to the books I could get in the library and learned the hieroglyphs that were given in those.
I still have all those hieroglyphes and their translation that I copied by hand from those books...

Anyway, when I had to make up a nick, I decided to use some hieroglyphs. I tried several combinations and ended up with Binirit, which sounded kinda nice with all the letters 'i' and also meant something nice, namely 'lovely sweetness'.

At that time, I hadn't played FF or any of such games, otherwise my nick probably would be something completely else, like 'bloodhound'.

My new nickname came when I grew fascinated with amoebae. I thought of just going by Amoeba, but I decided to stick lord on the end. <Google Search>: No one else on the internet with the name "AmoebaLord".

Timotei's a nasty name for shampoo. That is, because it's a name of a weed in finnish. And I'm even allergic to "timotei".

Mmmm, pizza.
It all started with my email adress, which is 3 and a half years old:

During a very boring Latin lesson at the end of the school year, almost everyone had got a hotmail adress, except for me. So I made one, and I selected 'Joeri@hotmail.com (don't try)' as the one. It already existed, and I could choose fron joeri69, joeri70 or joeri71. That wasn't original at all. And because I played a lot of Magic: The Gathering back then, I made an account joerimagicman@hotmail.com. Since then I always use Magicman as a nick.

My second nick is Tchakkazulu, in case Magicman is owned by someone. That one came from the time I was in Rome with my classmates half a year ago. Because I liked zulus (just the sound of it) and I always said Tchakka, I used the name of Tchakkazulu. Which, of course, relates to Shakazulu, the old leader of the zulus.

Enough now?

Hi, u-all:

This has been an interesting blog:
Well, My birth name was terrible, named for two
uncles. first name Norbert. Well that was'nt two bad, since it was a name of a Saint and a religious order. Then Herbert a baptism name. God what a handle.

My family used to call me Cookie, since my aunt
used to feed me cookies and thought that I was a real sweet child.
When I was studying in Seminary, it was coming around to changing a name for ordination.
So, I picked Matthew, after the Apostle and evangelist. And C. for Constantine, the great empire. After a many years of using the above.
I never again used my original name. When I got injured on a job and eventually on social security disability. The SS administration, decided to use that name. So Now I have been using legally Matthew C. (Constatine) since 1985

Know for some others. Delrevo.
Needed a name for a roleplaying AD&D game a friend of mine created. So my character was to be of noble birth, a warrior/mage So I had a dell computer at one time. And started to use Dell, then by accident a typo in a email became delrev, I anwsered back by O, and it became delrevo. I liked it very much.
Now for Hance: I had a buddy named Lance who
believe it or not family named after Sir Lancelot, in King Arthur's story.
I liked it very much, So I decided to change the L to an H and called myself Hance.

Just recently needed a new email address, I was watching a news thingy about the smuggling of diamonds in south africa flooding the liget diamond industry. So I used the Name Hance Diamond. for my email account.

Thats all for know, have a lovely day.
BTW My first Dmod Bishop'S Quest, that has been over 9 months in production is finished It is in the hands of Dukie to be posted on the
network, hopefully this weekend. Please play the game and let me know how you like it.
send comments to mail to: hance@post.com
PS. If you don't see it up on the board please bug Dukie to put it up. Also moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, on the 5th Oct.
and I am getting a new computer when I arrive with dsl. (very excited about that.)

Peace love, and happiness
