Hey dont you think they should make a Dink d-mod that you can ply online like a big community? You know like where you could be a Goblin,Humen,ect
You could make a profile and make him have like blue eyes and yellow paints or black hair and dark skin.
It could have diferent short qest you could go on and you ask reall people for help or to teach you magic. So there always going to be a level higher than what you are. That would make Dink Smallwood into one of the best games on this earth. Right ? Unknowppl

All I need is an engine code and a sever, and I might be getting tutered by my sis's husbend's brother(Who owns natronix, whitch is a branch of squarsoft, I think). He is in the middle of making a realy cool online game(i.e. Ultama Online). Any way, I'm going to do it if it is at all possible. If any one knows it that 100% cant be done, please tell me so I dont make an ass outa my-self...

You won't get the source since Seth doesn't want to hand it over and a server will cost more money than anyone is willing to donate. It might have been cool, but it's a lost cause.
And I don't think Natronix has anything to do with Square, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Why wont he give me the code? Is it like the patent? I'm not 100% sure it's with squar, but I thought it was, I just know the teem is making a game. Do you konw an estimit on the server?

Seth owns the code so he's entitled to do what he wants with it. Hell, it's his company's game! He believes his code is too unprofessional, so I guess he doesn't want to embarras himself (even though I wouldn't care HOW unprofessional it was!). It's not useful looking for server costs since the whole idea is just a dream.

but it may be easier to reverse engineer the dink engine. Create your own engine capable of loading the graphics, and displaying them as the scripts instruct. You may end up making a better version! Personally, I don't know near enough about c++ to even think about it. But this reverse engineering is how Apple made their machines able to run pc programs. It skirts software copywrite. My point is , if this is realy your dream, it is up to you.

It is the approach of making a program to run scripts that already exist, rather than just making the program and later deciding how the scripts will look and work.

The main reason we can't make an online version of dink is because we can't see exactly how the engine does what it does. We don't have the source code that it was originaly written in. It was written in c (c+ mabey?)a programing language similar to dinkc. It was written then compiled, I assume into machine code, and now just looks like a scramble of different symbols if you even get to see it. I'm thinking someone might have a "decompiler" that would help, but many of the vetrans on this board have tried everything. We don't know the logic or the equations the dink engine uses. Reverse engineering would be an attempt the build a new engine that can duplicate all the same results given the same graphics and scripts. It is harder than it sounds.

If someone reverse engineers dink.exe, they could add all the features we have all been wanting, and also run the original dmods. But, there is already an engine to run the original dmods, so we could just make the new one special for new, more advanced dmods, but them why reverse engineer the old one, just build a newer engine that can make use of the bigger, faster computers we all now have, yet can use older graphics and read the current scripts.
Any takers ??
I have also looked into the modding system used for the infinity engine, and have ideas. The graphics could actually be simpler than either Dink is currently using, or that Baldurs Gate is using, but the dink scripts RULE! It might not be so hard to make such an engine that is simply the best there is.

Copyright is not realy an issue. Even if the idea was still reverse engineering,( and its not any more ). Seth gave rights to everything exept the graphics, which is actually what a new engine would need most. Still not an issue unless it makes money. Getting his o.k. would still be a the right thing to do though. More than anything it would expand Dink modding. And for multiplayer the are several games out there where one person starting the game uses his own comp as a server (ITP?) Personally I can't expect much, since I know almost nothing about c++. I think it's a good idea, but still just an idea. If someone want to try it though, lets talk.

Hey Redman, WinDinkEdit wasn't a reverse engineering of DinkEdit, and also, Seth supported it from the begining when gary asked seth for parts of the format he didn't understand. So up yours!

Well it looks to me like I have some major studying to do, but I'll need some time(I'm getting my GED right now, and won't be done for at least 2 weeks cuz' of scheduling the tests). But after that I'll need to go through all the tutorials and get a programing tutor(Still not sure if nate can help me) and then after I accualy know what the stuff you guys have been saying means than I'll begin putting it together(but thats just me, if anyone wants to help get started that would be cool if you have the free time, I wount be ready for at least 3-4 months most likely). I'm sure(from what was said) that we can get seths aproval for the project after we know exactly what we need and how to do it. Thanks for all the ideas(I wish I knew what they ment...lol) and I'll keep bugging nate to tutor me.

It's very ambitious of you to learn how to program and I'm sure you'll succeed, but don't count on being able to reverse engineer a game engine after 4-5 months. That will take MUCH longer, unless you're a super-genius
And about getting Seth's approval... Maybe, but I wouldn't ask him for too much help...

If we did make a game like this it would have to be a HUGE WORLD and very special you know like you could train in spells and weapons other wise it would be broing it would be bigger then the ariginal map of dink

I'm just talking about starting in 4-5 months, I have know idea if I would ever be able to do it. I thought of the map problem, wouldn't it be possible to make multiple maps(say approximatly 1000 screens, not all land. But like diferant size continants) and just have a "boat" thats part of each map at a dock and you walk up to it and pay money to pass from contanant to contanant(And it would show a screen of a ship like in Mystery Isle). And have lots of smaller maps like for dungens, and abandend mines, Portals to alternet dementions, ect.(Filled with evil all the time so that people can go fight at differant places depending on there lvl) If we rebuild the engine, is it possible to expand the mapping concept to fit that? As for it getting boring, we'll just have to come up with like 100-200 spells(Wich should not be hard, just steal ideas from any game with spells. Heal, attack, positive, negitive( i.e. bless\curse), stuff like that woun't be to hard, the hard part will be the wepons, well need to make a lot more. And is it possible to make 3 or 4 sub catagorys in attack and 2 or 3 in magic (Sword, axe, long range, claric, sorcerer, magician.(i.e. claric mostly healer, socerer mostly attack, magician a mix with more positive and nagitive spells). Well I'm done yappin'. If any of these look good to you guys then please give feed back(also if they are possible after rebuild) Thanks for your time, sorry bout how long it is.

Hey, if you got permission to go try to make a Dink Smallwood online game, all you'd have to do is design an online engine for it and use the graphics. You probably would not NEED to know the code itself, it would probably seem like the game itself.

I'm going to have to re-disign the game style, and it would be easier if I know the code. The way it is now when you try to make new weps and spells it gets realy slow and doesn't work right. besides I need to re-do the item screen too(I've alwase liked a outline of a person with places for items like at hands, i.e. wep\shield\spell book, place for magic rings\necklace, feet, legs, shins, arms, chest, i.e. breast plate, head, i.e. hat or helm, or bandana, and such. And have all the stats next to that, and maybe a map of world in background(Not in detale, just over all big one).

But any way, thats why it would be easier if we had the code, and besides seth did all the work so far, it would be rather rude not to try asking.
