G9 Wishlist (again)
The old G9 wishlist thread was getting a bit out-of-hand, with 186 posts, and many off-topic tangents. So, I've created this new thread. Please post your valuable and insightful suggestions that I will ignore with great prejudice.
So does that mean that you will see some new changes soon, and I can expect my inbox to be flooded with hate mail? That is a distinct possibility.

A suggestion for this thread: a summary of everything (serious) that was suggested in the last thread? Otherwise a lot is just going to be repeated.
Edit: I just noticed the old unstickied thread. I thought it had disappeared completely, so sorry for making the first useless post!

It is still a good idea, as the old thread will most likely go down into the depths of the forum history.
I did link to it in the first post, for easy access to the old ideas.
Well, I would like custom avatars, like I've stated before. Just small ones, though...
get rid of the i am not a spambot i mean before i got an account i was waisting crap typing it givedinkers witout an account a break
It's to prevent spambots, duh! I thought it was obvious. Besides, if you're not a spambot, get an account!
guys, if you WANT a custom avatar, then GO TO CHAOTIC DINK! http://chaoticdink.awesomewebspace.com
you can even upload YOUR OWN custom avatar!
you can even upload YOUR OWN custom avatar!
Heh, you're quite like a spammer, aren't you? I think you've posted that same "advertisement" at least five times since you created that forum? Don't you realize that if people really wanted custom avatars, and give up everything else this site has to offer, they'd be at your place by now?
i'm not saying they have to give up this site, i'm just saying that if they want custom avatars than they can come over to CHD and have them there, as well as signatures, ranks, and more little smilies than you can think of
This thread was opened to get rid of all the spam in the first thread, so, for the love of the ancients, stop your spamming and get ontopic.
FB5 Stop spamming about CHD it will never be as good as here!
How about fixing the chat thingy.
Maybe a most commonly downloaded files, or high level files page.

What about a 'favourite files' list? One that anyone can view?
Ha ha, the "I am not a spambot" was added recently. To, you know, maybe, stop spambots from posting?
I have never had to type "I am not a spambot" in there, anyway. The field is gone as soon as you properly log in.

U CANZ HAVE A CUSTOM AVATER OMG!!1
Other than that, there's absolutely nothing. Small extras like avatars do not make a forum popular, in fact, if that's the only thing you have, it'll fail.

I think it would be great to have a link to all the news of that file. (All means: Updates, the first news of the file ever etc.) in the site you can download the file... in all files
And you don't even have to use the field if you supply your username and password in the appropriate boxes. Wow!
I wouldn't really mind even if it had to be typed in every time after getting used to CAPTCHAs on nearly every site, oftentimes so obscure you have to try at least a few times before getting them right.
those dang captcha images... i know they are for security reasons, but i just don't get why they are all squiggly and hard to read sometimes

If it's too hard for you, then it's harder for the robots, lol.
one day, i'll make a robot that can understand certain cptchas. then the world will finally know how smart i REALLY am! but, first: a programme that can convert those dang POSTDATA.ATT form information sent through internet explorer, into something a bit more readable. dang, that should be easy
If it was that easy, captcha's wouldn't stop spambots in the least.
Also, DON'T. MAKE. THAT. Or at least, NEVER release it. Unless you want to do the guys that make spambots a favor.

i will only use it for myself, to prove how smart i am. anyway, when i said it would be easy, i wasn't talking about the anti-captcha bot.
Not that I want to spam this topic, but they do actually have programs like that. They run a program with a virtual stripper, who takes off clothes when people translate the images for them. Pretty smart.
Actually, someone already made it, I just noticed. Plus I found some awesome security that's difficult to crack, unless the bots set up a huge database of pictures and relations.
If you want to be "smart", create an useful project or application.

I think it would be good to have a box or something on the home page for newbie help, directions to file discussion and Dink Solutions etc. because often the same question gets asked many times on the board.
How about a link right beside DOWNLOAD NOW that says somthing along the lines of "Check out the sequel" or "Part 2" from one file in a series to another.
I.E. Cloud Castle 1>Cloud Castle 2
I.E. Cloud Castle 1>Cloud Castle 2
whoa... TDN just got all different! dang, it will take a while for me to get used to this...
Can the files page get some sort of hierachy in the file catagories? It should make it easier as someone might now miss the point that a romp is actually a DMOD...
Rewrite rules for the forums URLs would be a nice .
Connect "new" posts with username instead of browser. Shouldn't be too much work. I don't know exactly how this forum does it now, (though I assume it is time based, seeing how the only cookies I could find related to the DN were time stamps, forum options and username/password.) but implementing this shouldn't cost much more than a single new column in the database.
When I'm at home, it works fine, but when I go to school and check the board there, then posts all the way since last time I checked are marked as new, and then when I get home, the ones I saw at school are still marked as new at home.
I've tried convincing you to store exactly what posts have been viewed and not so that even if you don't view all posts, they'll still be marked as "new" the next time you come, but that was apparently not interesting, so now I'm downgrading my wish to just allowing a centralized way of storing forum access.

That sounds like a great idea to me. Especially if you haven't visited the board for a few days and you are trying to catch up, it would be very handy...

3,000 users * 86,000 posts = too much data
(granted, there are ways to limit the amount of data, but I haven't found a good way yet)

just use cookies (mmm... chocolate chip... hey, WHO SPILLED CHOCOLATE ON MY COMPUTER'S CIRCUITS!)
Are you dimwitted or something? The whole point of my wish was to avoid using cookies so that the forum would be the same no matter where in the world you are, as long as you're logged in. Using cookies to serve that purpose is rather self-defeating.
Yes, yes, but you can at least store the access time of the forum centrally instead of per-browser, right? That's not too much additional storage.
why don't you have a text file or something that keeps track of only the first page of topics
Text file? You have a lot to learn, young padawan.
Actually, we were seriously contemplating recruiting Phoenix to do every tedious, self-harm-inducing task available.
Striker, young and willing, will bow to Phoenix's carnal desires during his daily 5-minute break.

Hey, not until I'm done with your mom.
wish list??? I wish this site wasn't boring!! go to http://gmcx.has.it for a NON boring forum, it has a dink smallwood section.
But here in America, she finishes you.
I'd give you credit for a job well done if not for the fact that you were the first to resort to the poor "your mom" line of humor in the first place. Fail.
You don't know anything about this site, obviously. Go away.
Apparently, it's possible to edit posts even after a user has been banned (so he can't add new posts but it's possible to edit old posts); I think this should be changed so a user can't edit his posts after being banned. See the second post by ashsashs in this thread for example (and various others as well).
Ok, another suggestion.
Can we design the 'new' labels in such a way that threads containing only new deleted posts don't show up with the 'new' label. It is pretty annoying...

I believe that DMod contests should occur at least four times in a year.
Oh, and want to suggest not to interchange DMod for banana again, like happened some day of this year.

I'm sorry it didn't meet your high standards of approval, Tal. God knows you never, ever resort to a cheap sex jokes. Oh wait... that's right, you started off with one, so I guess it looks like you have no real footing for your argument.
One good turn deserves another.
One good turn deserves another.
Sex jokes aren't classy by any means, but I'm of the opinion that the "your mom" string of humor is far beyond expired. The wonderful thing about the subject of sex is that it's (somewhat) flexible and always relevant!
Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
...yeah... the original intent has failed miserably.
haha
haha
Well, I've always been of the opinion that a "huh, huh, you're g4y" joke is about the equivalent of a "your mom" joke.
The "New" icon has changed!
It's just a minor change to accomodate for the light forum theme (it's got a border now). It's been like that almost since the beginning of the new forum theme.
Another suggestion: it would be good if unread private messages were stickied somehow, because if you PM someone who only visits occasionally there's a good chance the message will have fallen off the first page and they'll never see it.
Perhaps an easier way to do effects and smileys without javascript, (sorry if it has already been said or something has changed but I only read half the topic and I've been away for a few months.)
After careful thought I came up with something else I had forgotten, a ranking system, not something big or important just a couple more ranks. We have peasant for the masses, noble for the moderators, King for Tal and Jester for Josh but if we had a rank for those who had contributed a file of any decency and another for those who had released a substantial number of good development files and had knowledge of scriptwriting it would give an incentive to produce good work and it would recognise those who had contributed something to the dink network, maybe one for someone who had been an active member for a long time as well.
We've (er, they) have decided against additional ranks eons ago. It's been rejected before, so I don't think they'll change their mind this time around.
I think something to bring recognition to long-time active members would be nice. Not three months of activity either; I'm talkin' about people who have been here for years.
It probably won't happen though, and I can almost guarantee there will be no other ranks to speak of.
It probably won't happen though, and I can almost guarantee there will be no other ranks to speak of.
A smiley/formatting box can only be done with JavaScript and is actually not so difficult to do.
Yeah I've seen them before, I meant without the user having to type in javascript not without actually using javascript at all.
You're the webmaster, you can add whatever you like
Josh is a jester? Aww, no fair. I wanna be one too!
EDIT: Wait a sec...he's not a jester! He's a bard!!
*GASP* That's what I wanted!!
I wants the green star! The shiny, pretty precious.
Must have my precious. Give us the precioussssss.

The green star would imply that you're a staff member, and we've already got an excess of those.
Another thought came to me but I'm not sure if G9 still exists, anyway I have been recently getting annoyed that when I post something and I go back to the board it's still marked as new and I have to got back to the topic to unmark it.
How weird... you can mark single posts as "read" by opening? That doesn't happen to me, it's still got that time limit to it (unmark everything after 5 minutes).
The site's operating under the G9 architecture right now. (It sounds fancier than it really is.) However, not all of the phases are complete, as you can read about in the most recent Recondite. Thus, suggestions are still open.
Sorry I meant the grayedoutness for when you click on the link. The 'new' marker is still the same for me.
I'd like to see the option of blocking someone from your private message forum. The private message forum is unmoderated for as far as I know, so...
Maybe we should have a buddy list as well, just like we had with the old private messages system.
Maybe we should have a buddy list as well, just like we had with the old private messages system.
You mean something similar to the old personal message system I don't think it had any feature to ignore users. Though, I might be wrong.
Er...this is something I've only REALLY noticed recently, sorry for not bringing it up before (like when it might have been useful).
Under preferences, you can set your time zone, but there's no GMT +12 or +13, which means the closest I can get to my own time is 1 hour out. Not that it's been a huge issue for me, but think of all those Kiwi/Tongan Dinkers who CAN'T do math!

The timezones have been complained about numerous times, it propably wouldn't have made a difference.
They're 3 hours off for me, I get the right time at -1 GMT, actually living at +2.

Word from the ex-King is that it will probably be fixed eventually.
Eventually as in, next Century some time.
Hey, if that's when you want it, that's when you'll get it!
i wish a dink with friendly dragons ashusahuas come it would be very nice, if i knew how to do this i would make but i don't know so i hope someone do this
O.o

I have a suggestion. How about somewhere, you can view a user's join date. I'm always curios as to when I joined, as well as some others.
I know, lame, I don't know when I joined.
I know, lame, I don't know when I joined.
I think that if that feature's to be implemented now, all current members wouldn't have a join date anyway since it was never stored. So it'd only really work on new members.
Dan never thought to store it? I thought he was smart than that!
I really don't know, but it doesn't seem logical to create a table column in the database to store that stuff if you're not going to have it show up anywhere anyway. So I figure it's just not there.
I am not smart than that. The join date is not stored.
Alas, my join date will forever remain unknown...
All is not lost. You could go further back in the forum topics, and hopefully find your very first post.
But what if you joined two years before your first post ever?
I remember DinkDudes first post!
You guys are weird it was.
And his very reply was made me by. Shouted to him I did then!
And me stop talking Yoda, now.

"...&qu
Small bug that may already be known: username is not always rendered correctly when username ends with quotation marks (there may be other special characters that it handles incorrectly, but I can't very well go around creating random topics to test that).
I have put "..." into the username box for this post. On a recent post I tried this, and it was interpreted as "...&qu
Let's see what happens.

Typo: the system returns an &qu instead of the full ", lol.

The current design is fine, but maybe make it darker (black?). Or simply go back to something like 8.5.
By the way, what generation are we on now?
By the way, what generation are we on now?
So, what do you people think that would suit Generation 10, even though Redink1 is gone?
G10 isn't really anything worth discussing right now (if ever). redink1 said in January, "I still have some plans for G9 Phase 4 that I'll probably implement in the next few months." Basically, G9 has still not yet been finished. I can't tell you when it will be, though.
Lookie what I found, DD95:

TDN's search feature is pretty good.

I would like the frame to be 1 pixel width, like it appear in the list of lurkers, at the right.
And it could be good to remove that white frame in between, or maybe not, I dont know.

How about linking together somehow D-Mod sequels, trilogies and such? Maybe a section for them in the files list.
Eg, A Knight's Tale, Stone of Balance, Cast Awakening (*cough*), Cloud Castle etc.

I'd like to see a counter for each file how many times they've been downloaded. It would be quite neat I guess.
I agree with that actually, a counter would be interesting.
Of course then we could have dlspammers repeatedly downloading a D-mod to get its count up, especially the authors if downloads affected the rating

"How about a small star/icon under the avatar for those authors who have released a file that has won Download of the Year, or one of the contests? It's not a particularly useful thing to implement... but I think it would be better than a reputation system.
As I make it, those included would be Redink (x3), Simonk (x2), Paul Pliska, Simeon, Metatarasal and... myself.
Or perhaps something related to those who have released an Epic rated 9 or over? I don't know - Just spewing ideas out. Feel free to kick them into touch."
Quoted from Sabretrout. The second part with the epic rated above 9 is just so awesome; we got to do something with this. Great idea!
By the way, who is in charge of making those changes?

I know this thread's kind of old, but I have a suggestion.
We should all have somekind of a note line in our profile. You could write something e.g: Your password there, in case you fear you forget it then when you go to your profile, then you could see the note, but anyone else can't.
The password's only a suggestion. You could write anything down there.

Hey Skull, wouldn't you have to actually know and type in your password to login and see the notepad thing anyway if you wanted to see your password in this notepad?
jk, but not a bad Idea. Lots of websites implement that kind of thing, mostly forums.

Staff can view how many posts different members have made. It's extremely important information and is therefore not available to the great unwashed.

Yeah, that's why I said password for example. It was a bad example. Maybe something else.

Yeah, fix the screenshot problem!
But if we are going to bring the DOTM back, as Christiaan says, we should put the "awards" stuff back to the D-Mods site. I remember when you went to download the D-Mod, you could see what awards it had. For example, CC 2 had the award of October 2003 DOTM.
And if you understood at all what I meant , yeah, bring it back.

Can you please make a function that means that we can choose not to bump a thread when we post in it?
Also, some way to prevent 4 year old threads from being bumped would be nice.
