"How about a small star/icon under the avatar for those authors who have released a file that has won Download of the Year, or one of the contests? It's not a particularly useful thing to implement... but I think it would be better than a reputation system.
As I make it, those included would be Redink (x3), Simonk (x2), Paul Pliska, Simeon, Metatarasal and... myself.
Or perhaps something related to those who have released an Epic rated 9 or over? I don't know - Just spewing ideas out. Feel free to kick them into touch."
