Discussion hour's back and here's the topic :

For a while now there's been money in the community fund, but it hasn't been used for anything so far, mainly because there were still some questions as to what could be done with it. We decided to let you all have a say in it, kind men that we are.
So, what do you want to see done with the money? Do you want it to be used for contests and if so, what should the reward be? An item from the store or something completely different? And if it's a contest you want, what should the contest be about exactly?
Perhaps you're thinking of something totally different, either way, head down to the comments and P.O.S.T. Now!

Well first of all, let me say that their's no need to rush out and spend it just to spend it. If nothing presents itself hang on to it for the time being, something will come up sooner or later.

A contest would be cool, something similar to the alt hero contest, where you make a d-mod in a limited time (maybe a little longer?) following some set of rules. Unless someone has a better idea, stuff from the store would be fine as a prize.

Other than that I think it would be best used for any upgrades to the website of one sort or another. I don't suppose a better file host is within the price range.

Hrm... any ideas for a contest? I've been trying to think of one, but no good ideas are presenting themselves. Perhaps an "Evil Hero" contest? But what should the map/size/time limits be?

As for a new file host... yeah, I looked around last year, and I found that for the bandwidth requirements we need, it isn't even close.

how about a contest to create an evil hero D-mod with prizes in all 3 length catagorys and it ends this fall?

I think contests would be great, but not only about making dmods. Not everyone in the dink network would be able to participate, and that wouldn't be fair How about a simple contest like guess the dmod or something? Okay so I'm bad at ideas.. but it's a start.

I agree... either you teach me how to make a DMOD so that i can enter the contest.... or make it something simpler like.. who can hold their breath for the longest time?

perhaps a series of contests? you could have "best sprite series", "best dmod", "best new scripting idea / best new use of the dink engine", "best sound effect / best MIDI", "best dev file".... etc. etc. etc.

all the entries would have to be previously unsubmitted... probably... anyway, shirt for everyone eh?

how about real rewards for dmod of the month/year?

I thought about this, but its sorta easy to cheat for the DOTM/DOTY. All you need is friends from all over the world, have them sign-up for accounts, and then vote for your file.

I also like the evil hero d-mod contest or maybe a d-movie that only has cutscenes (much easier for people with little scripting knowledge). As a reward I would suggest something from the store, but then, how will import costs be resolved?

If you could cheat for DOTM/DOTY, couldn't you cheat for the Evil Hero D-Mod contest? Unless you set up a different voting system. Or something.

but I would spend it on a other way.
I don't like the way how you can download a D-Mod. first you have to sign-up and so.
I think people that want to download something sometimes not want to sign-up so maybe you loose some visitors.
I would be easier if we have our own space.
but this is just what I think.

In the event of a contest with an prize, the Senior Staff and myself would decide upon a winner. We could still participate for the fun of it, but we couldn't win a prize.

Yeah... but hosting files would cost a lot more than what we could ever dream of, like $100 a month. Unfortunatly, we have to stick with FilePlanet.

Well, we may be able to afford a file server if we were to put banner ad's on the site. What does everyone think of that?

True, but then we do want more people to enter the contest, not just those who would do it for fun (not that many I think, considering the previous contest only had 3 entries).

I think the best use for such money would be to update the dink engine. I don't know if we would need to buy the source from RTsoft, or give RTsoft some specs for Dink v.2.0 , but imaging what could be done! Better math support, smooth screen scrolling, multiple characters.... wow.

Put banner ads on the site? You mean more banner ads? Because last time I chusted you already had one on pretty much every page.

1) Gamespy wouldn't allow us to put more banner ads up.

2) I think WC meant banner ads on the hypothetical file server... so it would link to a page with an ad, and that page would have a link to the file.

Gamespy is about the worst people I think you could use, maybe you could make a contest on who can find a better one then give them a prize

If your going to have prizes, well, it seems international shipping is slow. For example: I still haven't gotten that shirt. It's been a little while, eh?

So why not have the *10 question* game? Have 10 questions about the dmods (not how to make them, but about them in general). i.e. What is Dink's Sisters' name? make them hard so many dmods would have to be played. Give a prize to whoever gets them all right in a certain amount of time. Oh yes, the staff would not be eligible. Make it a monthly event. Or you could buy me a new computer. >^..^<

I don't know if that's a real suggestion, but I agree, anyone who found a better file host would certainly deserve a reward.

A "New Avatar" competition... these ones are getting old! Or of course you can do another one of those banner competitions, the one that wolf one last time.

Or how about a "Dink Fan Site" competition.

Maybe an idea for another competition competition

Or a "Name Dink's Piggies" competition... or a "Dink Story" competition...

The list goes on..

i say get some stinkin headless ducks shirts, not with cafepress, like get em printed. you can get some black shirts for 4-5 $ each. sell em and dont get ripped off like that garbage. make more money, and then use it to adopt a road or buy park benches or artwork or something. you know like "donated by the DINK SMALLWOOD society"

I think Dink T-shirst for contest winners would be great! A cherished momento.....

A 'Dink Story' contest would be cool. Hey, BTW, what happened to the monthly story section? I suddenly realised it dosen't exist anymore.

Now that I think about it, cash prizes for best dmod and best develop file would be incentive for people to make things.

It became a big mess so our king tore it down. There was really no use keeping it up, the story being "and then dink had fun with the fabulous marshmallows" style...

The story section was abandoned simply because it wasn't used much anymore.

using it for contests would be plain.. st.. well something.. I mean, I'd just win

the most perfect use of money would be something that the whole community would gain from.. such as hardware for a server or what not.. or saving up for the dink source

Using the community fund to buy the Dink source (as some people have sugguested) just isn't an option... Seth doesn't want to make the Dink engine open source, and I doubt paying him a hundred bucks would make him change his mind. However... I do recall a plan to get Seth to release the source... perhaps I'll pursue it once more.

I think we better make a poll. if it is possible. I think that that will be a bit easier. and you will see what the most people want.

i like joshriot's idea, yeah its good. Cause then people would be like "wha?" and then people would laugh because its the "dink smallwood bench/ statue/ highway. ooh We could commision a statue of Dink and donate to a park that needs statues and write the web adress as part of the plaque, and then more people would play and buy clothes and stuff.

then lets buy some land somewhere and put a statue of dink there!

what about donating it to people for getting REAL dink smallwood tattoos? oh yeah, i would get one.

I suggested an Anti-hero d-mod contest a fair while ago, and I think it is a very good idea.

Well that's what happens over the course of so many years But it's also gained new members and some have returned
