It would be fun to bring more dinkers here, and a way is to improve the whole game.
Im talking about maybe do:

*Multiplayer
*All-converted to 3D
*An inventory with armor pieces(like helm, chest-piece etc.)

I dont now how and who that should try to do it, just wanted to share my thoughts
(sorry if threads like this have been posted before)

Armor is easy to be done and already used in a few D-Mods I'm also planning to do it myself.

As has been said many times before, these upgrades will probably never be applied to Dink Smallwood.

However, Seth (creator of Dink, of course) is currently working on an RPG which I believe is 3D, and he seems to mention Dink in most posts related to it lately.. so there is the slight possibility that a Dink 2 is in the works. But let's not jump to conclusions.

Found on rtsoft.com:

Picked up an intel macmini and linux box, and now have the new gameproject fully running on PC, OSX universal binaries, and linux. Cool!

The game engine itself is taking shape, it now has rigid bodyphysics and LUA scripting.

Starting to move into AI, it's a blast working on this, kind of my chance to take my time and build a game engine right. Man, if only I'd had this while making Dink!

So what's the new game? Uh, I'll get back to you on that.

Mmk.. my bad, my memory is apparently quite spotty because I see nothing about 3D on RTSoft's site. But I never said I was definitely sure, so.. My apologies anyway for getting your hopes up, some of you. (though I prefer 2D personally)

The post Simeon quoted was from just two or three weeks ago; here's an older one from January that also alludes to Dink (and mentions 2D, d'oh):

I've been puttering away fulltime on new games for a few months now.

I've got two projects going but the one that is most interesting to me is a hardware accelerated 2D game - I've been working on the game engine and editor and it's pretty sharp. Supports some really nifty features, for instance, internally, it doesn't use tiles at all, but the editor can emulate tiles, even using many tile sizes in the same map! (Thanks for the idea, Lerc!)

As a test, I wrote an importer for the original Dink map, it was neat seeing the entire Dink map with full zoom capabilities, you can smoothly zoom out from one screen to show the entire map at once! I put up some screenshots here and here.
Uh, just to be clear the new game doesn't use Dink tiles, it's just a test.


Note how he says the new game doesn't use Dink tiles, but he doesn't say that the new game isn't a new Dink. Also, he's working on two projects. Hrm... I sure wish he'd announce something, it's been a pretty good while since we saw something totally new out of the RTSoft camp, for those of you who keep up with it.

I think we all love Dink because of the way it is. There a lot of multiplayer games, 3D games, etc, but dink is one of the few that have the posibility to make those cools things called DMODS. This is the only thing that keeps it actual after almost 9 years.

There's more than the options of he's working on it or he is not working on it. In this case, he is *probably* working on it, but we don't know for sure. Hell, he could be working on something entirely new, we just don't know.

Wouldn't it be possible to make a 2 player Dink game where you will always stick together like in the same screen? And that if someone leaves the screen the other one automaticly follows? I don't know if it's possible with the stats but in the worst case they could be shared too. It may not be much but if it works its a good beginning.

If someone can help me with my ideas and skill set, we could make a Dink style multiplayer online game, but it uses a totally different engine. The Quake2 Engine. Yes I know, your wondering why use a multiplayer Deathmatch game to make a multiplayer RPG? Well its becuase for one, I was making an RPG with a programmer, and we got halfway done with the project but quit do to different interests in ideas and what we wanted. But since you guys are into the 2D aspect of game design, and used to top-down-view... we or who ever could make a 3D version of Dink, using the Q2 engine. This is all we will need to make it.

Modelers: To make items, characters, weapons, ect.

Map Designers: Like me, I can design and make maps for the Q2 engine and game.

Programmers: Ones who know C++ and can tear appart or redesign the Quake2 engine, and yes! There is a free source!

Texture Artist: Like me, can create textures for walls, floors, and other things like that.

Skin Artist for Models: Someone who knows well how to texture models, I could do it, but I am not good at it as I am with textureing wall and floor textures.

Story Editor: Someone to make a story for the game, and do Quests.

If somoene wants to do this, and want to be serious, then let me know here! I would love to get back into game design with Quake2 and make an awsome RPG style remake for all of us Dink lovers.

I like Quake 2 better as its easier to work with and I am used to and the graphics are not too fancy. I do not think the engine should not matter as long as its 3D looks half decent and has a very good game style and game play.

Forgot to post this too, The Q2 Engine source is free, not the Q3 engine. Also I only have Q2 and worldcraft plus texture editors on my computer right now, and not Q3.

Must have been recent, becuase when I was working on "Band" an RPG style game using the Quake2 engine it was not even out. But anywas I rather it be Q2 engine as it can run in software mode for slower computers.

Multiplayer = need a server, need a server = need hundreds of pounds a month, need hundreds of pounds a month = impossible... Unless you charged money to play it, advertised it and got advertising on it..

Aswell as that, nobody around here could be arsed to code a multiplayer version.

Dink 2 seems very unlikely to me, I would say seth's probably working on something completely new..

Sorry to be so pessimistic, but it's just what I think , thats why I left this place, dink's going under.. Sorry.

No, Q2 has max player settings, and this is good for controlled servers. We should not worry about hackers in early stages, we can work through people hacking there characters later. So we can save character info on the clients computers not servers. Right now we could use the Q2 engine to have several servers at once. You can host Q2 with 1Mbps or faster connections, and 56k can play just fine too if the server is good enough. Rather it be 1 and 1 players or 1 - 8 players. The whole idea is to be able to play together in multiplayer, even if the server is DSL or ADSL or Cable. That was the whole point of using the Q2 engine, not to be a mmorpg, but more of a multiplayer rpg that can be played on any server, not just 1 server dedicated to all clients. Think of it as like Diablo or Diablo II, where you have multiple servers hosted and listed that the user can choose between to join and play.

Yeah cant say i have any idea who Little Mac is.. Theres Tal again making up people, doesnt know where the heck he is in life. For the multiplayer talk, yeah i scrapped the dink mmo i was working on.. When i fixed 1 error 5 more errors sprouted from it meaning i wasnt actually fixing it just making myself feel better by saying i was. I have to say though, the 5+ people on the same screen error was PRETTY dang cool, and the fireball error.. *giggle* anyways, yeah it wont happen. as people have said it would ruin Dink

well not to bring old posts up without a good reason, so I take no one is even willing to try to make Dink 3D the simpleist way possible? I still have Worldcraft, Quake2, and Wally. I am still able to texture and make maps for Quake2, just need someone willing to program this idea. Without a programmer this cant happen period. But if yall gave up on the idea totally just let me know here. Becuase Dink is taking up space on my computer, and I am past 2D games, hell I cant even run 640x480 games anymore, I have to run them window mode. So are yall guys going to keep up with the times, or not? Technology is changing so fast, at least with Quake2 you can run 1920x1080 32 bit, which would be awsome for an RPG like Dink. Especially if you want it 3D. Heck it even can run in software mode like I said years ago. Try running Q3 or any other engine in software mode that is as easy as the Quake2 engine? I bet you have a hard time finding an engine as flexible as Quake2...

There is a open source for free for Quake2 off www.idsoftware.com all it takes it some programming and changing the camera posistion to be top view and someone with model editing/creating and textureing expereince. I can make the maps if you wanted and the textures in the map... Its very easy to do for a programmer with expereince in programming in C++.

The graphics of the original game are made for use in screens with 620x400 pixels, so if you're playing it on 1920x1080 you'll have a pretty tiny portion of the screen actually covered by the actual game (= windowed mode). The other option would be to stretch the original graphics, but that would be the same kind of situation we have now.

So if you can't use the old graphics and you're using a new engine it'd probably be impossible as well to play old DMODs with it. So really, it ends up being a completely different game.

This is like EA taking a first person shooter and calling it 'Need for Speed'. Sure, you could make a new game this way, but it wouldn't be Dink.

I dont mean Dink the Quake2 I mean make a new RPG with the style and look of Dink but just better graphics, I can make new textures or can even use old textures and modify them to fit for Quake2 style. I have already done some of this with a MOD/Remake called Band (as in band of players) and have the source for it. I was just hoping I could find a programmer who was willing to dabble into Quake2/Band source and help my Vision and many others of a RPG with a Deathmatch edge if you can understand the dynamics of this game.

Have Dink style story mode, NPC's, and Monsters and all the players, custom armor/weapon parts for the players so they all look different. And be able to level up off fight monsters and everyone else. Have a full range of inventory/status features and allow levels higher than 99 maybe 999 max. It can be done top view, its just no one really has tried to something like this. The closest I seen is some MOD that has a level system but no custom content and graphics and it done have swords, axes, and armor. All it has was normal Quake2 weapons.

Anyways, I was not trying to imply to make Dink 3D, but make a game simular to Dinks style but in 3D with custom graphics and maps.

Well, as much as I love seeing a new game in that series, the transition from 2d to 3d does look terrible... Not to mention completely unnecessary, since it's still a sidescroller.

I'm not sure you'll find many people willing to learn new languages and such, just to make a 'Dink 3D', which is effectively what you are suggesting. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, I actually like your plan, but as I said, not many people would be too willing to help with something like this.

But what about Novashell, though? Has anyone ever thought of making something Dink related to this. I know the download comes with a quick demo of what you can do, and I thought it was pretty cool. I mean, it's not 3D, but you know... scrolling screens, a little more realism with the turning and speed stuff. Doesn't it all sound wonderful? I might actually give it a go, someday.
