No, Q2 has max player settings, and this is good for controlled servers. We should not worry about hackers in early stages, we can work through people hacking there characters later. So we can save character info on the clients computers not servers. Right now we could use the Q2 engine to have several servers at once. You can host Q2 with 1Mbps or faster connections, and 56k can play just fine too if the server is good enough. Rather it be 1 and 1 players or 1 - 8 players. The whole idea is to be able to play together in multiplayer, even if the server is DSL or ADSL or Cable. That was the whole point of using the Q2 engine, not to be a mmorpg, but more of a multiplayer rpg that can be played on any server, not just 1 server dedicated to all clients. Think of it as like Diablo or Diablo II, where you have multiple servers hosted and listed that the user can choose between to join and play.
