The graphics of the original game are made for use in screens with 620x400 pixels, so if you're playing it on 1920x1080 you'll have a pretty tiny portion of the screen actually covered by the actual game (= windowed mode). The other option would be to stretch the original graphics, but that would be the same kind of situation we have now.
So if you can't use the old graphics and you're using a new engine it'd probably be impossible as well to play old DMODs with it. So really, it ends up being a completely different game.
This is like EA taking a first person shooter and calling it 'Need for Speed'. Sure, you could make a new game this way, but it wouldn't be Dink.
