Coronavirus - how are you doing?

March 23rd 2020, 09:43 AM

So... In the age of the zombie apocalypse, how's it going with you?

I've been at home all last week with a cough (unlikely covid-19 though) and now back at work, still coming into the office as it's only 2 of us here anyway in a large room.
My wife has the harder job though, self-isolating at home with 3 young boys off school!

My mother, brother and sister are all high-risk so it's scary times.

What's going on in your part of the world? Hope everyone's healthy.

Oh - plus I have toothache but the dentist is not seeing anyone unless it's an emergency. Yay...

How are we doing? Fair. My pop will probably not take the good care of himself like he should, and he has a bad pair of lungs.

Yes, these are scary times.

I'm in a high risk group and my wife is in several high risk groups. Our local grocery store has decided to offer VERY early AM shopping for people in high risk groups (so that our exposure to other people who might have it, but are asymptomatic, is low).

I wish that "The Orange Monster" had not disbanded our Federal Pandemic Response Team years ago and had also been more concerned about the people of this nation instead of his chances for re-election a few short months ago, but there is nothing we here in the states can do about that (it seems) until November.

Take Care

Playing games, studying for an exam I will (hopefully) be having in two months, and generally going insane because I want to go out. Romania is in "scenario 3" and that is when theres between 100 to 1000 infected. Yesterday it's been 433, today it's 576, so it's safe to say by the end of the week the country will enter "scenario 4" whatever that entails.

I wanna die

EDIT: I was wrong, scenario 3 is between 100 and 2000. So maybe by the end of the month, then.

EDIT 2: This month ends at the end of this week so uh.....yeah..

Well, I'm fine. Can't say my mood improved, but that's another mattter. I'm used to be inside - I spend most of my time inside. I doubt we'll ever get the coronavirus. But it would be not good for my family if any of us got infected. My grandparents are old, and my sister is just 6. The other members of my family would very likely survive, so I don't worry about them. Most of us are home, it's only my mother who still goes to work. As for your tootache, it must suck. I can relate. Of all the physiscal pains I've experienced, it would pobably have a high rank on the list.

It might not seem like its all hysteria if you or someone you care deeply about are in one of the high risk groups for this contagion.

and wish someone would hold media accountable for this garbage.

The media did not create this problem, though it is certainly true they have rather heavily responded to everyone's justifiable concern about it. Heck, even "Fox News" ( the unofficial Orange Monster State Media ) is taking it seriously now. Then there are the external state actors that are making things worse by deliberately spreading misinformation. Sigh...

Perhaps you are not aware of a few things that make this Covid-19 outbreak more serious than "any other yearly virus before it where people get sick, then they either get better or they don't depending on if they're old/feeble". I assume you're referring to the flu virus.

It is certainly true that flu virus family has been plaguing mankind for more than 100 years and that it kills thousands every year, but at this time in history, we can (and do!) reduce it's impact with vaccines. Even then, it mutates and forces drug companies to scramble to modify their medications for it every year. We have no vaccine against Covid-19. There are many things we do not know about this new disease. Some things we do know are that it is part of a family of Corona viruses, that include the following:

o The "common cold"
o SARS (Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related virus)
o MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome virus)
o SARS-CoV-2 virus (which causes the COVID-19 sickness that is big in the news lately)

SARS first appeared in 2003, infected about 8,000 and killed 774 (a 9% mortality rate).
MERS first appeared in 2012, infected about 2,500 and killed 862 (a 34% mortality rate).

It is true that the main way the SARS-CoV-2 virus spreads is from sick people to those who are not sick. However, spread might be possible even if people show NO symptoms for up to 5 days before symptoms appear. There have been reports of this occurring across the globe. Another problem is that symptoms of COVID-19 vary greatly from person to person, making it hard to be certain who is infected.

COVID-19 has (in the past 3 1/2 months) killed more people than SARS and MERS combined in the last 17 years. And (if we don't get control of the rate of infection through practices like social distancing and quarantine) the SARS-CoV-2 virus is just getting started.

But those numbers are not the real numbers that matter. Scientists (epidemiologists) talk about something called an "R0 number" for diseases like this. The "R0 number" represents the number of people that each infected person can potentially infect. Any virus with an "R0 number" of 1.0 or greater shows exponential (not geometric) growth. Something with an "R0 number" of less than 1.0 is a virus that we may be getting able to control soon. The SARS-CoV-2 virus has an "R0 number" somewhere between 2.0 and 3.0. By contrast, measles has an extremely high "R0 number" somewhere between 12.0 and 14.0, but also has a relatively short incubation period. Still this is why measles is such a problem now that a good percentage of the population has started to avoid vaccinations of any kind. Hopefully, we won't hear any of that nonsense when a SARS-CoV-2 vaccination is ready.

Long "incubation periods" for diseases (before symptoms appear) make it much easier for them to spread. When diseases spread quickly they also mutate quickly, making them harder to fight against. The SARS-CoV-2 virus has already mutated twice that we know of. The SARS-CoV-2 virus has a high "R0 number" and the weak responses of certain world leaders (and plenty of others who do not understand the threat) continue to make the situation worse, by acting as if this is not serious or even assuming we can "pack the churches" once again by Easter.

And while it is true that young people may not be as threatened by this virus, it is NOT true that they have nothing to worry about. Some teenagers have been among those that have died in the USA already AND even if you don't die you can have permanent damage to your respiratory system.

Plus, the COVID-19 virus threatens everyone in another way. If we don't start to "flatten the curve" through quarantine and social distancing SOON, it will fill the hospitals. Even if this does not sicken our health-care professionals, this means that soon we will be not be able to have access to the hospitals for any other reasons.

A good historical comparison would be the "Spanish Flu" (also called the "1918 flu pandemic"). It lasted two years and infected about 500 million people, killing somewhere between 17 and 100 million in a time when world travel and global commerce was a tiny percentage of what takes place today.

The above information is taken from the CDC and David Quammen(*)'s book "Animal Infections And The Next Human Pandemic" and wikipedia's Spanish Flu entry.

(*) David is a Yale graduate and former Rhodes Scholar. During autumn 2014, he was much involved, because of books and articles he has published, in the public discussion of the Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa and its spread beyond.

this time, they really took advantage of it. i bet they're rolling in cash right now. and the politicians must love it too, being able to further their scumbag campaigns.

There are opportunists that take advantage of every disaster. What you say certainly makes some sense.

But the threat of COVID-19 is real.

Most my mates around the same age have lost their jobs over this, some of them without any compensation either as they were on zero hours contracts. I'd just started working nightshifts at a nearby supermarket a few months before this reached the UK, so I'm one of the lucky few still in work/unlucky few still needing to travel.

While not anyone I know first-hand, apparently a young kid of a family friend has been hospitalised with the virus now. I also know quite a few people around the area who've developed a bit of a cough like you mentioned Sparrowhawk, so I do wonder whether it could be Covid's milder symptoms. Shame there's no real way to get tested at the moment. Supposedly Amazon is due to start sending out home test kits soon which will be handy.

That is really a terrible comparison. The Spanish flu was especially deadly to healthy people (IIRC, this was because it caused the body's immune system to overreact, so a better immune system -> bigger risk). That isn't the case with the coronavirus at all. It's most dangerous to people with weakened immune systems, similar to the common cold. It does seem to be a more dangerous disease overall, although I don't think we will have reliable numbers until some time after the whole thing dies over.

Skurn, no one's denying that the media loves to over inflate things and spread fear.
On the other hand, there's also no denying that this is a real thing and actually is spreading round the world and killing thousands of people. Take what the media says with a pinch of salt but do listen to the experts.

I remember when SARS was going round, the media treated it like the end of the world but it turned out not that terrible (globally speaking that is, not to trivialise the areas where it did hit). Go ask the hospital staff in Italy, London, Spain etc etc etc if covid-19 is really all that bad.

the "experts" are paid off wackjobs. cdc are a bunch of scum. remember how they handled ebola 10 minutes ago? not at all. they are failures and don't have a clue what they're doing.

also, thousands...look into historical data for 6 seconds and realize how much of a basic thing this is and compare reported numbers to the overall population of places they're from. for example, in new york which is a supposedly super contaminated area, 300 deaths...so, much, MUCH less than 1%. like, several zeroes kinda small. but of course, media is gonna tell you how scary it is and to "STAY IN DOORS, WASH. GET NEAR NO ONE!! PANIC, NOW AND PLEASE CLICK OUR ADS FOR HAND SANITIZER!"

someone'll point to florida and say how bad it is there...in a place primarily populated for old dinks, ducking duh? the numbers are higher.

point is, outbreaks happen. this is no different than any other. take the same precautions you always will, regardless of what time of the year it is. you sick? stay the duck out of work/school. drink water. try to sweat, but don't overdo it. basic, basic things. a cough isn't a sign of the end - its a sign of virtually every sickness. you got the specific strain everyone's screaming about? more than likely, you will have little to no symptoms. child or old? gonna be worse. just. like. it. always. is.

media can duck itself, politicians can duck themselves, idiots panic buying stores out can go duck themselves. just, humanity can go duck itself. awful, failure of a species. absolutely embarrasing.

Not really sure what point you're trying to make Skurn. The idea of these lockdowns is to prevent it from spreading to those vulnerable people you just mentioned. If we have the ability to try and prevent those at fatal risk from catching it why wouldn't we? Not to mention the hospitals are already struggling to cope in many places. Lockdown means less cases means more resources to help those who need it, not just those with Covid but all patients. You almost come across like we should just let nature take its course instead of bothering to look out for each other. Failure of humanity indeed.

@Skurn (and the rest of us):

Yes, the media is having a field day.

And many scientific experts are paid for their expertise. However, I do not think that is reason enough to encourage anyone to ignore all scientific experts who provide information we do not want to hear.

Yes, the number of people dying as a percentage of the overall population is small. But the reason we are trying to get people to "lockdown", quarantine and maintain a social distance of 6 feet (about 2 meters) is that we don't want to overwhelm too many of our hospitals, like what is starting to happen in New York, New York, USA and what has already happened in Northern Italy, Atlanta Georgia, USA and Rome Italy.

As for the comparison to the 1918 Spanish Flu, it is certainly true that medical science has advanced since then. It is also true that most estimates place the global median R0 value for Spanish Flu somewhere around 1.80(*) (though it was thought to be higher in some countries). This, of course, is lower than the range of somewhere between 2.0 and 3.0 that we are seeing for COVID 19. That and the slow incubation period for COVID 19 and it's relatively rapid rate of mutation make it a somewhat unique threat.

And yes, the disease will have the greatest impact on those who are "at risk" based on some medical condition or simply have that "medical condition" known as advanced years. But it has crippled and killed people much younger and heathier by causing permanent & irreparable damage to their respiratory systems.

(*)Twenty-four studies reported 51 R values for the 1918 pandemic. The median R value for 1918 was 1.80. (See https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ for more details.)

I work with a LOT of scientists, and the clear message is that this A.) isn't a ridiculous conspiracy, and B.) has the potential to get much, MUCH worse if not handled properly. I've heard expectations from some of my coworkers that New Zealand's quarantine will last far longer than a few months if they consider the research, and that we might be isolated until a vaccine is produced.

This isn't a good thing for governments. This is going to cripple them too. This is bad for everyone.

As for me, as a kiwi too I'm also in quarantine. Thankfully, I have decent job security, so unless my parent company goes under, I'm still making a decent wage.

Change is constant, but Constants do not change.
Some people here are already panic buying, but the government says there's no reason to do so. As a result, there has been a shortage of face masks, sanitizers, and medicine. Some of them are just too frickin stubborn. There were at least more than a hundred imprisoned for not following community quarantine protocols. Regardless of the negativity, crime rates have decreased by 45% ever since the declaration of community quarantine. I hope that the security will be as consistent even if the community quarantine protocol is over.

Also, I forgot so much about school. I don't even feel like reviewing for the test or even remembering those lessons.

Of course that was more than enough for the virus to spread inside the ship, but later the company tested a bunch of people for the virus and those without the virus were sent back home, me being among them.

I've never been an "outsy" person, so being home all day, for many days, is nothing unusual for me haha
Since I'm returning to some old hobbies, I'm here hoping I can finish a mod for mother's day.

Stay safe y'all.

New Zealand is moving down to Alert Level 3, which means integral workers from a bunch of industries are allowed to go back to work. I'm getting to leave quarantine, but my flatmates and family aren't, and my work will be hampered.

Change is constant, but Constants do not change.
COVID-19 survivors were allowed to donate the antigens in their blood through liquid plasma. It is believed to administer immunization from the virus. There are 3 plus volunteers already.
Are they doing this in your country?

Yes! This is really taking off in the USA. I'm hopeful that it will start making a difference in the numbers (if the idiots in the flyover states stop spreading this disease in mass protest rallies).

"Blood donation centers across the U.S. are ramping up efforts to collect plasma from people who have recovered from COVID-19 in hopes it could be used to save the lives of others infected with the pandemic disease." (from this article ---> Blood centers will collect plasma from COVID-19 survivors in bid for treatment).
