Dink meet 2011 - June 24-26th!
Summer 2010, in all secrecy, five Dinkers from across the globe met in Utrecht, played frisbee, and had pizza. It was awesome.
19th of October 2010, in the Dink Chat, plans were made to do it again, but less secret. And so came to be: The Second International Dink Meet: 2011 edition
Obviously, we haven't thought through a lot of details, but I personally really want this to happen. What we have so far:
Q: Where?
Utrecht, The Netherlands.
Q: Wait, where?.
Utrecht. For a variety of reasons, but in the end, the most important one is that I'm most comfortable hosting a meet there instead of in, say, Amsterdam. Call it the organizer's privilege to host a meet in his own back yard, so to speak
How to get here:
By train: Make your way into The Netherlands using whichever tools you have for that, then you can use http://ns.nl to plan your trip from wherever you're coming in. Use "Utrecht Centraal" as destination.
By plane: You will probably come in at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS for short), from where you can take a train to Utrecht. This train departs every 15 minutes and takes about half an hour. There is an alternative, Eindhoven (EIN), but from that airport to the train station in Utrecht is a bit more involved. This last option is interesting for those flying with budget airlines like Ryanair.
Q: When?
It'll be a 3-day dealy in June, from Friday the 24th to Sunday the 26th. For accommodations, I recommend hostel Strowis.
Q: What?
Still haven't thought of good activities for Saturday evening and Sunday morning/afternoon. I still consider "Randomly go to another city to hang out there" to be a valid option. Then again, I also consider "Remember that park thing yesterday? Let's do that again" to be an option. In my experience, thinking of something on the spot probably works just as well.
Friday:
Afternoon: I expect people to arrive between 12:00 to 13:00. The meet-up place is the hall in the train station. At some point, we'll likely move to a place where it's more comfortable to sit and actually talk/play games.
Evening: Dinner will be had at Pizzeria Santa Lucia at 19:00.
After dinner: To be determined. Might involve a pub or a game shop of some sort.
Saturday:
Morning: Wake up, lazily hang around town.
Lunch: Picnic in the park. What park? Wilhelminapark. It probably includes frisbees.
Afternoon: Still picnic in the park. My experience with picnics in parks is that they have no clearly determined end time.
Alternative plans: We could have a picnic in a completely different park, in a completely different city. There's trains and everything. Or go to a completely different city after having finished up the picnic.
Evening: TBD.
Sunday:
Until further notice, Christiaan's suggestion of Relax at Julianapark sounds good.
Evening: The end of the meet. We'll all cry and say goodbye to each other, and promise to say "hi" when we're back online. Which will then promptly be forgotten after a night's sleep, when you'll wonder if what just happened was real or hallucinated.
Or something.
Q: Who to contact?
Me, magicman. The email address listed on my profile page gets checked several times a day, whenever I'm near the internet. However, during the meet itself, it may be easiest to call me. If you don't have my phone number and plan to come, give me a PM.
Q: Who?
This is where you come in. Below this paragraph are three lists. A list of people who're going. A list of people who are at least seriously considering it, but aren't sure, and a list of people who just can't make it. Reply to this thread to get added.

Sounds like fun, better put me on the nope list.
... Hmm...
When: Later in year rather than sooner for me (25-30 hour flight YAWN)
What: 3 day weekend, expect some touristy time - definately frisby again, umm.. maybe bar be que - definately a night out some dink chat...
then ... and its a resounding hell yes!

Interested but I can't plan more than 3 days in advance so maybe for me
Sounds pretty cool and that place Utrecht sounds quite familiar too... I might be able to come as well if I don't forget about it.
Depends... Might be fun to meet some of you
Hm... Throw me on the maybe list but I doubt I'll get the opportunity. Maybe for the 2012 meet
Now let's see how long it'll take for Seth to come strolling past this thread.
Now let's see how long it'll take for Seth to come strolling past this thread.
Perhaps. It depends if any hot chicks come over. Oh, and some ducks too, they're fun to behead.
Oh, and hello Carrie!
Oh, and hello Carrie!
It's very unlikely that I'll be able to come, but it sounds like good fun. How about FINLAND in 2012? And definetely in the wintertime, too
Here's the deal, it's a great idea and some Dinkers are probably gonna go over there. There's just a few problems:
1) It's quite impossible for anyone to say anything yet, considering there's still plenty of time until June, and to next year alone.
2) It's quite a far away from most Dinkers' homeland, although quite a many Dinkers are from Netherlands.
3) Most Dinkers are underage and I doubt their parents will let them go around the globe just to meet some guys that they know from Internet.
4) Tal.

Put me on my own special list, "Possibly Maybe I dunno Likely" as I am mysterious and could show up at any time.
Put me on the maybe list it depends if i get my drivers license(is way to far for me to use my bicycle.)
merder: This is why trains exist, my friend Though I must admit I have no clue where you live. At all.
Synbi: Finnish meet? If you, or any other Finn for that matter, is willing to organize it, I'm in. Even in winter. Though preferably not this winter.
Skull: I'm aware I won't get the entire DN to come. I don't really expect them to. But if we can get 5 people, some of them not knowing of it until 2 days in advance, it seems like the logical next step to make the invitation public, lots of months in advance (and I'm aware it may already be too late for some of the Southern hemisphere folks who may consider going).
If we end up with 5 people? Awesome. If, through posting it early on the forum, we get more? Even better. There are many people I'd like to meet, and I'm sure that's mutual.
There are people here who are here just to play Dink and D-Mods. This meet is probably not for them. There are also people here who have made friends they've known for longer than some of their real-life friends. This meet is for them.
To be honest, the people I expect to come either live nearby, or are college-aged people who're in a crazy mood and think it'd be fun to meet other Dinkers. So what if that's not a large part of the community, there are still more than 5 of them. This plan cannot fail.

Except if you can't get 5 people in there.
why that exact location?
I think we should go and meet Seth.
I think we should go and meet Seth.
Yay! There's a one out of 500 chance for me to meet magicman and MsDink!
MsDink was one of the 5 that met earlier this year - Geesh if I can make it why would you not get another 5 people there this time!!
Wonder, upon aging 18, is one legally permitted to travel 2500 kilometers round the globe, possibly against their parents' wishes?
OOh, It just so happens that I'm GOING to England next year, so I might take a ferry or something. Put me in "HELLS YEAH"
EDIT: 14th of August next year. Plan it for that day!!

Aw, I'm sorry man. I have my own vacation plans for August
Damm, maybe I can get something arranged for your date then...Until then, keep me on the middle list.
Hi!! I check the forum once in a while but I don't usually post
cuz I got nothing to say. I wish I could go to the Netherlands.
That would be so cool. But I don't even have a passport.
Or the money to go. *pout* But I expect, nay, I demand
that the people who do go, take lots and lots of pics and
share them!

For being "International", a virtually unheard of location like Utrecht seems a bit wrong. I believe most Dinkers are from the US anyways, shouldn't an international meet take place there? Not that it matters, I can't come regardless, heh.
I believe most Dinkers are in fact from either Netherlands or Australia. I'm not sure though, but that's what it would seem by looking at this forum.
Are you sure Skull? There are actually very few aussie Dinkers who still use the forum.
I agree Netherlands are the most prolific dinker breeders on the planet
Active user wise, I would agree that the Netherlands have the highest Dinker population at present, followed by one of the other European countries. Probably Finland or Switz I think.
Australia and New Zealand are further down the bottom of the list, but NZ tops Aus by one person on the active list *high-fives Zeddexx*

The Dutch are just everywhere I'm currently in Australia and I still meet Dutch people randomly on the train.
I will definitely be there. So will Joyce. And magicman and I can probably persuade metatarasal to join.
Tally-ho!
Tally-ho!
i dont think im going anywhere near the netherlands anytime soon....nope list for me
As I already said in the chat I fall into the 'maybe, it depends' category. And it mainly depends on whether or not I'll actually be in the country at that time. My summer holiday will likely take the better part of July though I have no definitive dates yet...
Oh, and the link to the railway site isn't working (ns.nl/en gives me a 404). http://ns.nl/cs/Satellite/travellers will get you to the right site.

Put me on the maybe list please.
EDIT: I see you mentioned it will be held in June or July. I will have more chance of being able to come if it is held in July, and even more chance if it is held in August.

HELLS YEAH I'm comming! I just can't afford to miss this, especially when it's this close to home. I can't wait to finally meet some dinkers in person
Would love to go but the distance is a problem. Next one in Hiroshima!
Seth: Only if you're paying for every dinker to get there
Would actually love to take a trip to Japan some day, actually. 'tis one of the countries I have listed for specific targe- I mean, travel destinations

I would love to go but too long and I'm too young to go alone. Anyways you guys gotta be one hell of a Dinker to have enough spare time to go.
Next one in Pakistan! It will be a blast! The terrorists can see to that.
It's pretty unsafe here. I might be blasted before I press the submit butto - BOOM!

Nope, can't go. Would love to though..
Put me on the maybe list. Depending on when exactly it is goint to be I'll be there.
dangit! My sixteenth birthday is in July, so it is unlikely I will have enough money, spare time (school and stuff) or even if my parents would let me travel halfway across the world to a country where I don't even know what language they speak. Would love to go though. Maybe in a few years time?
Put me in the HELLS YES list nao.
I am intrigued by this idea and wish to subscribe to your newsletter. There a few people I'd love to meet so I can kick them in the junk.
Eh, put me down down for a maybe.
Also, Japan would be awesome... and oddly a tad bit closer for me.

I mean... oh wow, that was just... bad.
I mean... oh wow, that was just... bad.
Sparrow can come - just not keen on the camera word he mentioned heh
Cool. Really though, I'm seriously considering this, since I have yet to go outside the continent, and this would be an awesome excuse to do it. It just depends on my work situation and if I can afford it.
Magicman, have you said anything to Dan? He's been getting less hermity lately (I think) and I'm sure everyone would love to have him there.

Striker's possibly coming?! Count me out!
Ahh thought it was pics of "the junk" you wanted ha! (MsDink is camera shy as well)
ps next one is in the Pacific not Japan

How about on top of Ayers Rock?
Oh YEAH, finally somebody's doing this
I may be able to make it, if it's not late July.. preferably June. We're hosting a physics education conference in our university August 1.-5., so it's bound to be crazy busy for most of July.
Why don't you guys/magicman make a facebook event out of it? Would be easier to track people if they could change their yes/no/maybe statuses themselves?

I'll make a facebook event of this once I have an actual date. Right now I wish it'd let me make an event with an attached date-poll as a way to keep track of how many people will show up when.
The way it's looking now, I'll be doing this on either the last weekend of June (24-26), or the penultimate weekend of July (22-24). I'll update the first post to reflect this.

hmmm maybe if i could crash at your house while its on il come plz answer
Make a poll at http://doodle.com/ ?
I'll be doing my best to come there, so I'd rather be on the hells yea list. With preference to June schedules

Sorry, but I'm quite hesitant with letting people I hardly know stay at my place. I'll post a link to a hostel when plans are more concrete.
Drop me down to the confirmed as Nope, I've just been scheduled for other commitments of importance. I would say conference, but alcoholic beverages have been highly confirmed for it Sorry all
another idea is we could all meet in a really big boat in the middle of the atlantic....
Depends if I can get time and money off work... I'd love to.
Bump to make sure it gets a fancy "new" image next to it. Now with dates and facebook event!
*cries* not much good for those of us that don't have or aren't a member of facebook so can't log on to see the dates - wanna share the info on the dink thread here as well please magic?
June 24-26 sounds good, also, like MsDink said might be a good idea to post here in this topic any additional information that would otherwise be denied to us facebook contrarians. I might be able to make it, so put me on the maybe, it depends section just for fun
Sorry for being unclear. The first post in this thread is, and will always be, the first place where new information gets added. When I modify it, I'll give the thread a bump with a summary of the changes, and to make sure a "new" icon appears, since modifying the first post doesn't do that (which is a good thing). If there is an inconsistency between the information on the Facebook page, and the information in the first post, it can be because:
a) I've only *just* edited the first post, and am working on the Facebook page.
b) I completely forgot about the Facebook page
c) It's attendance data, of which the most accurate information is probably a combination of the two. I'll try to keep this page updated based on Facebook attendance, but I can't promise any consistency in those updates.
I only added the Facebook page because of Sharp's suggestion, which I thought was a good one.
For the Facebookians: I'll try my very best to keep the Facebook-page updated as well. However, I am a forgetful guy.
That said, you're in, then?
EDIT: Oh, hey, I see you want to be in the "Depends" section. Will do!

This would be awesome to go to, but I don't think I could make it. Sigh...
Ah, it seems there is a date now;
The date couldn't have been chosen worse (except when you plan it during the week instead of the weekend); my mother's birthday is 24/06; I doubt she will celebrate it, but if she does, she does in the following weekend Friday seems to be a busy day according to the school/univ-schedule and the week after this weekend there are some re-examinations... If I come it will probably only 1 or 2 days in the weekend, depending on how well I do at the univ and if my mother wants to celebrate her birthday

Funny, I always though your name was Goodey.
I'm playing the "yes" card
Oh ... my ....gosh. Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh! All the old dinkers came back in this thread (magicman, racist,Sharp, Seth etc.) whic means they're still lurking around. YAY! Why don't you guys come back?
SHHhhhhhh dont mention *magicman*, he isnt real DD hes an urban legend here... kind of like a mystical being that pops up in the mist sometimes and then disapears in a puff of pizzamist and sleeps again...
Changes of circumstance. Fold.
All the old dinkers came back in this thread (magicman, racist,Sharp, Seth etc.)
Racist is an old dinker? No offense, I just thought he joined in late '10.

Aww, so many people are folding - but that just means there's more space for new faces
I just realized Ryanair is STILL not flying direct from Finland to Netherlands. Well, flying via London is still cheaper than a direct flight but it kinda makes it take a lot longer. Uff.

Bump.
Most important changes: Fleshed out the schedule. Basically: Friday is pizza day, the best day of the week. Saturday is when a picnic happens. Other than that, it's pretty much still open.
Additionally, a section on how to contact me is added. Send me a PM if you plan to come and don't already have my phone number.

sorry don't think i can make it(due to most likely not having train money and really doubting i'll get a drivers license on time ) maybe next time though(when hopefully closer to my hometown(Helmond))
edit: to make it more clear after groceries and the usual costs i don't have much left for the trip and since i have to get 2 seperate ticket's and have to find a place to sleep 2 days i don't think what i have left is enough

Oo, more plans!
I probably will be spending one day only in Utrecht, not sure if it's going to be Friday or Saturday. (Reason: traveling with my non-Dink significant other, so it might be slightly odd to dump him at 'Dam for days while partying out in Utrecht with you guys )
I tried to check the web for "what can you do in Utrecht". There seems to be a cool castle called "Oudaen" somewhere in there?
And I found out you have a Dick Bruna's Miffy square. I _must_ have my photo taken with the gigantic Miffy, so I hope it's somewhere near what you're planning

I'll try to make it on saturday though.

I'll probably be coming to the meeting. I'll be arriving on friday afternoon/evening (I have to work in daytime), and I'll leave on sunday, not too late. I'll be hitch-hiking from and to Groningen, and want to get home before dark.
Sharp: Ryanair doesn't fly on the Netherlands because of the taxes. You should probably go to Weeze, near Duesseldorf, Germany, and take the train (or hitch-hike) from there. Most Dutch people go there, so hitch-hiking really is a quite secure option. Just make sure you're one of the first to leave the airport, and stand at the parking exit with a sign saying "Utrecht".

I will have to withdraw my "hell yes" and make it a drat, double dog nab it - nope. I am still going but it will now be later in the year or early next year instead.
I planned six weeks away which included the Dink meet, but with just starting a new job 4 weeks ago, I just feel that for me, at this time, I need to stay and settle in and learn what I need to rather than heading to the other side of the world *sigh*
I am really sorry to be missing you all as I was so looking forward to meeting more of you. I do however urge anyone that is on the verge of going - to make the effort! Having met the 'Utrecht crew' last year, I highly recommend their company - a really awesome group of people and you should have a blast.
All the best to those that go - have a slice of pizza for me (just dont let magicman choose it) hehe

I was wondering where everyone slept during the meet in 2010. (Don't know who to ask this really since I don't know who went to the meet at that time.) Did everyone stay at some random location of their own or did you stick together in a group?
I'm thinking of staying at hostel Strowis like was recommended but I'm wondering if I can expect to see anyone else there. So what's everyone planning?

I stayed in a campervan heh was touring Europe and Scotland at the time
I'll most likely be able to come. However, at the last second, it really depends on one person, and her plans.
Currently, I'm coming there, but if I don't show up even though saying I will, I most likely just ran into an obstacle at the last second, and had no time to say it here, which would really suck.

Just email magicman about it (or ask for his phone number), if magicman knows he can share it.
Right. I meant to get around to getting my phone number to everyone. I'll get around to that. Someday. I mean, right now. Yes.
Erwin: I don't know of anyone else's overnight plans, sorry. Christiaan and I live in Utrecht, and apart from us, I think only shevek (and Skull, hopefully, if he shows up) will be around for more than one day.

If I will be able to make it, it will probably be a 1-day trip only, cause it's the Finnish midsummer party on the 25th, which I'll spend with some friends. So I can either be there for the 24th or the 26th. Hmmm... I can see the chances of me getting there are narrowing. Hopefully I'll be able to make it.
Hmmm... Too bad. As I'm only going to around on the 25th...
I'll probably not be able to make it on the 24th. The 24th is my deadline for my Master Thesis, so I expect to be working on it till late at night. If I'm done any sooner I'll party with you guys.
If we get bored on sunday we could drop by Relax at Julianapark, it's a free festival with lots of music. Or we could get drunk.
I have to go because I was so uninportant that they didn't even put m'e in the not coming list so i started packing my bags. And maybe I could teach those who don't know already to take 100 shots of margarita if you europeoninieseiens even know what that is I'm erish I live in Ireland not Europe we speack irianiease here now please let the booze flow like the fountains of Dublin. I mrgantoe officially clame the dink meet to be a celebration of booze. I suppose ur paying for the booze right christaan.

Erwin: I arranged to stay with someone I don't know through couchsurfing.org. I've done that several times, and it's always fun. It does mean I might want to spend some time with my host as well, if he likes that; he's not just a free hotel, he also likes to meet me.
As for the boooooooze, I hope I don't disappoint you when I say I don't drink any alcohol. But even if I do disappoint you, I'm going to say it anyway: I don't drink any alcohol.

I don't drink either. The world is ducked up enough as it is.

Right. I meant to get around to getting my phone number to everyone. I'll get around to that. Someday. I mean, right now. Yes.
It would be good to have your number, it makes meeting easier. When looking for me, I'll be wearing a Debian t-shirt (it has a big swirl and the word "Debian" on it). But please send me e-mail with your phone number as well, just to be sure. My address is wijnen@debian.org. If you can arrange to get that linked to the account named "shevek" so I can finally log in, I'd be very happy, too.

You know when I said that I'd get around to it? Yes, an email-in-progress has been open since then. Thanks for poking me >_<
Anyway, I've sent an email with contact details to people who're planning to show up. If I've forgotten anyone (probably, because I fail at these things), please send an email to the address listed on my profile. The gmail one.
While at it, also mention if you're planning to join us for pizza on Friday, so I can tell the restaurant in time. I'm aiming for dinner at 19:00.

To confirm: I definitely can't make it on friday during the day, perhaps friday after dinner, but it depends on how fast I finish my thesis.
I'll be there saturday during the day, but probably won't be joining for dinner, as I'm going to celebrate/moarn being done with college forever by getting wasted at home with Joycielanie and even wastederer at some random club that night. Anyone willing to join is welcome, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Sunday Joycielanie and me will be joining you guys with terrible headaches all day.
ALSO: scratcher, you should come. Seriously. Get your ass over here.

I've got my flights figured out, so I'll be there for Saturday and possibly for some part of Sunday (depends).
Cool to see all of you guys then!
I am under the impression that scratcher is at least seriously considering coming, but that's all I know. Hope he does come. Can't have too many Finns there.

scratcher was one of the people who was in IRC when we planned this back in October and he seemed really enthousiastic about it. We've been talking about it about two weeks ago, when he was still considering it, but I haven't heard anything of him since.
I do agree we need him around. And I guess MadStalker just sucks at timing
Btw, how about our resident Belgian? Kyle, 'sup man?

I already notified magicman, but will post it here anyways. I will be at the meet Saturday and hopefully Sunday as well. I can't be there on Friday, but I hope you guys have a lot of fun then

Any back-up plans for the picnic in case it rains all day?

I don't want to miss a thing

Sorry dudelings, I must pass. I was seriously intending, but it's something I could barely afford, and really shouldn't. With deep shame I must undersign to being a rational and boring Dinker.
But I do want to see pictures of magicman with his party shirt.

Hah, the way things are looking, is that it'll be just you and me on Friday until the evening.
As for backup-plans when it rains... I have been looking for alternatives, but failed to find something that's really appealing. Worst case scenario right now is we sit in bars all day, though we'd still need something resembling lunch...
Someone better bring a camera, now that pictures are actually being requested >_>

Scratcher - aww... no can do, I guess
OK, I'll see the rest of you on Saturday. Will give you a call and try and get to wherever you are sheltering from the rain!

Netherlands train travel page
Work on the track
Weesp-Schiphol
Saturday 25 and Sunday, June 26
travel advice
Use the bus:
Weesp and Schiphol travel between the NS-bus
no driving between Schiphol and Amersfoort Intercity
between Schiphol Airport and Lelystad Centrum drive no Intercity
between Schiphol and Utrecht Centraal Intercity no driving
extra travel time
fifteen minutes to half hour
...Google translator might mess things up, but is that travel advice actually saying "there's no driving to Utrecht"? Does this site mean the trains will go, but it takes more time, OR that we should take the bus which takes more time, OR that there is no way to get there
Bah, I guess someone at the station will be able to tell us what to do.

Right. I see it has given you that page, but this page seems more appropriate: Schiphol - Utrecht Centraal (as opposed to Weesp - Schiphol). According to that page, travelers between Schiphol and Utrecht go (by train) through Amsterdam Centraal, which adds 15-30 minutes. Total train time is then about an hour.
The "not driving" statements refer to the "intercity" which is a type of train.
And indeed, when in doubt, there's people at Schiphol, Amsterdam Centraal, *and* Utrecht Centraal who know what to do.

Come on, it's Netherlands. You can always walk.
Upon closer inspection, I'm probably not able to come there after all. As I said, I'd have to come there on the 24th and leave the same evening. 26th would be stupid, cause all I get to do is watch you guys cry. I'm also having financial problems, as always, so unless I'm able to sneak into the cargo hold, or find some money laying around the street, I can't afford a flight, most likely. Finally, I'm gonna go to my grandparents' and my parents-in-law place with my girlfriend, on the 25th, but we haven't decided yet if we'll go to the other place on the 24th already. So, currently, I'm leaning more to the no -option, but who knows, faith may surprise.
I'm pretty sure people are more relieved than sad if I'm not able to make it.
EDIT: And yes, pictures, lots of pictures!

Not yet Erwin in about 1:30 hours.
This is also where I mention that I won't be able to look at my email or at the forum (or at IRC) for the rest of today. Will report back in the evening/at night.

Sorry, just can't afford a plane ticket to the Netherlands. I'd love to meet fellow dinkers, though. Perhaps we can organise another north American dinkermeet for the rest of us sometime?
I'm already wondering if what just happened was real or a hallucination.
Oh, right. Today's plans. Looks like today is going to be a series of Schrödinger showers. You have to observe again and again if it's raining or not. That said, a picnic is probably not a good idea. Tomorrow will be lovely weather, so we'll do it then at the world festival thingy.
Alternative plans involve me actually bringing a couple of games this time, so we'd have something to do while getting a conversation going. As for where to go, and where to actually have lunch, I honestly haven't the foggiest. I do apologize for the chaotic nature of this meet thus far
With that in mind, Erwin, shevek, Sumurai8, and I will be at the station at 13:00.

Sooo... uhm... just wondering what time we will meet tomorrow (sunday). I can't recall that any of us did say anything about a time we will meet
I still like the idea of 13:00 at the central station, people who arrive later can call.
Sounds like a plan; we still need a plan how to teleport MsDink to the meet...
*sigh* you dont know how close I am to just booking a ticket and being there next weekend hehe but then no point huh - you will all be gone

Hope everyone survived!
I did, but only barely.
Hitch-hiking back didn't go as smooth as I hoped. I was at the highway at 18:00 (but it wasn't the place where I wanted to be, I later found out; that cost me about 30 minutes, I think). Until Beilen at 21:30 things were a bit slow, but ok. However, I left Beilen at 23:00, which was a long wait... Eventually I got home around midnight. But it was a nice trip.
