American Beauty

Wow. What a great movie. I just saw it yesterday. Fight Club was once my undisputed favorite movie, but American Beauty is just...beautiful. A few friends and I were bored after a day of nothing, so we decided to rent a movie. None of us had seen American Beauty, but we all heard really good reviews of it. So we went to Blockbuster to pick it up, and we went to my house to pop it in. After the first 10, no 5, minutes, I was hooked. After we finished the movie, we remained silent for 10 minutes. I smiled for the rest of that day, and let somebody fall asleep in my arms later that night. Which by the way, are very rare occurances.

Discuss movies that are just plain awesome, how they affected you, and how reacted to them when you first saw them.

Fight Club rocks. I reacted by buying the DVD, which is now out-of-print.

American Beauty... meh.

*shrugs* My reaction to it was just 'meh'. My blind eyes didn't see anything 'beautiful' about it, as your eyes did.

The Usual Suspects, also with Kevin Spacey. A twisted story revealed fully at the end...sort of like life. I liked Gladiator...good story and lots of gore and glory. The best, perhaps, could be Citizen Cain, awesome movie, again with everything revealed at the end...if you haven't seen it, get it. The Godfather 1 and 2, I like mob stories.

Oh, one more, maybe the best film ever in my opinion, also with a young Marlon Brando, On the Waterfront. A promising boxer gets lured into the underground world of the mob and dirty dealings...by his own brother. Only when its too late does he realise what he has thrown away, and that moment is one of the best moments ever on film. He eventually defeats his inner demons and turns the table on the mob and saves the city in doing so. A bit controversial, it sort of echos the troubles the director had in his personal life, being called a communist, and blacklisted. The movie really makes you think...every decision we make influences our lives...one bad road leads to many more.

I'm with redink on the Fight Club thing. I bought the VHS, because I didn't have a DVD player at the time... and the poster, which has earned a place of honor next to my No One Lives Forever 2 poster, the Gorillaz in the Geep one, and my Simpsons cast poster. Ah, beautiful poster wall.
Anyways. Fight Club is my favorite movie of all time. No question about it.

Cube is a lot better than the crap that was Cube 2. At least with Cube, there was the feeling that it *could* have happened, and it had a worthwhile ending. Cube 2 was just utter crap.

I totaly related to American beauty. It had some depth to it that I look for in a movie.
And check out Blade Runner. Its older, yet timeless. It started the cyber-punk genre. That's my pick.

It's funny, and has a nice twist at the end, and you pick up on something new every time you watch it. It's also pretty cool in the explosions department, and it has a PLOT. Oh my GOD! A movie with a PLOT!

In both Cube and Cube 2: Hypercube, a group of people wake up in a room the shape of a cube. There are 9 exits through funky doors. However, each of the 9 exits leads to another, (mostly) identical cube. And some of the cubes have traps. The people have no idea how they got there, and they try to find a way out. The people from each are completely different.

Point Break.
Though there are quite a few I think are real cool, Point Break is awesome. The end and the decision he makes, is so unreal - and yet you can understand it: and that's awesome yet scary at the same time.

Lesson in Verb Tense (For Flatline and whoever else says "0wNz")
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The verb "to own" is transitive, meaning it requires a direct object in order that one may use it properly in a sentence. For example:

Connor owns more fishnet stockings and high-heeled shoes than a hooker.

I have italicized the direct object of the verb "own." "Fishnet stockings and high-heeled shoes" is the direct object of the verb.

Because "to own" is a transitive verb, one cannot use it as an INtransitive verb. An intransitive verb is one such as "snows". Example: It snows. "Snows" does not require a direct object to be a proper operative verb. "Owns" does.

Even funky NOT l337, might I add, misspellings of "owns."

Be nice to your verbs, kiddies, without them you do nothing.

(Yes, I realize no one read this.)

Lola Rennt more of an art film than anything?
But it had guns and stuff! I thought it was more like Germany's answer to Pulp Fiction.

But in Flatline's use of '0wNz', he was treating it as an adjective, not a verb. The slang use of the term has evolved past its origins as a verb.

It would mean the same as 'Run Lola Run rocks!' or 'Run Lola Run is cool!'. And yes, I know that 'rocks' is a plural noun, but I didn't use it in that manner.

I think that "0wNz" was said like some coool slang like "yo I ownz y'u

and run lola run and pulp fiction are awesome!

I read it Alli, it amused me especialy your example. except that i haven't bought the stockings or the heels yet. Don't worry tho, when i do buy them, you'll know about it.
Also, Redink, i've tried to explain that concept to alli already, she won't except it as a reasonable explanation for the use of that term.

Oi. Flagrant abuse of the English language.
and yeah, I accept "rocks" and "sucks" and such... I draw the line at "owns." Rocks at least makes sense... you can associate it with rock and roll and such. Sucks makes sense... you can associate it with... stuff... but owns makes no logical sense. It owns what?
Rargh. Ignore me. I'm just weird.
April 23rd 2003, 04:10 PM
peasantmp.gif
Rock and roll, I believe, came from the verbs to rock and to roll. Thus, by your logic, saying something rocks in reference to it as something cool is like using owns. Rocks what?
I think owns just comes from people saying rules, getting tired of it, and thinking of something slightly different to say. But hm. I've probably missed something so I'll shut up now.
April 23rd 2003, 06:16 PM
fairy.gif
Yeah. I know it's just like that, I'm saying that it's ok because you associate "to rock and roll" with cool things, right? So it's ok to say something rocks, because there's an association there. It makes sense.
However, "to own" is not associated with anything cool. Eh. I probably don't make sense.

But if you own something, doesn't that imply it was worth owning, and hence cool?
April 23rd 2003, 06:57 PM
peasantmp.gif
Hm. We're just thinking differently, probably. But I see where you're coming from. I related owning something to dominating it. So, in a sense, when I hear "Owned" I interpret it kind of like "You've been dominated by me." Ehmm. But yeah. Or no. Sorry if this is confusing. :T

Rey, you have confoosed me
Cube is a Canadian Movie, where is has the same old standard * put a bunch of different people in a contained enviroment and watch them go crazy*, and as usual only one survives. Hey, it reminded me of a Friday the 13th movie, except less gore, and no nudity (Jason being the contained "enviroment")

Not neccessarily... I mean, isn't it also possible to own something you don't like? Like a cat. If I have a cat I really hate, I still own the cat, but it doesn't make it worth owning or cool.

just because there weren't commas in the original title doesn't mean there shouldn't be. The germans really screwed that up.

Einen Kater kuriert man am besten, wenn man mit dem anfängt, womit man aufgehört hat.

Translating that will take plenty of time.(unless you're german)
