Windows 7 and Dink Smallwood
I've recently changed my OS to Windows 7 (don't complain over this because I'm too tired to care anyway) and I've got a little problem now. After I had installed Dink Smallwood I downloaded some D-Mods as usual to the DS folder and used the DFArc2 to install them. However, the installed D-Mods folders aren't visible in the main folder... Neither is the D-Mod package file. When I click on "Open and install a D-Mod" I've noticed there's a little lock on the icons. I presume that the folders and files are somehow blocked out or hidden somehow. Anyone now the solution to this?
A lot of people are having problems with Dink and Vista.
Try looking for the dmod files in these folders:
C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Virtual Store\Program Files\Dink Smallwood\
C:\Users\Default\Owner\Virtual Store\Program Files\Dink Smallwood\
Try looking for the dmod files in these folders:
C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Virtual Store\Program Files\Dink Smallwood\
C:\Users\Default\Owner\Virtual Store\Program Files\Dink Smallwood\
It's funny, cause I've heard all these problems with Dink not working on Vista, and it has always worked fine to me.
C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Virtual Store\Program Files\Dink Smallwood\
C:\Users\Default\Owner\Virtual Store\Program Files\Dink Smallwood\
Didn't work.
C:\Users\Default\Owner\Virtual Store\Program Files\Dink Smallwood\
Didn't work.
I'm having similar problems with Vista.
Hmph.
Hmph.
Not really... Not everyone can be expected to run into the same problem, or any problem at all.
The disappearing folder problem isn't even a Dink problem, just a general Vista problem.
Marpro: Have you checked the "show hidden files and folders" box in folder options? Some of those folders are hidden, so you can't get to them by default.

In DFArc; go into the options and select "Override the Dink Smallwood directory" and select your Dink Smallwood directory there. After that it should work fine.
EDIT:
Well, doing this means that you will have to install the D-Mods again to have them displayed in DRArc or in your Program Files/Dink Smallwood directory. So I suggest a clean install and do this

Yes, I have.

Tried that also - still no available folders.
They don't even appear when I search for them, but I'm able to play the D-Mods. Very strange.

Try this: Open DFArc > Click edit > Browse selected D-Mod directory. This should tell you that do the folders even exists. They should, since you're able to play the D-Mods.
After you overrided the Dink Smallwood directory you have to reinstall the D-Mods, obviously.

It was when I did that I noticed this error.
Anyway when I click on the "Browse selected D-Mod directory" it says:
" C:\Program Files\Dink Smallwood\FoT refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location "

but . . . but . . . ARRGH!!

The lock (icon) means you have not allowed the file to be shared - change the sharing options. Win 7 is AWESOME
Edit: right click - share with - choose
And Win 7 saves files in - c:\program files (x86) not C:\ program files as before.
Is this useful?

MsDink, C\Program Files (x86) is only used for Win32 applications, such as Dink. Other Win64 applications would install in <b?C:\Program Files[/b] if you have a 64 bit version of Windows (Is there a 32 bit version of Win. 7? Or did they just ditch it and go with 64 bit?)
Everything I have ever installed on the win 7 computer installs by default into there fireball.. I assumed all machines were the same
my apologies if I am mistaken

Let's all just say microsoft can suck on Dink's balls until they fix it for us

This will sound very odd. I'll try to explain as good as I can. I did as you suggested and I can now SEE THE FOLDERS and ACCESS them when I choose the option "Open to install a D-Mod" from the DFArc2. When I enter the main Dink Smallwood folder, the D-Mod folders are still invisible... Why aren't the D-Mod folders there?

I would assume that a 32 bit version and a 64 bit version might operate differently in respect to the location that programs are installed, but I'm not sure wether there is a 32 bit version of Win. 7 and quite frankly I'm too lazy to look it up. (Yet not lazy enough to not research internet um... "sub culture"...)
Edited - ok the problem is a control issue - i installed dink on work comp to see what happened (shhhh) hehe and if i change the attributes in the control to all the downloaded dmod shows up in the list in the dink smallwood folder...
will upload how I did it...
I may have gone about this the slow way but I can now see the sub folders... how I did it in 3 steps LOL
1. from inside the dink smallwood folder
I did this
2. then did this 2nd (from the dink smallwood folder (not inside the folder...)
3. Then I can see the additional dmod folders and all u have to do is share it as as follows
hope that helps

That worked like a charm, MsDink.
Thanks everyone for the assistance.

So here's some holy topic redemption.
In short I got 3 pc's to choose from, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP. The windows 7 and Vista pc's are my primary ones which I prefer to use for stuff.
I appear to have a problem with colors on Vista/windows 7 and flashing stuff in full screen for Dink itself, which I can luckily fix by running windowed. However, Dinkedit is a bit of a different story. I can run it fullscreen with truecolor, but the Sprites still have wrong colors (even with that dinkpal flag thingy) so I try windowed... And the sprites have weird color and weird sizes...
Anyone familiar with possible causes? I have tried to get it to run in Windows XP mode, but I get weird errors trying to do so despite having copied it to the virtual machine. I am fairly certain I have developed parts of DWTD on the old XP machine I have, only due to practicality I have it in the guest sleeping room with no internet connection, which is not an ideal dev location to make an understatement hauling it over to the living is also not really an idea I cherish.
Having read some of the replies here, apparently it should be able to run properly, since the only problem that seems to arise here is security/permission related.
Thanks in advance for any help attempts

I do get a message saying the Windows color scheme is changed when I run WinDinkEdit for example, but the sprites and everything show up fine. Having said that, I never use the regular DinkEdit anymore so I don't know if that has problems on Windows 7.
Everyone should run the game windowed in my opinion, it's just much much nicer looking that way But for the die hard 640*480 full screen people, flashing would be annoying. Of course, if it's just your PC, it doesn't really matter as much, since your audience can still enjoy it right?

Well its more that I'd like to see the color of stuff I put in the game before I see the result having to play to that point
I used to have problems running Dink fullscreen on Win 7 so I changed the compatibility settings and now it works fine. Took some fine tuning for me though.
Yeah I just went through that myself for the past hour, some compatibility stuff combined with turning off my tv as a second screen and in the end it seemed the most effective measure was ticking run in 256 colors. Problem sorta solved; Dink itself runs fine, but the editor still has some weird red overlay around some edges of sprites... Well at least its workable now thanks for the advise
You could always run Dink in true color mode. It takes care of most problems on Windows 7.
It does take care of the color problem for the game itself, but also causes flashing of certain parts of sprites and texts. Although I am not epileptic, that is not exactly comfortable
