My youngest sister has been keenly interested in the franchise for several years now, and with her recent acquisition of Pokemon Pearl, I half-jokingly let her and Mom know that, hey, I wanted to catch 'em all too, and be the very best, and so on and so forth. To my surprise, Momlady picked up the opposite version, Pokemon Diamond, for me within a few days. I played for maybe an hour in late April and let it drop off the radar for several weeks, then I picked it up again a day or two ago, and... wow... even as simplistic as the battle system is, I'm oddly compelled to continue playing. I like it.

Anyone else got any stories about their pokey-mans?

Only that I don't have it.

Hey, hey, well, it's glad to see another person that likes the games as much as I do. I'm not completely addicted, but I do play quite a bit. I have emulators for my PC. I can't be bothered to buy a DS or a GameBoy.

Emulators?

The emulators recreate the GameBoy, DS etc. system on your PC. You download these things called roms from the net. You just extract the roms to your PC then open them in the emulators. Now get back on topic. And Tal, don't make any remarks about me saying that!

How do you get the emulators?

... Pokemon in many ways was sort of the prototype for a huge number of video game-card game-tv show megafranchises, so it is interesting that it has basically outlasted all newer ones such as Yu-Gi-Oh and Beyblade...

Hehe, well my family used to travel by car through the country when I was younger. I played Pokémaaan RED GameBoy version then. It was really entertaining. I haven't done anything with pokemons since.

I thought Digimon existed before Pokemon and the pokes just made it outside Japan first? Not sure, though.

First played Arik's Pokemon Blue when it came out, found it most intriguing. I later received Pokemon Silver for for my birthday, and fell in love with the game. Recently started playing Ruby for a bit of nostalgia and my love was rekindled. A seemingly simple, yet pretty complex RPG, with cute fluffy things called Wigglytuff? Oh, yes!

I've got Pearl on pre-order (not out in the UK yet). Ashamed? Yes. Excited? Without doubt. Mostly because of the wireless possibilities, and battling people around the globe. Lovely stuff.

General note to people: Please DO NOT post links to emulators or other sites that distribute stuff of a questionable legal nature. We don't want to be held liable.

I used to play red&blue, when it first came out on my hulk of a game boy. Got into if, but then someone deleted all my banked pokemon as a prank, and I didn't bother restarting. What cards I had, I sold for 10x their price (Also sold my future ownership of any and all cards that fell into my possession). Sold the games, made a nice tidy profit, and I think I either found rougelikes or Dink around that time.

Now that I have shown you my Pokeymans, I can get serious.

I actually bought Red before most people had even heard of the game. Years later, I decided to get Gold. I liked them both... though, I couldn't really get back into Red after all the nice features that were added to Gold. Unlike Red, I never did everything there was to do in Gold, though I at least beat the Elite 4 and managed to create a powerful, well-rounded team after I captured Raiku.

I played through Red, Gold and Sapphire but never fully completed any (by catching 'em all). I haven't played any for some time though, I don't even know where they are.
I found a load of old Pokemon cards in a drawer and sold them on eBay for a tenner

I have played some versions of pokemon, and after going to gamefaqs to see some movesets for "competitive" playing, I now play it on netbattle, but I suck at it lol.

When i was youing i completed Pokemon Silver.Yup i completed the game.But now i don't play anymore.Cause i will try to complete Digimon World 4.God that game is very hard but it rox!

The Pokémon series are good, but anything higher than red/blue/yellow just tends to be exactly like the previous game, only with a different "professor", "towns", more Pokémon and some extra features. Also, catching them all has become quite impossible, seeing as there are like 20 exclusive Pokémon by now (and there are freaking a LOT of Pokémon).

I find myself returning to Yellow and Gold more than Emerald. Won't buy Diamond or Pearl since I don't have a DS and I'm not considering buying one, yet.

Btw, one more original Pokémon game is Mystery Dungeon. The story is a bit cheesy (human changes into Pokémon, enters a Pokémon-only world and finds out he has to save the world), but it's pretty enjoyable. Also, all (well, 386) Pokémon feature in just one game.

Digimon? As far as I know from the first series, it was "humans go to some digital world and meet some creates whom they befriend". Then again, I stopped watching when they stopped broadcasting the series in chronological order. <_<

I haven't played the games btw, but I'm very sure they are not ROM hacks.

Hey, why don't you get a DS emulator and then find a Diamond or Pearl ROM.

Stop suggesting emulators. I have one, but DS emulators are slow and I don't really like the new one for above reason anyway. The same idea tends to get boring after 9 games.

Pirated ROM hacks. There is no real Diamond for GBC, and "Jade" is not even an official Pokémon game.

I played Red back when it was released. I also went to a tournament for it once (that was broadcasted even, lol) but only ended 4th. I didn't play any of the games after that though, because my interest for it mainly came from the anime that I stopped watching after the initial saga was completed.

Also, Digimon came before Pokémon, it's just not as popular.

Actually... I believe Pokemon was created before Digimon, but that Digimon arrived in the West before Pokemon.

Quick Wikipedia peekin' reveals:

What about mangas like V-Tamer & C'mon Digimon?Both of them was released in 1997.The first anime of Digimon was a remix of V-Tamer.

Because we strayed off-topic a bit, and everyone seems to be enjoying the conversation anyway. You can always try to change the topic around which the discussion revolves back to Pokémon.

So what's going on in everyone's Pokeventures?

My adventure is to avoid pokémon, digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh. Right now I feel it belong to the past and I will never ever deal with it again.

I can understand avoiding the whoring-out of the franchises, but the games themselves (at least, the Pokemon games) are of a respectable quality. I wouldn't completely rule them out if I were you.

That is, the traditional Pokemon games... the spinoffs are hit or miss apparently.

people here in brazil prefer animes (japanese cartoons) but i don't like cartoons...

Either you're still wrong or Brazil is a very, very odd country. They seemed to contend pretty strongly for popularity for a while here in America, but I can say without a doubt that Pokemon is the champion here currently.

Granted, even Pokemon isn't as crazy of a fad as it used to be.

pokemon was the champion when i was 7 years old, and now i have 14

oh and i remember some cartoons i like:

What's the cartoon/anime where kids buy different monster cards and fight with them? I always thought that was a brilliant example of how to create a simple commercial someone will pay to air for a couple of years.

Eh, it's still better than DINO RIDERS. Exact same story, cartoon made to sell action figures, they couldn't even air it for a year.

I think that's Yu-gi-oh. Though it's hard to know, I've only watched a tiny bit of it.

Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, Digimon, Beyblade, ...are animes. No cartoons.

The thing with all the cartoons and such these days is that there's too much fighting and insulting and such. It's just making young kids pretend to do it. I mean, the other day at school, I say two kids pretending to be martial arts fighters. They were throwing pretend punches and kicks, when one kid 'accidentally' kicked the other guy in the groin. The kid started crying. Oh boy, it looked painful...

It isn't that bad, as that what happened, when I was still in school.

One guy, kicked a football on the school's roof. He goed to search the football on the roof. When one of those guys just wanted to make some (super Dragon Ball ninja moves) and climb the roof aswell, and throw the other guy down from roof. The guy was taken to hospital, and the guy, who thowed the other guy, was taken to homeshool. You know what is it like?

So yeah. Cartoons do show just bad things for kids, and everyone.

I was in luck, though. Foe's HP was almost 1, and I managed to get it to fall asleep. It worked!

When it comes to all the stuff they created around it later (like the anime, card games etcetera), I personally don't like that. Only the games.

I picked up Pokemon for the first time in an age a few days ago, and one of the first things I did was find a shiny Geodude. Also, I just beat the Elite 4.

Heh, I think that game's timer records how long it's been since you played and grants you extra luck. I remember that each time I came back to it after not playing... I managed to miraculously capture some of the Legendary types in a surprisingly short amount of time.

I always made fun of how people flocked to all the pokemon stuff. Then secretly stowed away into my room to fire up my gameboy to catch another one, or beat a gym. Anyways, the beauty of the game is the ability for most anyone to play it well enough for it to be fun.
