The Pokémon series are good, but anything higher than red/blue/yellow just tends to be exactly like the previous game, only with a different "professor", "towns", more Pokémon and some extra features. Also, catching them all has become quite impossible, seeing as there are like 20 exclusive Pokémon by now (and there are freaking a LOT of Pokémon).
I find myself returning to Yellow and Gold more than Emerald. Won't buy Diamond or Pearl since I don't have a DS and I'm not considering buying one, yet.
Btw, one more original Pokémon game is Mystery Dungeon. The story is a bit cheesy (human changes into Pokémon, enters a Pokémon-only world and finds out he has to save the world), but it's pretty enjoyable. Also, all (well, 386) Pokémon feature in just one game.
