Re: Dink for android released
Hey guys, I finished my Dink android port finally!
I'm hoping to give my free Windows "HD" version a little TLC and and release an official version of that as well. It's near done it just needs some tweaks with resolutions and input.

Does anyone even really use the Android?
Wohoo! Can't wait to try this out. Everyone should use Android or Windows, Skorn. Don't fall for Apple and their methods, please.

EDIT: Bought for 249JP¥
Ok, just found a serious bug. Downloaded a bunch of dmods including my own and started it. But when I arrive at Freg castle the game freezes and I can't do a thing. The music loops all the time even when not in game. I even tried a task-killer but DinkHD won't show up so I can't quit it. And the save state has frozen also, so I can't access the menu. Only thing to do is to shut off the phone.
Freg castle? What DMOD is that?
If you don't know, you haven't played the Dmod. Shame on you! GO PLAY IT! IT WAS AN AWESOME MOD!
Crash at freg castle? Hmm, that's no good. If you can email me the save?.dat (or even a save state.. both of these will be on your SD card) and tell me how to reproduce the crash I can fix it for the next update.
Oh and .. yeah, what DMOD is it?

I believe he is talking about Grasp of Darkness. Not entirely sure though.
So did you ever get around to removing some of the limits for DinkHD? Like the graphics sequences, variable limits, ... And the all important fix to the problem where a sprite's main function stops running when it is hit/talked to/pushed? I've seen at least another 2 posts related to that problem in the last 2 weeks
Really looking forward to having an official release for that so I can migrate my d-mod in development (hopefully with the additions!)

Yeah, I'm talking about Grasp of Darkness which you could make out slightly in my previous posts. Slightly. Alright, I'll see if there's a save file. Might be a weird script on the knight that messes things up.

Sent you a mail, Seth. It seems that the freeze screens have one thing in common, they all got scripts attached to the screen.
Hey, just an update, I fixed the bug! If the last line of a file was just "/r" (ascii 10) (yes you, vision3.c) it could get into an endless loop in some situations. Oops, my bad.
I'll put out a new Android version soon with this fix in it.

I bought it last night, it was kind of laggy on my HTC Hero. It did help to turn off FPS limiting and Pic smoothing though.
Hate me and flame all you want, but is this...a bit of a financial scam here on a forum, or am I really just paranoid? Or both?
What do you mean?
Oh, and I thought you were a Dinker, Skorn.

This is a game ported by the author to another system. If you want to buy it, you buy it. If you don't like it: fine, no one cares.
If you're trying to show us how smart you've become over the past months, you should stop. It isn't working. Go back to school, kiddo.

I don't know about a financial scam, but I kind of lost my hope in this HD version since all the updates of the iPhone version. It had so many bugs, and still has, that people should indeed not be asked to pay for it. This goes with the android version too. I don't know, maybe it wasn't that great of an idea to begin with. Dink just doesn't seem to be fully operational on all these devices. Especially without lots and LOTS of testing and updates. For example, I think the iPhone version was released WAY too quickly with too little testing.
It's impossible to test all the d-mods for a normal person you know. It doesn't have too many bugs. You can complete the game, which is what you paid for. In my opinion the HD version is a big success. You're playing Dink for free you know, for how many years now? This HD version took work to create and this work should be rewarded. The price is ridiculously low for what you get. I bought the original version on CD when it came out and I STILL don't feel it's unfair to have to pay for a HD version on iPhone. It's a new version with extra features. Hell, there's soooooo many products like DLC out there that were clearly cut from the full game to make extra money. THAT'S a money scam.
Um... extra features? And that's my point, it was clear from the beginning that it is going to be impossible to test all the D-Mods and that us lazy Dinkers wouldn't be much of a help. So, why start it in the first place? And it doesn't even cost that much, as you said, which is great for those who buy it, but not for the creators, which really doesn't seem very sensible at all.
EDIT: I kind of agree with Skorn here. I think this is pretty much of a rip-off, considering the game is free on the internet.

The game isn't free on the iPhone. It isn't free on the Android. I happen to like the fact that I can now play it on a mobile phone and the price was not an obstacle here.
I find it somewhat offensive that you would call this a rip-off when Seth made the original game FREEWARE. WITH SOURCE CODE. You can thank that for patch 1.08 btw.
You're a consumer, nobody is forcing you to buy it if you don't want. But don't go saying it's a rip-off to ask money for your hard work. It might be a port, but it's more than that. Many parts of the engine were rewritten to work with a variety of devices. This allows the same code to run on PC, iPhone, Andriod, probably anything that supports OpenGL. You don't do that AND fix bugs in a week.
And if you hadn't noticed, it was Skorn trolling and being an ass again.

You would have to be a complete game addict to need a game for multiple devices. Don't go on flaming Skorn in this case, he's kinda right.
Right, that's why every game developer is porting their old games over to other systems. That's why so many gamers who loved Prince of Persia or Sly Raccoon are going to buy the HD collection. That's why Square Enix releases ports every 2 months these days. That's why PSX games are getting rereleased on PSN.
Again, the mobile version might not be meant for you, but don't assume others are addicts just because they have multiple gaming systems they might want to enjoy the same game on.

A wise man once said "Don't criticize what you can't understand".
Darn right I criticize thing that I can't understand, if they are just plain dumb.
I'm guessing Skull has one of those old Nokia phones... That's why he's so cranky.
That, or, he need to get laid.
I might be joking, you decide.

You do it with him marpro, it's for a greater good.
As my motto says, "Nokia sells bullsh*t". And yes, I got one of those craps. Not enough money to buy better ones. But I don't see the point of getting the same game for multiple consoles, ANY consoles, from iPhone to Atari. Especially games, that you get free off the internet.
And as for getting laid, unlike you Swedes, I don't pick up the first male off the streets.

To show your support.
And dink isn't good enough to stand out among free games on the net, but for a mobile game it's actually good enough. So it might not be something for us who like it as a computergame, but I still bhought it to show that I support seth and isn't someone who expect him to give away what he has been spending a lot of time on!
This is actually his work.

Well, because this is his work, he should have hired some people to test it a little better. As far as I know, even though we Dinkers tested all the versions, it still has lots of bugs. I mean, a buggy game is never worth paying for, no matter how good it would otherwise be.
Seth can't hire people to test if he's gonna sell it for 3 dollars, you should think before saying something like that
And buggy games are not worth paying for? We're in the era where every game has patches within the first 2 weeks that solve a million bugs.
And buggy games are not worth paying for? We're in the era where every game has patches within the first 2 weeks that solve a million bugs.
Yeah, but this era sucks in every major way and classic games like Dink should not be brought to it at all. Also, if Seth is so eager to put a price on the HD version, then maybe he should just put a higher price, so he could actually hire some professional testers.
I'm not trying to be against Seth on purpose here or anything. It just kinda seems like you're only praising all of his works, because he's, well err... Seth.

Well if we didn't like dink and seth why would we be here?
Most games have beta-testers whiom are like us. And all games have bugs, even Dink had back in 1998 and all the way up to the v1.08 release And to call Dink HD a scam? Take a look at Left 4 Dead 2, now that's a scam (even though I bought it and fell inlove with it).
I guess it ain't too bad considering how little it costs. But I'm still saying it should have been tested much more.
Well isn't that what's happening now? Someone found a bug, it's already fixed. That's support. Not like Blizzard where you wait 3 months for bugs to be fixed and they have dozens of testers.

I have played some games by Blizzard but I haven't experienced that.

You're hooked to that crack? Ok, respect towards Kyle - 99%.
Too bad they released failpatches, but as I see it now, everything's fixed and Cataclysm release is in 5 days. WOHOO!
WoW never was that appealing to me. They release patches to keep you hooked
Patches? PATCHES?!
We don' need no STINKIN' patches!
Except, perhaps for Dink

Hmm, ok, I feel like I'd better respond to this "what a scam, charging for a free game!" idea.
I've spent about three months (in addition to a year of writing the original game) porting Dink to mobiles.
I didn't just do a quick port, I tried to make an old game truly playable by lovingly adding new features that Dink has never had such as full state-saving, in-game DMOD download/install, time-skipping. The reason there isn't a free version out there with things is simple:
It's Hard To Do.
If Absolution or anyone thinks that is a "scam" and $3 to support Dink by paying for my time isn't worth it to have these features on a mobile, by all means, stick with free versions, which happens to includes Dink HD for Windows, btw.
HD Bugs? Huh? I'm really happy about how few problems the mobile versions have had considering the massive internal changes, and this forum is the reason to thank for that. It was the largest beta test I've ever done, more than the original Dink had!
Anyway, I have a new Windows Dink HD version I've been working on the last few days, so regardless of how you feel about the mobile versions, realize that it made this version possible.
It's pretty cool as you can now drag the window to any size and play dink across multiple monitors. Why would you ever want to do that? I dunno, but it's fun to do once.
I plan to eventually release the HD version as open source.

Oh and Seth, I tried to play Dink HD on my HTC Hero with my earplugs, but I'm not sure if it works. It just plays through the speaker on the phone.
You don't need to defend yourself to people thinking it's a scam Seth.
And I'm looking forward to the next (or well, first?) official release of Dink HD Hope you had the time to do something about those limitations, but if not, it's still really cool^^

I personally feel three bucks is very cheap for the amount of game you get. I'd probably buy one if I had some sort of smartphone, but since I don't use my phone for anything besides making phone-calls this probably isn't happening anytime soon.
I am wondering why you'd make the HD-version open source as well, wouldn't that encourage piracy? I mean all the graphics and sounds can be used from the game you can download here. Not that three dollars would really make piracy worthwhile, I'm just wondering.

Encourage illegal downloading of a game that has been free for years?
If it were Open Sourced, then "piracy" would be impossible since it would be open-sourced. You can't steal something that's free.
People can already pirate it if they want to (for iOS). I don't think you quite know what you're on about.

For years? The first version of Dink HD I saw was last september. That's 3 months.
And just like it is hard to steal something that is free it is also hard to sell something that is free. I mean... It can't be that hard to understand.

You don't seem to understand how the iPhone App store and Android stores work. They're a completely closed system!
Seth wouldn't relinquish the price on the phone versions, he would continue selling them at the same price, while making the engine code base available for all.
Dink has been freeware since 1999 which is what I was referring to. People can already download the Dink game for free instead of paying the nominal few dollars to get it on their iPhone. Are these people in some way swashbuckling pirates depriving Seth of his deserved money?

Making Dink available on the Android and I-phone is more of a way to advertise the game again. The pricetag on the phone-versions is the cost of making the game available on such 'consoles'; It has to be profitable to the phone manufacturer or whatever.
Remember, the original Dink is YEARS old, as well.

A lot of people whining about ~3$..?
I don't know really what you people see as a problem here. It's not like you have to buy it for your phone, you can stick to the free PC version. I'm just happy to support Seth for all his hard work and for the fact that I have been entertained by one of his games for years.
Especially you people who claim this is some sort of scam, I mean, grow up.

I'm not saying it's a scam. I'm saying that it is absolutely pointless.
The current conversation is absolutely pointless.
Hey, that's great and all, but when are you going to make a game with Novashell so we can buy it and then have a base source and resources that we can use to mod the crap out of it?

I sort of took a detour from my plans of doing a new 2D RPG with Novashell and instead am thinking of 3D games with a focus on mobile devices.
If I ever get a nice idea that would work well with Novashell I'll use it though, or at least chunks of it.
I've written yet another, lower level framework, that is more for 3D stuff and pure C++ hardcore fun that works better for what I'm currently doing. ( http://www.protonsdk.com )

That's way beyond what us Dinkers can handle anyway Even Novashell is too hard for 99% of us, which is why Dink is still alive today and it is STILL one of the best moddable games, even total conversions are possible.
