Help for Diablo II Installation

I have a question I'm hoping someone can answer. I thought I had a virus on my computer (couldn't open programs) so I took it in today for help. During the whatever program they use to scan for "bad stuff" somehow my Diablo II game or files got corrupted and now it won't load.

I have many saved copies of the "Save" file of my character in the game. If I uninstall the game, reinstall the game to correct the corrupted files then paste the "Save" file back into the Diablo will this reinstall my character? There were many times the game would crash and I would lose things on the ground in town, so I would save and exit then copy the "Save" folder back which would revert the game to a previous point and I would get my items back, BUT does that only work if there already was a "Save" folder in the game? I.e., uninstalling the game would obviously delete the Registry entries for my character and I'm not sure just pasting the "Save" folder back into Diablo would re-enter the Registry entries . . . okay, I'm not explaining this very well at all.

Basically, if I unistall then reinstall then paste the "Save" folder does anyone know if this will reinstate my character? I have a level 52 bowazon that's taken me months to create and, dorky as it sounds, I've grown very attached to her and I'm quite upset thinking that she may be lost forever.

If anyone can advise me I would be so grateful. Any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thank you, thank you in advance.

Mmmm, pizza.
I didn't experience any problems when I copied the savegames of my character to the new PC, so I guess it's all save. Be aware, though, that 1 character uses 4 files for every difficulty.

Thank you, magicman, for replying. You're right, it worked fine, but now I'm getting an "access error" message and can't run the game 50% of the time. ROFL!

Called Blizzard Support, went something like this:

Me: "I get an error".
Blizzard Rep: "Have you tried installing the patch?"
Me: "I don't like the changes in v. 1.10."
Blizzard Rep: "Have you tried installing the patch?"
Me: "Why did it work fine for 2 months but now I'm getting an error?"
Blizzard Rep: "Have you tried installing the patch?"
Me: "Why isn't doing a fresh reinstall negating the error message?"
Blizzard Rep: "Have you tried installing the patch?"
Me: "Why am I now getting sound problems?"
Blizzard Rep: "Have you tried installing the patch?"
Me: "Why are the cinematics now 'pixellated'?"
Blizzard Rep: "Have you tried installing the patch?"
Me: "I DON'T LIKE THE CHANGES IN V. 1.10!"
Blizzard Rep: "Have you tried installing the patch?"

Apparently I should try installing the patch.

Strange... I is supposed to work without the patch. I've got 1.09.22 and it works fine, no errors, nothing.

Anyway, just try installing the patch

Ah, 1.10's pretty fun and relatively easy for my level 40-something Ladder barbarian on battle.net... and I haven't even twinked him.

Okay, I guess I'll try installing the patch.

I bought the game in October 2003 and, believe it or not, it's version 1.03 (!). Created a bowazon, discovered the "bow bug" so I downloaded and installed v. 1.05. Now, after doing some research, I've discovered that v. 1.05 causes the Access Violation c0000005 bug that crashes the game so it seems I've traded one bug for another (does Blizzard not test their programs?).

In v. 1.07 they took out the ability to gamble unique and set items (okay, I pretty much have most of the uniques I want) but in v. 1.10 they increased the odds of gambling exceptional items. Well, that sounds fine and dandy, but according to my research you can only gamble exceptionals in the Expansion so this doesn't help me for my classic game (want the Expansion, not enough hard drive space).

Plus tougher monsters, reduced effectiveness of experience runs . . . don't really want all that. I asked the Blizzard rep if it was true that you had to be level 70 to enter Hell difficulty and he confirmed that it was. I guess my point is that for D2 classic gamers with this v. 1.10 patch you get all the "bad" stuff (harder monsters) but none of the "improved" stuff (being able to gamble exceptionals).

Ah, well. I guess I'll try the patch. Please excuse my rambling. I originally bought my computer so that I could work from home . . . then I discovered computer games starting with Dink, and I've been hopelessly addicted ever since.

They may have removed the ability to gamble for sets/uniques in 1.07, but actually, they reinstated it in 1.09, which was released in August 2001. So it's been back in the game for about two and a half years now. Heh.

And buy a bigger hard drive, dangit, 'cause the game is so much better with the expansion

What level is your character of choice, anyway? Just curious.

I know, I'm dying to try the Expansion, but apparently since I bought the computer for work, the gaming aspect of it sucks and it's not just a matter of increasing the hard drive space but also of improving its speed and a whole bunch of other technical stuff I don't understand. I got an estimate of about $800 which I can't really afford right now.

I have just one character so far, a level 52 bowazon in Act II Nightmare. I wuvs her. What about you? Any fave characters?

I have bunches of characters, but one character I'm particularly fond of is my level 87 barbarian on battle.net, USWest. I made a few major mistakes while developing his skills and whatnot, but he still does a fairly decent job of killing even despite that. With the recent introduction of the 1.10 patch, I've started a Ladder character on battle.net also; he's a level 41 (or 42?) barbarian that I don't believe I've ruined thus far.
