Great classic video games?

Hi guys! So, I found myself not enjoying the video games I own anymore. My life sucks anyway, and video games made me somewhat forget about it. But now... there is basically nothing. Well, I thought: I basically missed out most great video games of... well, all-time. Yes, from games that just came out yesterday to the earliest days of video games. So, I would like to ask: what games would you recommend?

I remember playing a PC game called Drakan: order of the flame when I was younger. Haven't played it since 2001... But I enjoyed it back then!

I can't vow for it, but the soundtrack is still great though.

Well I don't know if they are GREAT. And maybe you have already played them. I'm a HUGE fan of RPGs.
In case you haven't played Morrowind, PLAY IT. It may seem rusty, hard and slow in the beginning, but it's like a boulder. Once you put some interest in it, it'll start rolling.
Other game that you may NOT have played, all made by the same company, Gothic 1,2 and 3, and Risen 1,2 and 3. My favourites among those are The first 2 Gothic and Risen games.

If you're looking to play on an emulator, a handheld perhaps, Fire Emblem is one hell of a strategy game. Also, if your PC is powerful enough, you can play mortal kombat armageddon on an emulator.

ALSO, another strategy game for the PC, Heroes of Might and Magic 3.

Those are my favourite "classics"(?)

EDIT: there are also the first 2 tes games, Arena and Daggerfall.
You would usually need to download dosbox and then set it up to play the two, but the links I gave you let you download an individual setup that installs the game automatically. Also, everything is set up automatically and instantly when you enter the game. So no headaches installing and playing them.

what games would you recommend?
Mu.

What you're looking for is fulfillment. Games are not the best way to get that. What does give it, is a personal thing. For me, I like to create things. It doesn't really matter what: art, furniture, machines to help me do things, clothes, or to get closer to your question, games. It doesn't matter what it is, as long as it takes effort and I can be proud of the result, it works for me. And actually, if practice or preparation means that I can do complex things without much effort, that also feels very good.

Aside from that, whatever you're looking for probably involves other people. Working on something with others is nice, especially because you give and receive feedback, so when you do something that is worth being proud of, you get confirmation of that, which feels good. It may also lead to romance and sex, which we're programmed to value as one of the major goals in life.

So if you insist that you want games, I'd suggest anything that requires multiple people in the same room: board games, card games, etc.

shevek: The problem is, I could never find fulfilment or happiness. I don't think creating things would satisfy me. And a very big problem for me: I just can't feel a sense of accomplishment when I put effort into anything. In fact, this is one of the reasons I always try to do use as little effort for things as possible. Things involving other people? If it was so easy. I have no friends whatsoever. I never had any, and for a long time now, I doubt I will ever have any. I'm not the person who can make friends, or like groups larger than 3-4 people. You seem to understand what my problem is. You are not the only one. But to this day, no one could ever find a solution for it. And I doubt anyone will.

I disagree.
The problem is, I could never find fulfilment or happiness.

You've got to figure that out yourself. It's not the same thing for every person. Oh, and sometimes, a process that leads to reaching some goal is far more satisfying than reaching a goal itself.

As for the games, Heroes V (+ expansions), Age of empires 2 the conquerors, Prince of Persia (original 2d game + Prince of Persia 3D), Counter strike 1.6 (some servers, not all), Dink Smalldude (of course), Hitman blood money (haven't played newer ones)....

Special mentions:
Nihilumbra (brilliant story)
Limbo (brilliant game)
Assassin's creed 1 (if you like psychological, philosophical questions about mankind + parkour)

I just can't feel a sense of accomplishment when I put effort into anything.
Do you have any idea why that is? Let's see if we can figure it out through some questions. Do you not feel like it's good enough, even after putting effort in? Or are you not happy with it even when it is perfect? Would it help if you were praised for it by others? In particular by others whose judgment you normally value?

Things involving other people? If it was so easy.
I did not intend to imply that it was easy.

I have no friends whatsoever. I never had any, and for a long time now, I doubt I will ever have any.
That is terrible, and I suggest you do everything you can to fix that. It's not easy, certainly, but it is totally worth it.

I'm not the person who can make friends, or like groups larger than 3-4 people.
Neither am I. But I do always have a group of one or two friends, and that's how I like it. Since we're similar in that respect, I'll explain how I try making new friends when I want to. Others would go to bars or similar places, but whenever I'm there, I mostly want to run away. From what you say, I'm guessing it's the same for you.

So what I do instead, is find a hobby which involves other people. In my case, since I'm sexually attracted to women, I try to find something where they are present (which means I avoid things like computer clubs; I like it there, but I don't like to be around only men). To be clear: I'm not just looking for sex, and I'm not trying to only get female friends. I'm just trying to make sure I don't get only male friends.

In my case, I chose to join a dancing club. I met new people there, and there's no problem figuring out what to do. While being with those people, I tell them about myself and (ask about and) listen to what they tell about themselves. When I do that to enough people, my experience is that it doesn't take long to make new friends. The most important part is to be open, both about myself, and about listening to others.

And it helps to be learning with the others. So if you think you're not good enough at something, that's actually a good thing in this case. I couldn't dance at all when I started. That made it easier to talk to the others, because that's how everyone starts. If you want to learn about something, and you can find a place where others are learning about the same thing, that is a great way to make new friends.

he is the very concept of psychology itself. he was created long ago when the great philosophers of old met one day to discuss the mind. the surge of their own ideas destroyed them and birthed shevek in their place.

as for games, bluedy suggested some, uh...slow games. like, i dunno. you want fulfilling old games, you want to play something like doom or quake and kill hell a lot. or whatever enemy is in quake.

rpgs can be fulfilling though once you become powerful as duck, but that wears off in elder scrolls because those games are ass. maybe you want to play an mmo or something and be heralded a great hero by your raid static. i just don't recommend ff14 for that since their idea of "hard" content is virtually impossible and only 1% of people can clear it.

but...maybe that's the kind of challenge that would help? something virtually impossible??

Hmm... old games (we're talking 2000 and before) I remember very fondly: Deus Ex, Half Life, Chrono Trigger, Seiken Densetsu 3, Dark Sun: Shattered Lands, Planescape: Torment, TIE Fighter.

Glad you weighed in Shevek. As a former loner who now has an awesome social life, I would love to weigh in with thoughtful advice and encouragement here, but am stupid-busy today.

I've always been surprised at how popular Heroes III was in Eastern Europe, and how the modding scene is concentrated in Russia and Poland. I've been playing it since age 10 and I still like to load it up sometimes. Five is basically a modern remake of three but it's not as good overall.

I think it just has a good combination of nicely done pre-rendered 3D along with a really nice soundtrack, and a great amount of variance in how the game works which overall makes it great to replay over and over again. It was one of the few games I got working on the MSN Game Zone back in the day on my 56k modem where I of course lost every time.

The modding community has done a lot of brilliant stuff such as the HD patch, VCMI, and of course WoG which added tons of great features to it as well. I believe a bunch of Poles even got together to re-create the removed futuristic town type which 3DO got death threats for prior to release so it still has a vibrant and ambitious community even today.

Pre-rendered 3D graphics are one of the best type. That's one of the reasons I started playing Dink. If I were to judge the graphics of a game, I wouldn't say "I hate that game for having such old graphics" or something like that. For me, the graphics of a game are "interesting" at best and "boring" at worst.
As for the soundtrack, DUCK YES

Heroes of Might and Magic III - I own that game. Years ago I was interested in strategy games. Today not so much. I'm actually surprised to find out that there are so many Heroes III fans in this community. As a kid, I played it's demo version. Back then I thought the graphics were quite realistic. Today I don't find them as amazing, but I still think they are nice. Maybe back then I wasn't used to today's graphics. Or perhaps they just look better on a CRT monitor.

i got another idea. you say you want a fulfilling game. i'm not sure what would be fulfilling to you, but i'll take a guess.

if you want something with long term goals, the sims. that also checks customization off the list of things that people might find fulfilling.

character customization is neato. but i'm a total fashion whore in games. maybe you're not. and you can cover your sims' horrible shit paintings on the walls as an everlasting testament to how much they suck at painting. then, blow up the house with ovens.

There are a lot of games from around that time that still hold up reasonably well because they had a distinct art style. Age of Empires and its sequel have already been mentioned, but they're a good example of it, and people still played AoE II on GameRanger until recently when Microsoft re-released an "HD" version on Steam.

Another "series" of sorts in a similar vein is the Impressions city builder series made up of Caesar III, Zeus/Poseidon, and the Ancient Egyptian one. I played through both campaigns of Caesar III last year after discovering a fan-made widescreen patch and updated installer and it still holds up reasonably well due to its distinct graphical style and it has a nice soundtrack as well.

beware, triple triad is actually super awful and has too much random bullshit to be good. all the minigames in ffvii are better.

yes. mingames. you don't want to play the game with only 1 mini game, do you? unless you count drawing magic in battle or not using magic at all because it will lower your character's stats.

Yes, I liked the mini games in FF7(Golden Saucer much) but Triple Triad was as addictive as gambling to me. It came to a point where I cared less about the plot and more about finding cards to make cool items(You can turn monsters into cards, win them or just randomly find them, change those cards into items, and those items into weapons).
