Why I think Story is the most important part of a game

Story is nearly essential to a video game atleast in my opinion it connects us with the characters it makes us feel for the game.
Thats not to say it impossible to not have it but I feel like to have a wow! experience there needs to be a story in there otherwise it lacking.
Thats why I couldnt get into Doom(The game engine itself was a masterpiece though due to John Carmacks genius programming skills) as much when I got older my favourite FPS are Goldeneye 007,Halo 1 and 2 due atleast a reasonable story.

Life? What's that? Can I download it?!
Story is good, yes, but certainly not essential. Many, many games (Tetris, Minecraft, Mario Bros.) are good as it is and doesn't need a story.

It is pretty much always GAMEPLAY > STORY, think about it.

I wonder if they'll make a movie about Tetris or monopoly, or if they'll remake Tetris with a story and probably take the fun out of it.

Well, the order of importance of different elements of a game depends on both the game's own design and the consumer's expectation.

For a Mario game, gameplay is most important because people know that if they want a very fun game that's easy to get into, Mario is perfect for the job.

For a Final Fantasy game (and many RPG's in general), it's usually story that becomes most important element since Final Fantasy games have come to be expected to tell very interesting tales.

All that said, there are ways that the story and gameplay can be carefully connected without even putting a single word on the game screen. This is usually in the form of aesthetics such as the designs of the areas the game takes place in, and subtle things such as the enemies you are battling. Mario games are actually quite good at this kind of story telling. However, my favorite example of this has to go to Super Metroid.

So in this way, it's not an unreasonable thing to say that Super Metroid has a good story even though the only part that really "tells" a story is the introduction where Samus talks about her mission and history, since the environments, enemies, sound, and designs have so much to say.

So for me, the most important element of the game just depends on what the game itself is trying to make important. I enjoy a fun game, but I also enjoy great stories.

There's a reason why 'No plot, no problem' is a trope. Because it's been done a lot of times with great success. Even today.

Now, there is no singular essential part to a game, there are simply a large gathering of different aspects that make up a game. There are graphics, which can lend to a game's overall appearance. There is music, which can create tension and sorrow, happiness and excitement. There's even storylines, which can drive the player to continue playing. However, not one single part is purely essential.

Tetris actually does have a story. If you win it (which is possible, but incredibly hard) you see a rocket taking off out of Russia. It never tells you what you are doing, but it is evident that you are loading this rocket.

So the blocks are crates, but either way it doesn't seem like it has much of a story, the other aspects still make it great. Also do they include the rocket scene in all versions or just a specific version, my grandpa gave me some games

Story > Everything for me too IF the game actually relies on a narrative for the gameplay progress.

If I'm playing Mario Kart 8, there is no story necessary to push me into the next race. Same for many platforming games, etc... Basically, if there is a feeling that each gameplay segment is its own contained unit that can be "restarted" (usually levels, matches, races, online games, sims, ...) then a story isn't as important to me.

On the other hand, if a game puts forth a plot that drives the continuation of the gameplay segments, it better be good or I'll lose interest VERY quickly. And I'm pretty strict with this on a personal level. A good story is NOT find the 5 artifacts, enlist the help of 6 other races, pursue a character across each area only to just miss them each time, ... Those are stories in service of the gameplay and it's just shameful.
