SSD vs HDD for Long Term Storage

I have a shitload of files that I would be absolutely ducking devastated to lose. I installed a SSD a while ago to store my massive-ass labyrinth of folders and files that I once mentioned here to make sure I won't lose it.

Then I looked up 'SSD Temprature' as I often monitor my HDD's temperature to make sure it hasn't gone above 45c or below 25c. Lots of articles out there about how SSDs are terrible at retaining data. It's ducking hot here and articles say that if it's hotter and your SSD is stored without power for a few weeks, it'll wipe itself.

Obviously, I'm taking everything off the SSD right now and putting it back where it used to be. Granted, the only times it'll be off is if I restart the PC for a bit, but what if the power goes off? Then it'll be hot as hell with no way to cool off until PG&E gets off its lazy corporate shitty asses and fixes their shit. Plus, while moving the folder onto the SSD the first time, I noticed that the amount of stuff I moved wasn't the same as before. Moving it off, it seemed to be even lower. I don't know if there's so much shit that it can't count the same each time or if I'm just a paranoid country music sensation or both.

So, what's your method for storing data for eternity? Don't say cloud, because that is a horrible idea - the service could go bust, and they're probably going to send that all off to governments anyways. Duck that. Not happening.

EDIT: My most dink related thread yet, but whatever. I ain't signing up for another forum to use once and not get an answer for a hundred hours. Plus, some of you have had failed drives, so you might have learned something about how to avoid losing shit.

EDITEDIT: I have an old harddrive sitting around from when I was a tiny little faggot. I was still able to run it and access it a year or two ago, but either it broke while I was using it, or the cables were loose. It's also not exactly stored well. It just sits around, really.

You shouldn't worry about SSD's losing their data. There are some thruth about it but it's not gonna happen.

Since the SSD is a speedy beast compared to the mechanical HDD, you should store your OS on it and games to eradicate loading times. Files, movies etc. should be stored on a non-SSD drive. I got a dedicated computer with a couple of 3TB HDD's for storing stuff.

Why exactly shouldn't I worry about it given the climate I'm running it in and the possibility of power going out?

As for installing Windows on it and lots of games, I got the SSD specifically for my giant ass pile of folders and stuff. If I put the OS on it, I'd have to redo a lot of things and I've tested the speed, and it's like, a second faster than the HDD apparently. Files I want to save take over half of the capacity to and I think it would be better to just upgrade to only SSD down the line to run everything from including the OS, but I'd need a shitton of money since 2TB SSD's are 1000 dollars...and provided they are superior to HDD in every way including data retention.

EDIT: I might just have to have one copy of it on HDD and another on SSD and just update them both at the same time when I need to store something. It's like technology has gotten to the point where there's much more work on my end than the hardware since Skype has also decided to stop recording all the file details, so I have to write it out whenever I get or send a file.

If you think heat is the issue here, maybe get some more cooling options for it? I can assure you that a proper cooled SSD won't lose any data. Even a hot one will still last several years.

Why did you get a SSD for files and stuff? The SSD storage capacity is smaller than an HDD and an SSD costs a lot more per GB in comparison. A 2TB SSD is way out of budget for everyone but a 2TB HDD is very affordable.

My current setup on the computer I'm on now is a 110GB Intel SSD for the OS and appdata, documents etc. a 250GB Samsung one SSD only for games and a 1TB HDD for files.

I thought SSD would be more stable than HDD, so. I'm also putting everything back on the SSD because when it was done, suddenly over 3000 files had too long a name to fit on the desktop even though they were there perfectly fine before.

This has been a horrible idea.

Heh, yeah that sounds weird. I guess they're both stable but the SSD is faster and more exclusive to applications and not for storage.

Well I can't put it back on the HDD now, so I guess I've ducked everything.

EDIT: Apparently, SSDs also have a limited number of writes. The duck is wrong with technology these days...

I don't think I can now. If I want to put everything back where it used to be, I'd have to rename over 3000 files that Windows has decided don't fit anymore.

EDIT: Despite the overwhelming numbers here, I am feeling somewhat safer about what I just did. I've put everything (I hope) back on the SSD. That folder I have a text document pointing to has files that don't fit on it though due to the file path/name limits, so I may have to rename some things to get absolutely everything in one spot again.

Then I guess I'll just get a regular harddrive to use as a storage thing because SSD is mysterious shit and there's even less definitive knowledge on them than HDDs it seems. At least with HDD, I know what temperatures are fine and that I should probably replace them every 3 years or so?

I think the full path name can't exceed a certain number of characters like 128 or 256 or something. I would recommend that you repair Windows instead of copying all those files.

I'll update this post with the longest file path I could have if I put the remainder of the files on the SDD.

Or I guess, whatever. I'll post an example.

EDIT: There are 124 filenames that will exceed the limit. Next edit will have an example filepath.

EDITEDIT:
F:\World of Perfect\Archive Thingy\SAVED FROM THE HORROR OF ALIENWARE\AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA\Everything\Backup\Carmen Coloscopy and Dummy Denise\Videos\Episodes\Series 1\Episode 1 - The Burning Cabinet\Lines\George\Go-Man George Well I am vanquished.mp3

260 characters. That is the first one that Windows tells me won't fit.

Yeah, it's been clear from the beginning has it not? Name folders properly.

Try a mass/bulk renaming program and shorten those folder names. It seems like the max is 255 characters.

On the HDD vs. SSD, you should only see the SSD as a faster, more expensive HDD not made for storage. The stuff you're reading on the internet are often not true or over exaggerated. So yes, get an HDD for storage and keep the SSD for games and possibly the OS. I use CrystalDiskInfo to see if any drive is in danger.

Yeah, I have CrystalDisckInfo too and notuced that both drives were cold as duck for no reason.

It's not even cold in here. The times I had it really cold, the HDD never dropped to what it did. It was below 25c and SSD was even lower.

I'm not ducking allowed to manage things properly.

EDIT: Yeah, I should just get another HDD to store World of Perfect on. The SSD won't fit anymore, but I clearly have no reason to use it. Sure the OS will load faster, but I probably won't notice much. Skype's the only thing that takes eternity to open, but then I'll have main.db floating around on there and I don't want it to vanish. Though, even that's probably not an option anymore since I can't put this on the desktop anymore without renaming 3000 things. Almost everything fits on it's own drive though. I have 58 folders that have stuff that won't.

You said SSD aren't made for storage, but rather for programs. So pretty much, you're confirming they're pieces of shit for storage, right?

Yeah, don't use them for everyday storage like pictures, movies, music etc. The SSD makes applications faster in that it reduces read/write times so use it exclusively for those.

There may be other uses for SSD that I'm unaware of besides games and applications though.

Yeah, and I just read something about how searching for files writes bullshit to it as well, thus reducing its lifespan.

Duck SSD all around. Never using again. Sticking it all back on HDD again... maybe if everything is in C:\ first, I can avoid it suddenly claiming stuff is too long and then put it on the desktop again.

Then blow up the SSD because there's no use for it.

Hey, you can still use it as an expensive storage disk and maybe install some game on it if there's space. But now you know if you ever need more storage, buy a mechanical hard drive.

Yeah, I guess I can use it for a few things, but if I save screenshots with anything on it, I'd have to go in and move them out of the SSD afterwards.

So, ehhhh...

I have moved World of Perfect onto Titanic Sank in the (C) with no warnings that something was too long, and from there, I moved it to desktop.

Figure dat shit out.

SSDs aren't for storage, they're for fast access with minimal writes only which is why you're supposed to install your OS and maybe some programs onto it and then leave it.

In fact they're pretty terrible for storing things on since they tend to randomly die due to bugs in the controller which occur after waking from standby or some other stupidly common thing that everyone does.

Moving all your files onto it probably shortened its life considerably. You might be able to check with SSDLife how many years it has left.
