3D JPEGs.
Are 3D JPEG images possible in Dink? Because I am making a whole lot of graphics that are 3-dimensional JPEG animations and I need to know if they work. I tried GIFs and those just freeze the game.
hey skorn these clown pick on ya a fairbit ay?
Who cares what they think man i enjoy using my computer and playing dink who cares what these nerds think. Atleast you are making stuff and uploading it unlike me. It is just a game they need to lay off or go back to reality

Lol, I'm not surprised. Didn't anyone tell you that you can only use .BMP files with Dink?
Joker, the reality is that Skorn was a nubcake, not us guys. It is true that we should lay off him for now, though don't blame us for what he did, Skorn brought this upon himself with the multiple accounts, posting after being banned and spamming the forum with crap. He is lucky to even be here, since Redink1 lifted the ban. Go get your facts right, we 'nerds' know what happened.

Is that a good thing? Go ahead, make as much stuff as you please, but don't you upload crap and think that's a good thing.
I won't bother the JPEG-part...
Edit: I'm not saying you're creating crap, I'm saying that IF you make CRAP - DON'T!

I'm confused too... I think Skorn meant exported JPEGs of the various views at different angles of a sprite...
He's saying he is trying to MAKE an Animation in a .jpg format.
I lol'd.
And joker, I can only repeat what has already been said about Skorn; Get your facts right.
Skorn: There's no such thing as a 3d JPEG, An image is an image. Wether the pixels are in a position to make the image appear to be a 3-dimensional picture or not depends on what its showing. A JPEG is a JPEG, and cannot be animated.
And Fireball5 is correct; Dink can only load .BMP files, aka Bitmap images.

Claiming that Skorn uploading bad files is good for the community is akin to saying that someone dumping toxic waste in a river is improving the river.

And top of that...JPEG quality sucks balls. PNG is better.

PNG and BMP images are the best filetypes for any image, imo. I never really use png though, so I'm leaning towards BMP for the victory.

Not if you're uploading it on the net; BMP is uncompressed so it takes a hell of a lot of space opposed to PNG and JPG. In my experience, JPG usually takes less space with photographs, while PNG is better for smaller pictures/graphics.
In my opinion:
GIF is only good for small pictures with a small palette, or specialised uses (such as anmation)
JPEG is only good for medium to large photos, though I personally hate JPEG's low quality.
BMP is good for small pictures or examples, or for rough work.
PNG is my favourite, I prefer it over JPEG for it BMP-like quality: Every pixel has the right colour, any colour you want out of 16.7m, and/or transparency (semitransparency?)
And JPEG generally sucks because its method of compression destroys image data.

My views of images is different:
First off it all depends entirely on how much compression you put into the JPEG images. And JPGS can be animated, (but only after you take each frame of the JPEG and convert them to AVI, GIF, or any other animation file.)
Second, PNG is by far the best you will get for high quality images at a smaller file size, and PNG my friend is not just for small images but big images too.
I did a test between file sizes and best quality and believe-it-or-not PNG was smaller in file size at a high resolution than a JPEG with low compression or nearly no compression.
Try making an HD PNG and a HD JPG and you will notice PNG can be high quality wile the file size smaller than a JPG with the same quality and nearly uncompressed.
Third, BMP images are great, but expensive on disk space as always.
Fourth, my favorite File type for the compression and quality balanced is PNG and TGA files.
And lastly I am sure Scorn ment to have 3D rendered graphics as a JPG, but why not do that and convert them to BMP with a graphics program, since Dink only uses BMP? Use each BMP and program by making a script that can animate those BMPS?

Giff is a small - low resolution file - useless for much of anything except internet - never used for printing or high quality work. Invariably animated.
Jpg (or jpeg) is lossy and each time you open it - it can loose quality - never save anything as a jpg u want to use or keep - again the internet is about the only place that they're any use to you . You can get these large or small but are not for anywhere u need good quality images
Best files for pics that you may want to work with, print or have exceptional quality are Tiff's (or tif)

But Tiff's are hard to work with, as in if you dont happen to have a graphics editor or a paint program that supports saving Tiff's and editing them, you will have trouble. Also not all games, websites, or applications use Tiff... the most common used I seen are TGA, GIF, JPG, BMP, and PNG.
All low res file types useful for the internet
I was just saying (as someone who worked with graphics- tifs are best for xllnt quality

You know Exdeath? Your really becoming quite the arse. I asked for a simple answer, and you sit there mocking me, making exaggerations.

What kind of image did you test this with? PNG could be smaller with, say, a graphic intented to be used in Dink Smallwood, but between a high resolution photograph saved as a JPG with minimum compression, and a PNG saved with maximum compression, you'd be hard-pressed to get a result like that... The PNG should be several times the size of the JPG.

You can save a jpg to any resolution same as you can anything else - size (in this case lol) doesnt matter cause size = resolution, higher res is bigger file size
Doesnt matter if png, jpg whatever

Skorn, here's what you should do:
1.) Export all your graphics (I'm assuming you're using some 3D creation software?) to JPEG.
2.) Open any BMP from the original Dink Graphics.
3.) Copy one of your graphics onto the old one, and save it in a new place (ie. yourdmod/graphics/boobs)
4.) Repeat for all of the JPEGs you've exported.
5.) Add INI lines.

I do this: save important photos as .TIFF. Upload images as .JPG or .BMP. Save porn as .JPG. Edit Dink Graphics... they're always .BMP. Oh, and (Ed.) .GIF is good for pixel-art.
3D ... well, that really depends what you're doing with it, I mean, you can export stills/ single frames as .JPG or .BMP files, but that's not theoretically 3D anymore.

I wonder if there is software out there that emulates 3D by getting large amounts of high res images and whenever the user rotates or zooms the view, it gets the appropriate image? With rotation in all directions?
Not that this would be very practical unless you wanted a 3D view from a bunch of photos.

There are some files I seen before used for making smaller 3D Files, these images map coordantes and are used to render 3D objects, called "Baking" I go on a site called Second Life that uses this type of technology.

I did some testing with Photoshop, it seems to give a smaller filesize for PNG, and a larger filesize for JPG than IrfanView (which I used for comparison), but JPG is still much smaller. Photoshop doesn't really give me many options at all with PNGs, though, so if there's some way to get it to compress PNGs better, please do tell.
Use the Save for Web option and select PNG-24
but PNG-8 looks good too, but 24 maintains colors aspect and all

Sprite? You mean 3D model.
Don't export your 3D renders to JPG, it'll make them difficult to edit as JPG creates little compression artifacts in your graphics. For Dink, always save to BMP.
