I do this: save important photos as .TIFF. Upload images as .JPG or .BMP. Save porn as .JPG. Edit Dink Graphics... they're always .BMP. Oh, and (Ed.) .GIF is good for pixel-art.
3D ... well, that really depends what you're doing with it, I mean, you can export stills/ single frames as .JPG or .BMP files, but that's not theoretically 3D anymore.
