I did a test between file sizes and best quality and believe-it-or-not PNG was smaller in file size at a high resolution than a JPEG with low compression or nearly no compression.
What kind of image did you test this with? PNG could be smaller with, say, a graphic intented to be used in Dink Smallwood, but between a high resolution photograph saved as a JPG with minimum compression, and a PNG saved with maximum compression, you'd be hard-pressed to get a result like that... The PNG should be several times the size of the JPG.
