Giff is a small - low resolution file - useless for much of anything except internet - never used for printing or high quality work. Invariably animated.

Jpg (or jpeg) is lossy and each time you open it - it can loose quality - never save anything as a jpg u want to use or keep - again the internet is about the only place that they're any use to you . You can get these large or small but are not for anywhere u need good quality images

Best files for pics that you may want to work with, print or have exceptional quality are Tiff's (or tif)
