Will dink ever die?
I wonder, will Dink still exist in 2 years or so? I certainly hope so, but I fear most Dinkers will go eventually and play some *cough cough* mrrwnd or something...

People have been asking that question forever. Really, I remember discussions back in '98 and '99 where people were afraid Dink was going to die in the next year. I don't think anyone thought the community would be this active in 2002.
So: who knows. But as long as people keep visiting and making D-Mods, it'll stay alive.

I was a believer!
Anyway, you can't ever leave, I don't think we would survive without you..

Good for you!
But there will always be newcomers who'll eventually be veterans who then decide to do something else, but then there will already be other newbies who'll eventually be veterans who then decide to do something else, but then...
... and of course there will always be the 'hard core' who will be Dinkers for ever.

We are all Dink Junkies...We can't escape...I've tried God know how many times!
I think not!

actually, i was going to post something about that, a little idea i had, but i decided not to. now you have provoked me, and i shall!! hah!! bear my wrath...
OK, first, you should all probably agree that as a general rule, gam,es which an be modded are more likely to survive the long run, because the players can continually create new content?? I mean, look at counter-strike, half life, diabilo etc. etc. etc.
Now, i would put dinks existence up untill this point down to that fact. i mean, how many dmods are there?? hundreds, at least. many have not been released, many have not even been finished, but the fact that it is possable to make them has undoubtedly helped dink to survive to this day and age. In some respects, it is a wonder it has survived. look at games such as baldugs gate, which even today attracts a huge following. there are many mods for that too, but there ya go.
Now, having said all that, i still think dink will have trouble in the next 5 years time. what could be done? IM no so HO, ther is one "cure" which may still work. it's quite simple, simply release teh source!! before anyone slams me , i would point to blender. the blender scene has been all but dead for a number of years. now it has been converted to an open source project, and all of a sudden it is slowly gaining popularity, because:
1.- it's free
2.- it is able to compete with products which cost tens of thousands of dollars!
So yeah, I'm running out of steme here, btu don't you think that if we had the source, we could improve dink to the point where we could continue to exist for years to come? i can think of many improvments i would make, such as 32 bit colour, larger map support, mp3 and ogg vorbis support, etc. etc. etc. And any fears that thgis would fragment the community are (i believe) unfounded. look at other projects. the few who do "fork" the code never tend to go far (with a few notable exceptions of *BSD). sooo... whaddya think?? we should storm seths abode, grab his computer, grap the source, and split....
(this is the bit where you flame me, remember?? you know who you are )

You know, a few months ago those were my thoughts exactly: gimme the source.
Now it isn't. Seth has some very good reasons for not releasing the source... very, very good reasons.

: No, I didn't say that...
It's simply because he doesn't want to show people the horrible code, right?

No, it isn't just because of the horribleness of the code. That might be part of it... but that isn't the main reason.
And even if I did have inside information that Dink Smallwood 2 was, say, going to be released tomorrow at 4 p.m. PST, I wouldn't give any hints, or admit it...
Erm, yeah.

so tell us.. or are you not allowed to? there are several possabilities in my mind:
1.- there will be a sequel (very unlikely)
2.- he simply doesn't want to show people his code
3.- he is afraid of teh open source licenses (yes, there are people out there who still do not believe that it works)
4.- he has been brainwashed by evil aliens.
personally, I'm betting on a combo of 2 & 3...
