Edit:Whoops!

Wow! It certainly doesn't feel like a quarter past midnight. Anyways, for our summer reading this year we had to read one of several books. For student going into their junior year the choice of academic area to read in were Phisical Education (can't exactly bench press a book), Foreighn Language(Didn't include clasic fiction, just biographies for the most part), the Arts, or technology.

I chose my book from the tech list being a list comprised of non-fiction thrillers and sci-fi. Ender's Game was my choice.

I heard that it was a pretty good book from someone who read it. They were quite right. Ender's game was an excellent book, and i read it over the course of two days. I read the sequel, Speaker For the Dead in roughly a week, maybe less. It was as good if not better.

I started the next sequel Xenocide a while ago, but put it aside. I definately plan to get back to it later.

Any book recomendations? I'm thinking of readinf the Simarilion after i finish reading Lord of the Rings. I read the Hobbit and the Felloship of the Ring, but couldn't finish. I just couldn't continue reading the two towers. SPOILER! The Fellowship just ended at such a low point it was hard to keep reading.
"Ok they're chasing the Ur-Hakai. Still chasing them...Yeah Merry and Pippin are probably dead anyways." Its really hard to read a sequel when the previous book ends at such a sad place, and the next one starts there with out something to drawyou back into the book. "Well then Boromir's dead. Sam and Frodo ran off alone, Sam and Merry are held captives by a force of Orcs that does not need rest and runs faster than us with dwarf boy laggin' behind. Even if we catch them they'll probably be dead anyways. Lets do it!"

I can think of a few books you might like:

The Amulet Of Samarkand - it's basically a fantasy involving wizards and the like. You might just stop at that sentence, thinking it to be a generic magic story, but its plot is truly very unique. One of my favorites, this one.

Sabriel - Another fantasy. Its subject is witchcraft, but with a morbid twist. I would also suggest the two sequels to this, Lirael and Abhorsen

Life Of Pi - An intriguing fictional story about the life of a zookeeper. I'm still in the process of reading it, but from what I've seen so far, a great book

Inkheart...
The Ropemaker...
Firebirds...

These books are probably easy reading for a junior, but because I am probably one of the youngest members on this board, they are the only ones I can think of that I've recently read and enjoyed.

BTW, I suggest picking up Ender's Shadow, a "parallel" story to Ender's Game if you haven't done so already

The Amulet Of Samarkand = Harry Potter for the better class of wannabe-wizard.

Tis a good read anywho.

I would also recommend "The Chrysalids" by John Wyndham. Much better than that triffids malarky. Pfft.

A friend of mine seemed to enjoy the Icewind Dale books far more than he enjoyed LOTR. I've yet to touch them though.

I don't read a lot, really. But I'm currently in the (slow) process of reading Mercedes Lackey's Joust, which seems to be an intriguing tale about dragons and jousters who ride on said dragons. Yup yup.

And of course, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is always good.

Thanks guys! I've headr good things about the Hitchhiker series as well as the Icewind Dale trilogy and the other serieses that chronicle Drizzt by RA Salvatore. Thankyou for the other recomendations for books that i haven't for the most part heard of.

I was planning on reading Ender's Shadow after I finish Xenocide and Children of the Mind. I'm going to come back to the begining of the series and reading the sequels to Ender's Shadow. They are Shadow of the Hedgemon and Shadow Puppets.

The jungle is about the unsanitary conditions of the meat packing industry in the 1920's, right?

Oh wow this thread exploded...guess we all like to read.

Ya, the Hitchiker's series is hilarious.

Dont forget social issues science fiction like Farhenheit 451, The Giver, and Brave New World.

The Silmarillion is a collection of short stories that are too separated to make sense. Though the stories themselves may just be too complicated.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

D'oh... though I've yet to read Brave New World, I must agree that Fahrenheit 451 and The Giver are excellent books. 1984 is a very interesting read as well, as is Schindler's List. I could probably think of many great titles, but memory tends to fail me...

Animal Farm is great, especially since it applies so well today. (Example: Flag waving, patriotism and bullshoot about being against the soldiers is equal to the slogan "Four legs good, two legs bad.")

we did a class reading of the animal farm and even held a mock trial for our semester project at the end of the year in my english class. i was on the prosecuting attorney, as napoleon and squealer were being convicted of being directly responsible for the death of boxer(we won the case, yay). very interesting book.

Dude. fudge mock trials. I remember my freshman English class doing one of those for To Kill a Mockingbird, and noone was kind enough to explain to me what the hell I was supposed to be doing. So basically I stood in the front of the room and made a total ass of myself. It seemed to garner a few giggles, though, which is a plus.
