Rarely. So rarely, in fact, that I have to be taught a few things all over again every time I play.

Why might you ask... sweetie?

Odd... I never thought to ask you.

My friends and I are interested in learning to play D&D.

Everytime I want to get started with it, I realize I have to read the Player's Handbook and when I look at the size of the book, I put it back in the closet and start up my computer for a game of Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights (preferring the first).

I say Diablo II and Arcanum are better! (did you mean the computer game or the card game?)

I don't think Dungeons and Dragons is really a card game. I'm assuming you're refering to the classic pen and paper style. I've never played it myself, but I have a fairly good idea of how it's supposed to work.

Indeed, it's hardly a card game. All you need is a pen, a lot of paper, the handbooks if you don't know them by heart and a lot of imagination. There's one person, the dungeon master, who lays out the story for the player characters to live in and interact with. He also determines who the enmies will be, what level they are, which treasure you can find, how much something costs, etc...

Sounds stupid

Actually, I remember playing something similar back in the Junior High School cafeteria (6-8th grades, probably 11-14 years old, about 7 years ago). Anyway, it wasn't dungeony, it was all outer space and it sorta mimic-ed what I think of Masters of Orion (though I haven't played the game). Basically, there were different races and things, but there wasn't any rule book. It was All imagination and (maybe) paper. I don't remember too much, though I think I remembered that the 'Dungeon Master' (we didn't have a name for the guy in charge) handled all the rules and such.

Anyway, it was cool. I remember my plans for when I got to be the fellow in charge... I'd set it up so people who sacrificed things (i.e. candy) to me would then get special favors. I never got to implement my plans though, as another kid (Jason Brisco... maybe, he's the fellow who wedged himself into one of the desks with the hole in the back/bottom during the middle of a class, and had to be cut free, I think) said his dad would be pissed if he ever sacrificed anything to anyone, even in a game setting, because of the religious implications. I was quite disappointed. I don't remember if I ever got the chance to be in charge.

That's probably why you founded the DN, to be in charge. You may not know it yourself, but that must have been a traumatic experience

Ah, Master of Orion, the only stategy game I was ever awesome at. It was especially satisfying because all of my friends sucked at it. I wonder if I can do the same with the new one.

D&D is great! Card game? Hardly!
I haven't played it in a while, but Baldurs gate games are fab, as is NeverWinter Nights. The game itself is better in BG2, but NN has editing facilities so good it's unreal!

Great leapin' Kobold boogers, you've never heard of D&D?!

CS... I remember the old early Betas, when the terrorists and counterterrorists looked almost exactly alike, you had to manually bind your own commands, and the only available gun models were left-handed. Surprisingly, its no more enjoyable today than it was back then
