Epic News: Dink SmallWiki
Posted by Tal on Tuesday April 1st, at 11:16 AM
It was with great enthusiasm that I inherited the throne of the Dink Network from our former king redink1 several weeks ago. The two of us decided that I could maintain the site while redink1 pursues a deeper relationship with his Xbox 360, and I think we can all agree that the Dink Network is as busy as it's ever been. Unfortunately, few of you seem to understand life's other obligations I must satisfy before committing to Dink Network busywork, such as my Information Technology studies, my dishwashing duties, and my various romantic subplots. I am more than content with our Dink coverage ever since my banana-fisted rule was imposed, but some of you seek to squeeze more juice out of a dry banana, so to speak. This morning I came to a most wonderful conclusion:

Wiki. It's the only way.

Awaken my peasants, and embrace the glory that is Dink SmallWiki. Know that I am Tal, the eternal will of redink1, and that Dink SmallWiki has been created so that you can serve me.

I suggested the idea to both redink1 and Striker - what other staffers are relevant? - and we both agreed that this was a triumph. The Generation 9 architecture, which was the products of several years of unwilling labor and was only implemented recently, is simply not enough for the next logical step in Dink Smallwood fandom. This is inadequate. I have invested the remainder of redink1's life savings in new-fangled Wiki software that will allow us all to edit the various facets of the Dink Network as we see fit. For a preview of what's to come, click here. It's basically the same as what I'll be implementing soon, but with fewer Dink images and less potassium than the final product, obviously.

The following questions I asked myself during my sleep should help to illustrate the incredible power of Wiki:

Can you adjust DinkDude95's profile and portray him as an upstanding member of society?
YES

Can you modify my news posts and cripple my vocabulary even more than several years of drug and alcohol abuse already have?
SURE

Are our younger members able to finish the remainder of Generation 9 with the power of Wiki?
IF THEY MUST

Back from the Grave was never finished; can we fix it?
YES WE CAN

Does anyone care if we edit ABCDEFGH-I-GIVE-UP right out of existence?
NO

Is Dink SmallWiki the future?
NO, THE FUTURE IS OUTDATED

Don't think that you have free reign over every facet of Dink SmallWiki, though. There will still be godlike men (and only men) at the top of the food chain, and if it hasn't already become apparent, the power of Wiki is much stronger than I alone can handle. I have already appointed an Advisory Board that will ensure fair and rational use of all things Dink SmallWiki, and the members are as follows:

Tal - Like duh, I'm totally old enough for this.
Dukie - He's more productive than the rest of us.
Striker - He shall smote wrongdoers.
redink1 - VIP
John F. Kennedy - Diplomatic power will be served, primarily during our lunch buffet hours.
John Romero - Will make you all she dogs.
John Mellencamp - Completes the John trifecta, which is distinctly American.
DinkKiller - Fair representation is fair.

Applications for the Advisory Board may be submitted via the File Upload form and may be left pending indefinitely.

You may doubt my ability to implement such an ambitious upgrade to the Dink Network, but rest assured that Dink SmallWiki will be out of beta soon and that we're releasing on time! Dink SmallWiki will be implemented no later than April 1, 2009. I'm making a note here: "HUGE SUCCESS." As a result of the Dink SmallWiki upgrade, the Dink Network will be stronger than never, ever before.

In other news, we have reached an agreement with Valve Corporation to distribute their hit title Portal through the Dink Network. While it may not be entirely relevant to Dink Smallwood, I am of the opinion that you will all enjoy it thoroughly. Go here and look to the left. See? "Portal." Enjoy!

New D-Mod: Hide-n-Seek

The endy is here. Can you play Hide-n-Seek with MrNone staring at you with daggers of nothingness ready to summon desolation? I thought so.

New Dev File: Heavy Metal Midis
Posted by Striker on Saturday April 5th, at 01:41 AM
DinklyDDude95 recently submitted (and by recently, I mean within the past few months) a new midi pack called Heavy Metal Midis. Whether or not they are all actually quite metal enough to be considered heavy is something you'll have to find out for yourself.

New Dev File: Zach the Marine Extras
Posted by Striker on Saturday April 5th, at 01:51 AM
jakewedding has released his first file, a graphical add-on to Zach the Marine called, appropriately, zach the marine extras. It adds "new item picktures and new fireing graphicks" to the d-mod.

New Dev File: Jani the Ultimate Warrior graphics pack
Posted by Striker on Saturday April 5th, at 02:04 AM
Matias Kares (aka skull, aka Jameil, aka Dertin, aka Dertin2, aka Miguel Sanchez, aka Dr. Nguyen Van Falk) has put together some graphics you may want to use of Jani, the ultimate in ultimate stick warriors. Though, I would think that a certain distant cousin may dispute that claim.

To Decompile or Not to Decompile...
Posted by Striker on Saturday April 5th, at 02:36 AM
...that is the question of the hour.

As some of our community members know, it has been long debated in the community about whether or not the Dink Network should host programs that will decompile those precious .d and .ff files that modders... and cheaters are so eager to get at.

Back in "the before time"... the long, long ago, the venerable Gary Hertel asked us whether or not he should release his .d decompiler to the public. Eventually he decided that in the interest of the original authors protecting their work, his decompiler would remain hidden away. This rationale was adopted by the DN and, ever since, we have not hosted such files.

However, times and attitudes change... and such a tool would be quite valuable in unlocking the secrets of various d-mods, as well as for some of us who may have lost the original source to d-mods we stupidly decided hide behind compiled code.

What do you, as members of the Dink community think should be done? Should the status quo be maintained, or should we finally hand over these keys to doors intentionally locked by their authors?

Contest: Rise to Power D-Mod
Posted by SabreTrout on Wednesday April 9th, at 05:56 PM
Have you looked into creating a D-Mod, but can't really seem to get the ball rolling? Are you a seasoned D-Mod developer, but motivation is lacking?

Well, here's another contest to draw your attention.

For this D-Mod Contest, you must create a D-Mod involving the main character(s) rising to power in some way.

View the comments for more information.

The Rules

Deadline: All entries must arrive be uploaded via the Upload Form before July 20th, 2008.

Eligibility: All non-staff members can participate. Staff members may also participate in the contest, but they will not be able to vote or view the other entries before the rest of the community.

Voting: Voting will be conducted by eligible staff members during the month following the deadline.

Prize: The 1st placed entrant will receive a copy of the DinkC Reference book, not to mention bragging rights until the next contest rears its head.

If a group effort was involved in the creation of a winning D-Mod, only one prize will be awarded.

Specifications: These requirements must be followed in order to be eligible for the contest:

The D-Mod must be centered upon a playable character's rise to power. This ascension to greatness can be relative, however. Ethel's duck taking rule over Stonebrook would be just as valid as Dink becoming King.

The protagonist must succeed in rising to power. This may not necessarily be the end of the game, but their rise to power must be the central theme of the d-mod.

It is recommended that you create a typical RPG/Adventure-style D-Mod for the contest, though originality is an excellent way to set your d-mod apart.

Size: There are not any size limitations, either in map screens or file size. However, it is strongly recommended that entrants focus on making a quality D-Mod, rather than a larger quest of dubious worth.

Cancellation: Prizes will only be awarded if two authors / groups submit D-Mods for the contest. Also, Tal can cancel the contest at any time he pleases for any reason he chooses. The usurped King Daniel will be supplying the competition's prize.

Misc: If you have any questions, or think some of the rules are a bit silly, please post a comment or a message on the board.

Previously released D-Mods are not eligible, nor major parts of their map and/or story. For example, Sharp couldn't take Milder 3, make Milder become king of the universe, and submit it for the contest.

The staff decided on a "Rise to Power" theme to commemorate Tal's new found power.

If have been working on a D-Mod for a while that fits in the rules, please start a new one. Contest D-mods are a special breed, and if we find out you are submitting something you started last year, Duck Assassins will be sent for.

You can submit more than one entry. But beware: you may end up 'splitting the vote', and allowing another D-Mod to win.

Example

A lowly pig farmer comes to be head pig farmer of the multinational corporation, Pigs Inc. The methods used to do this are completely up to the player; do you make money and buy out the local farms? Or destroy the competition through underhand means?

Updated D-Mod: The Fall of Tahmar v1.5
Posted by Tal on Thursday April 10th, at 10:37 AM
If your subservient community hasn't granted you a new D-Mod to play, why not revisit an old favorite? One-Mod Wonder Marpro has updated The Fall of Tahmar, which took second place in the Failure D-Mod Contest late in 2006 (which I apparently didn't vote in... chances are I was being whipped at the time). Marpro boasts that the new version 1.5 not only fixes bugs, but also includes a new area, more secrets, more dialog, and a freshly-recooked scent, among other things. Chances are I completely missed out on the original, but I'm interested in seeing how the updated release fares.

New D-Mod: Bug Mania
Posted by Tal on Thursday April 10th, at 10:50 AM
Sparrowhawk, my partner in the crusade against gluten, has issued a standalone release of his Bug Mania project, which apparently comes to version 2.00 now. I almost missed this, but apparently Bug Mania's first incarnation surfaced as a part of the One Screen D-Mod Compilation that surfaced in October.

I haven't tried either version, but apparently Bug Mania involves whacking bugs with a hammer. Why don't you give it a shot and pen up a review?

Updated D-mod: Tears of the Devil v0.05 Beta
Posted by Striker on Saturday April 12th, at 12:30 AM
After almost a year, Merder has finally updated his demo of Tears of the Devil to v0.05. It stars two white-haired metrosexuals who spend over half the game beating things senseless in cutscenes and has an install time that lasts over 20 minutes on a PS3... or I could just be thinking of another game that involves the devil and crying.
