Sparrowhawk, in case you answered me once before, I missed it... but this is a good thread to repeat the question. Are you named after Ged in Earthsea?

I've liked Robin Hobb's books (especially the Liveship Traders series, for the most charismatic pirate king Kennit), Jean Auel's Earth's Children series (for her amazing - at least apparent - accuracy on the prehistoric era), the Earthsea series and LeGuin's other scifi books. I just recently re-read Lathe of Heaven and it was a brilliant depiction of how having the means doesn't secure the end.

As for more realistic writing, I love Trotsky's My Life - An Attempt at an Autobiography. Fiction - Alexandre Dumas is quite interesting (The Three Musketeers, its sequels + other works on the French monarchy).

And for its pure entertainment (and endurance) value, I give you one name: Margit Sandemo. Some you who are from Norway, Sweden or Finland might know what I'm talking about.

I must have missed the question. It's more after the bird, but Ged does come into it a bit

Your mentioning Trotsky reminded me, I've also read and enjoyed a couple of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's books, namely Crime & Punishment and Devils.

Goosebumps, hmmm, I don't really like them, but that's just my opinion.

I like Bill Myers books, especially the My Life As... series staring the one and only ... Wally McDoogle! Bill Myers writes some pretty funny books. I also like some of the older books like The Secret Seven, James Budd, The Fantastic Five etc.

Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien........................................................................................

And that's about it. I don't read a whole lot of books, though I don't dislike reading a good book at all.
(Besides, those series of books I mentioned are HUGE.)

Yeah, the Lord of the Rings are good, I forgot about them. But just recently i've started reading Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events books.

Seems like no teen literature comes out without a hint of magic these days. Is Potter to blame? I can't say that I would totally object to fantasy literature, but it used to be a genre, not the only thing in existence...

Lemony Snicket, then those velvet-covered books, and there's a lot more I can't think of... I wonder if they're good or just riding on the Potter wave?

I dunno, Niven is still quite good, although that's tech, not magic. At lot of the works. I
m currently reading House of Leaves, but I don't think anyone could call that 'Teen' fiction, considering it's the most difficult book I've ever attempted to read.

Teen fiction has had elements of the supernatural in it for a long time, heck, look at Lovecraft or 'The dark is rising' saga. There is future sci-fi being published today, but that is also like magic, so you may not agree.

I can't tell you how often in the past year I've picked up a book that looked like a decent war novel, yet it turns out to be based on Al Qaeda or something equally inane.

I remember, a very long time ago, there being books like Heidi, Animals of the Farthing Wood, Anne of Green Gables or The Famous Five. I can't really say what's so wrong with this sort of realistic fiction. Not magical enough? No sex? No sleepovers or pop music references or crushes on cute guys?

I read those as a preteen, I turned out OK... now all you get is kids who turn into various animals. Oh, I feel like such a moralist, I'm loving this

EDIT: I may have to take some of that back. I just went and read the list of Newbery Medal winning books from 1922 to date... it seems that fantasy was at its peak in 1970-1990 and after that, close to none have been nominated for the award? Or, the quality of fantasy books just plunged after that, I don't know. But in any case they seem to publish other than fantasy these days still. (Well, whaddayaknow)

Farthing Wood and The Famous Five used to be some of my favourite books

Swallows and Amazons are also childrens books I suppose, but they are still big favourites.

I like fantasy but it can be hard to find books I really enjoy. A lot of the teen books are badly written (Shadowmancer - ugh) or too young a style for me and lots of the adult books, as well as being badly written , go over the top on the adult content.
The Neverending Story is good, that's fantasy and quite an old book I think.

Don't forget the boxcar children novels. Although, after 35, (some would say 10) they started going really downhill.

I also liked the first book in the riverworld saga, and want to get the other two.

I thought there were five Riverworld books?

From what I can remember (I read them back-to-back over the span of a couple weeks quite some time ago), the series does start out quite strong, but then things start to get really wacky and odd. I think at one point the characters from Alice in Wonderland are brought to life, and go on a rampage killing people.

I just love The Secret Seven, The famous Five and all those types of books. So what if they contain no sex or adult content. That sort of stuff just ruins a book completely.

If you wanted to sound a bit more adult about this, you might acquire a less fervent attitude... It certainly isn't essential for a book to have adult content, or for a game, but considering the fact that it appears in books/movies/games rather often - might not totally ruin everything after all.

I wasn't exactly trying to sound adult... but anyway...

It's just that there's fewer and fewer G games coming out these days. They've all got some sort of adult content, or blood and gore. I mean, it's hard to find a good game these days!

the same here... I look up the supermarket's game shelves and what do I see?

3+: Too childish games (neutral ones with no specific violence nor childish content should be here)
7+: Wtf I can hardly find any??
12+: Same as above...
16+: Boring and meaningless splatter games.
18+: Duh it's illegal...

I got 150 € for my services in the cowbarn (look on the "vacation" thread, too lazy to post a link) but I can't buy any games with it!

Mild "adult" content is fine as long as it's absolutely necessary, not just because it looks cool, not just because of "itself".

Making a game 3+ might even be a more efficient means for preventing preteens from playing them than making them 16+.

Hmm, you might have a point there (although I imagine it's much worse with games than it is with books). I can't think of much other than solitaire (and the likes) or a rally game..

I guess part of the problem is that a quality game has to make much more money to cover for its costs - and you can't sell by saying "Well we got this great storyline". Instead, you stick big guns (and big guns) in the game box and it'll sell like never seen before.

EDIT: I came up with sports games, too. But it's not that weird after all - what more is there to human life than more or less meaningless competition in sports or warfare, friendship and love, and the occasional sexual content? Little (except for watching movies or playing games)

Just last night, my Dad and I were looking through Video Ezy trying to find a video suitable for the ounger ones, there were like, 5 videos we saw that weren't rated M MA15+ or R18+!! And we'd watched them all! I just kept seeing ratings with words next to them saying 'Mainly centered around sex' and 'nudity' 'high drug use' 'High level frequent course language' we eventually found one which only had 'mild crude humour' and 'low level violence' which was good.

EDIT: My PC stuffed up. Double post accident.
