I remember, a very long time ago, there being books like Heidi, Animals of the Farthing Wood, Anne of Green Gables or The Famous Five. I can't really say what's so wrong with this sort of realistic fiction. Not magical enough? No sex? No sleepovers or pop music references or crushes on cute guys?

I read those as a preteen, I turned out OK... now all you get is kids who turn into various animals. Oh, I feel like such a moralist, I'm loving this

EDIT: I may have to take some of that back. I just went and read the list of Newbery Medal winning books from 1922 to date... it seems that fantasy was at its peak in 1970-1990 and after that, close to none have been nominated for the award? Or, the quality of fantasy books just plunged after that, I don't know. But in any case they seem to publish other than fantasy these days still. (Well, whaddayaknow)
