How To Start Creating D-Mods
First, go to C:\Program Files\Dink Smallwood\develop and look through the provided tutorials that come with the game. That will get you started.
You'll probably want to use a D-Mod skeleton, like Skeleton B. This works as a 'blank' D-Mod that you'll add a map, scripts, sounds, etc. to.
Tutorials
The Rudiments of Scripting is a rather good tutorial for learning how to script.
There are several Video Tutorials available (scroll down to the bottom of the page). These are videos that allow you to watch a D-Mod being created.
Tools
WinDinkedit is another map editor that works quite well. Some people still prefer Dinkedit, though.
You might want to try Easy DinkC, which is supposed to be easy to use. I haven't used it much myself, though.
Good luck!

This thread has some useful links to new sprites and music for your dmod.
Here's another thread with music links.
Here's another thread with music links.
Good idea with this topic redink1.Maybe i should create some d-mod(Hmmm maybe later cuz i'm so lazzzy!)
But rather don't, because it only contains music from existing games. If you want to be more original, make your own music, download the 374 MIDIs pack on this site, or Google for some game-compatible MIDIs.
True, DaVince. I don't know how to make own midis, what program to use and such. Could you make a link?
Actually, a good idea is to try to go for midis from obscure games or check out the "Newly Submitted Files". I've found some really good stuff that never got posted to the main database there.
when i use ´the dink tutorial it says that i must copy start-c1 file to story dir.
but i only found story-d1 not c1 what do i do and how do i edit on it
anyway thanks

Take a look in the source.zip file in the develop directory, it has all the source code of the original game; you can find the start-*.c files in there.
Or you could download WinDinkEdit. It comes with a skeleton Dmod. It comes with a basic screen all the start main scripts. It also explains how to change the stuff. It also comes with an extra tile. (TS34) and it has all the stuff you need. Like the map.dat (That's cause of the basic screen) and the dink.dat dink.ini all that stuff. WinDinkEdit is also really good. Has a bunch of extra features and you can use the mouse and it's much easier to use. If you don't want it though, download Skeleton B in the development part of the Dink Network.
thank you now i just need to know how to fire up the game to test my d-mod
it is a little advanced in the tut
dink- game...
i does'nt understand

Use DFArc, the thing you also use to run D-Mods.
i did!
but i could not find it using dfarc
it is not a dmod file it is a dir.
i just need to know how to make it a dmod file
it is all prepared

DFArc unzips the .dmod file into a directory such as you have made.
You may want to create a dmod.diz file, right where dink.ini and such are.

nevermind i've figured it out now thank you magicman you have been a great help
I tried to edit start-1.c file, but I only see this:

then you should download a skeleton go to top of page it has all the things you need to ¨create a d-mod and the start 1c. file is in an other format
(alot easier to edit if you ask me)
(alot easier to edit if you ask me)
That's probably a .d file, which accidentally was renamed to a .c file somehow. Look for an actual .c file somewhere (like dinkomatic said).
Just download WinDinkEdit. It comes with a skeleton Dmod. (All the nessesities) and it's much easier to use. Then you don't need to post stuff asking help! Believe me...
In the tutorial, there is instructions to made a talking tree and I do it and when I try it, it wouldn't work. Tree doesn't say Ouch! and it doesn't talk. What's the problem?
did you write it exact correct
oh?
there is an error in the tut. when you have to write the void hit(void) scipt you will find ` jump over that and just write everything else

I had the exact same problem juhis. You see, in the tutorial when you make the tree say ouch, it will have something like say("`4Ouch!", current_sprite); And no I didn't miss out the & by accident. That's exactly what it says. I was coppying and pasting trying to figure out what was wrong. But I couldn't get it. Then I got my Dad to have a look. He looked at when the tree said something else and saw that the other thing had s
ay_stop("`4Thankyou human", ¤t_sprite); He noticed that that one had a & before the current_sprite); so he said is there meant to be a little symbol thingy there. And I said, OOOOHHHH! Thanks Dad! And it worked. When you have another sprite talking you always put ¤t_sprite); not current_sprite); cause it won't work. You gotta put &. I hope that helped. By the way, there are many good tutorials here on the Dink Network. You may want to check them out!
P.S. If anyone makes another version of the original Dink Smallwood make sure you fix up that tutorial. And maybe add another one in there.

I saw that before I put my message here, but I try to find the problem myself, It's the best way but thanks anyway
Dinkdude95: P.S. .....
yeah it freaked me out when i used the windinkedit
is'nt there any up to date tutorial and script lists in here because the (dinkedit) tutoiral is hard to understand if you are running windinkedit and at the same time are a n00b.
AND!! i also have a question: is it o.k. to download the graphics in here and use them to my own mods. if so, do i then have to credit all the authors (that could be pretty long)
and at last i need some more script variables it is really paining me that i can't do anything that (say...) when i hit and say (followed the tut)

Check out The Rudiments Of Scripting Like Redink1 said.
And yes it is OK to download the graphics here. And you should credit the Renderers or whatever of the graphics or you may make them cry! (Just Kidding) Usually making credits are fun! But that's just my opinion. I reckon it's one of the best bits!
If you want I could email you or post a bunch of stuff here about using WinDinkEdit. But it would be better if in the search box (To the right of the screen on this web site) Type in 'Tutorials on using WinDinkEdit' It will come up with google, but it should all be Dink Network stuff.
And also like Redink1 said there are about three video tutorials on how to use WinDinkEdit. (I planned on making one myself but gave up) Go to the Development page and I think it's on the 4th or 5th page down the very bottom there should be three video tutorials. You may have to go to the next page to see them all.
If you need anything else don't hesitate to ask!

Make sure your Dmod's directory is 8 characters or shorter and doesn't contain special characters (like .'").
I don't really have a solution but... are you using a frontend? eg. DFarc2
