The Evil Guys
OK, this is pretty similar to a question Arik asked prior to the release of Cloud Castle, but I think that with the many new faces, as well as changing opinions, it is fine to ask it again.
How do you like your difficulty? Should you die often? At all? Maybe you should just get beat up a lot? Different people seem to like different challenges. What do you prefer, masses of enemies, or fewer, tougher ones?
As for bosses, should you be mangling your keyboad in frustration as you get battered for the 5th time? Or should you be taking him down with aplomb?
What do YOU think?

As usual, somewhere in between. Not too many monsters, a slight difficulty curve, later on some super hard monsters, bosses should be beatable, but not easy... Uhm. yeah. Oh. You SHOULD die at times. Or else the game's too easy. Unless you're making a romp, that is.
I like the idea of a dmod in which you don't have to do things in a specific order, but you won't be strong enough to finish if you are too weak, or don't have enough of the right items/magic.
Personally, I think the original Dink had a pretty good method of distributing monsters. In the beginning, you encounter just pillbugs, and then pillbugs and boncas, and then pillbugs and boncas and purple boncas... etc, etc, building up the difficulty level of the newly introduced monsters while still having the old, easier to kill monsters around to help you build up experience or kill to get a heart and heal yourself.
Bosses should be *hard*. I think the best gaming experience I've ever had was dying fifteen times in attempt to beat one of the bosses in Final Fantasy X. It's frustrating, but when you finally beat it, it makes that boss that much more important to the story or whatever.

So, I'll make the bosses harder thatn in Cloud Castle then. Any complaints, send to Alli.

Those bosses could be really hard on FFX. Never finished it though, because even though I was near or at the final battle(i'm not quite sure), I overwrote the file with another save game. I also don't own the game, I just rented it 4 times.
How'd you do that, alli? *heh* I'm very near the end, and I haven't died on a boss more than twice throughout the game. I've also seen a friend of mine beat the final boss, and that didn't seem hard either. Oh, and I'm not critizising you, just wondering how, and well... which boss?
My name isn't alli, but I never really played rpgs very much until FFX. So I sucked at those. Even though I've been playing Warcraft/Starcraft games since 1997, I still suck at them, so I should probably just stick to wrestling and hockey games.
Two reasons: first, I had never played a turn-based combat RPG before. Second, I didn't really take a whole lot of time to level my party up very well, and thus was pretty weak.
And it was Seymour and Mortichrois or whatever (the 3rd reincarnation of Seymour, you know, the one you fight on Mt. Gagazet).
And the final boss(es) are pansies. *giggle*

i have accumulated about 40 hours playing blitzball and about 20 hours actually leveling up. im right at the end of the game and i cant kill that last boss. (i actually have 63 hours accumulated
) afterplaying 40 hours of blitzball in a couple of months, i win every game by like 20 points lol...

I prefer not to die very often. I really don't like the whole save-reload thing too much. Personally, I think if a person doesn't at least have a chnace at getting through a situation the first time they encounter it, it's too hard.
I donno if that sounds shocking to some people, but like I said, I don't like reloading repeatedly, I don't feel like a hero, just a bored Immortal.

I know EXACTLY what you mean Paul! Though I can put up with dying a couple of times at a VERY hard boss, once i die 3 times or more, I start getting quite irritated, which leads to yet another hernia.

are you sure a hernia is entirely correct? maybe a blood vessel will explode in your head and fall over and die, but a hernia just doesnt sound right!
You get hernias, I get migraines.
I prefer not to die a lot, too. Once I fought an end boss that kept zinging me with magic that I found no way to dodge. Eventually I just gave up and never finished the game.
I also prefer fewer, tougher bosses. Sometimes with a large number of enemies, with the only difficulty factor being their sheer number, the ol' attack-retreat-wait, attack-retreat-wait strategy gets a little boring.

Yah, they should make a boss that makes you do a Simon Says type of repetion game in order to beat him(or her). Either that or program a small version of Arkanoid into the game that you have to beat, kind of like in Donkey Kong 64 with the original Donkey Kong in it.
Well.. I don't really get a hernia, it was a brilliant piece of trickery on my part! Aha!!
Arcadey things are good for bosses, but can be pretty dang hard to do. Or to do WELL at any rate.

I think you shouldn't worry too much about what we want in terms of difficulty. There are many people who never post on this board and still download d-mods. You'll never get a right view of what the community wants. Make the best game you can make and adjust the difficulty to what you would like in a game. That counts for every other aspect as well. If you like it, there's usually not a reason for other people to hate it, since you're a gamer too.
And people, FFX had the easiest boss battles EVER to star in a FF-game.

Fair point Kyle, but let's not forget how many complained about the difficulty in "Cloud Castle"!

Hey, wait a minute Sabre Trout. I'm just reading this thread cuz my comp. was on the blitz so This really kinda late. Alli says she was killed 15 times but then later she says she hadn't worked up her strenght stats much so maybe you shouldn't make them awfully hard.
...15 x... Wow...too hard for me.

I like easy bosses. If I die, say, 5 times when trying to kill a boss, I get pissed and don't play the dmod for a week. After that (usually) I'll kill the boss without getting killed even once.
I prefer lots of small weak creatures, a feiw tough ones among them, several easy minor level or area bosses, and a single realy tough game boss. Kind of like in FFX exept with easier minor bosses(snicker).
