Two reasons: first, I had never played a turn-based combat RPG before. Second, I didn't really take a whole lot of time to level my party up very well, and thus was pretty weak.
And it was Seymour and Mortichrois or whatever (the 3rd reincarnation of Seymour, you know, the one you fight on Mt. Gagazet).
