Petition to release Dink on Steam
I've had enough of this and you have too. You're sick of looking at Dink and seeing what it is but not what it CAN be. You want a change, and you want it now. I hear you, that's why I propose that Seth releases Dink on Steam. We need a serious discussion about this. Here's the main reasons Dink should be released on Steam:
1. Dink is a great RPG, and released for free on Steam means it'll easily become popular because you've got a great game for free. It would become among the most popular free games. And if a few months were spent modernizing the engine (supporting modern resolutions, etc.) then it would be even better. I know it would require pretty much rebuilding everything but just think of the result.
2. Workshop: Not only do you have a great free RPG, but people can make their own aswell! And this might not be a big deal, but this is what a lot of devs still haven't figured out and that is that MODS SELL GAMES. People don't buy Skyrim only for the vanilla game, they buy it because there's literally tens of thousands of mods which literally transform the game into something else. And in Dink's case, you literally get MORE GAMES. AND YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN.
3.Donation: Dink gets popular, Seth could set up a Patreon, he could even build a team. There's many able individuals in the dink community who do music, 2d and 3d art (like me), etc. We could do a proper Dink sequel, maybe 3D.
Now, obviously, it depends on Seth. He probably doesn't even want to do anything big anymore. But it's nice to look at what Dink could very realistically be. Nothing will come out of this probably, but I want to know your opinions.

i, the entirety of the dink network, sign this.
i have been trying to get this across to seth . red since 2011 no change in their thoughts on this
I'm gonna keep bumping this thread to the top until seth sees this.
@Bluedy:

Understand that (according to liquid141) Seth has responded to this matter before and seems to not be interested. That being said, he does not even "show his face" here on the Dink Network Forum very often. Perhaps you can try to reach him using some other method, such as @rtsoft on twitter or Seth on https://www.rtsoft.com/forums/ ?

Yeah I sent him an email once about releasing the dink models but he didn't want to.
Fyi the response from seth to my question is here

I dont think he has changed his stance still

I know we're not entitled to anything, but as a community who has supported and is still supporting this frankly dead game I think we deserve a more detailed explanation as to why Seth doesn't want to put Dink on GOG/Steam and why he won't release the 3d models if he doesn't have any plans for them. Not something that can be summarized as "Uh yeah I just don't want to."
honestly, we should just own the damn resources after all this time. seth does jack and shit with dink, has no interest in doing anything with the models or the rights...and yet, is hoarding them mercilessly when there is someone who does want to do something with them and can see the potential for what could be done with them.
it's pretty idiotic, really.
it's pretty idiotic, really.
I'm drunk atm, so don't take anything I say for granted. BUT if I recall correctly, couldn't you put FreeDink on Steam, regardless of what Seth thinks about it? Obviously someone else would need to take care of maintaining it, answering people's complaints, etc. But Seth has shown pretty strong disinterest in putting Dink on those platforms and the hassle involved with that, so if you want to see Dink on Steam/GOG, it seems like the logical approach.
i remember seth saying that we can sell dmods and that we can put dink up on steam, but it can't be under the original name.
but, i wonder...since there's already morons selling freedink on ebay, shouldn't that mean we're good to stick it on steam for free? if we still can't use the original name, the repo available on steam could just be called freedink

One question still remains. Who will upload it to Steam and manage it?
You're the man for the job, Bluedy.
@Skurn
since there's already morons selling freedink on ebay
I beg your pardon, but we are the only morons here. We could be making a lot of money, women and duckcrap by selling dmods on steam
Plus, we get a real initiative to make more content.

alright, beuc. let's hear it.
freedink on steam. whaddyathink
freedink on steam. whaddyathink
There can be multiple devs on a steam game anyways. beuc could be the programmer, i could be like the community manager. some extra people doing extra stuff, etc. and thats how the community supports the game on steam. our team could be "DinkNetworkSoft" or "DinkSoft"
i doubt beuc will be active any more here , free dink release will be awol without him
We can't release freedink on steam without him, it would feel wrong. At the very least we need him just to be there and credit him as the developer when it releases
yeah we can stick him in the list of team members at least, as dev. however thats done. dunno if he's got a steam account tho
could be like:
RTSoft: original dev
Beuc: sourceport dev
Bluedy: pre-school staff
Spook Rooster: chipped in 1 dollar to get freedink up

@all:
I'd say that it is the case that Seth and Beuc have (for the most part) washed their hands of all things Dink at this point.
Seth has certainly given a great deal to the DN over the years, including the "new" HD versions of Dink that ended up on multiple platforms.
Buec has certainly "payed his dues" by supporting freedink for years.
But, I think our time would be better spent making more dmods (while there exists the platform support that still makes that possible) than it would be spent trying to convince either Buec or Seth that they should do more for Dink than they already have (in terms of new versions and new platforms).

the time for dmods is over in this place. anyone can see that.
its time for the game to evolve and modernize like the rest of anyone smart would let it, and put the ducking thing out there for people to try.
seth is a goddamn idiot.

i think it would be a waste of time trying to make dmods for just the 10 of us whos active, with a release like steam / gog , you get fresh blood , new audience , new requests , new ideas.
I think seth / redink fears that this forum will die on such a release is false, look at aoe 2 , forgotten empires / aok forums pushed for its modern release , yet even today their own forums are more active than ever, heck even ms made aoe official website forums thrives along with the discord, reddit despite steam having specific game discussion place.
i really hope we get together and take dink into the modern era, would certainly want more people to discover the lovely dmomds here , read up on great contributions made by people like coco

the upside is steam's forums are garbage. so people'd probably pick this one anyways, especially considering the amount of stuff that would be here over what would be on steam. shit like the windinkedits, aural+, source code, graphics packs, utilities. all that kinda shit.
Joking aside:
with a release like steam / gog , you get fresh blood , new audience
Many old games don't age well because of their presentation and gameplay (everything is much faster now, for those with low attention span), and in Dink, you pretty much just have to wander around and figure stuff out yourself.
look at aoe 2
AOE 2 is a great game developed by Microsoft with a great, 0 effort learning tool for making scenarios, missions, campaigns... Dink on the other hand, is a half-assed indie game that got attention of a few talented people. How many dmods would be made if it weren't for WinDinkEdit+, sparrowhawk's file for notepad++ etc. I still remember when I made my first attempt to write a script in regular notepad. Brrr. I can only imagine (actually, I cant't) the amount of effort of the first guys here trying to make some modifications.
great contributions made by people like coco
If the game is half-assed, than my dmod is quarter-assed.

This gives me an idea. <light bulb flashes> Change the combat system! The combat system in most dmods made are derived from the vanilla game. I saw some websites where DS can be downloaded, while reading the download comments, I encountered a post that said "the combat was so ducking simple". That could be a downfall factor of Dink's gameplay chemistry. Ive played a few of isometric zelda-like RPGs and dink's combat system was quite tasteless, I admit. And yes, everything is fast-paced right now and adaptable by the majority of the gamers (or let's say, less-intellected animals).
Besides, there are probably millions of possibilities and purposes of the dink engine. Maybe I'll be able to make an improved and sensational combat system in the near (just near enough) future.
Edit:
My frickin idea is 1/8th of an ass.

I assume when you say "just the 10 of us whos active" that you are exaggerating for colorful effect, right?
Go to https://www.dinknetwork.com/files/category_dmod/sort_date-desc/ and take a look at how many downloads there have been for the most recent dmods. It's a big world out there and while Dink is not truly popular, there clearly IS an (admittedly tiny on a global scale) audience that is downloading dmods. While the heyday of dmods has passed us by, I do not agree with statements like "the time for dmods is over in this place".
Now, I do not OPPOSE the efforts to move Dink to another platform and/or to modernize it. I just think that such efforts will not work out and are therefore not worth the time to pursue them. But, go ahead and prove me wrong. If Dink is "released on Steam" or some other platform or if Dink's combat system is improved, or somehow Dink supports 3D (better than the current isometric projection method of simulating 3D) then I will applaud as loudly as any of us here on the DN, especially if (somehow) the old dmods and resources continue to be supported.

what are you talking about? morons out there love to point out games with waypoints hold your hands and that they're for babies. people who think no direction = super hard game will feel right at home in their idiocy
then we make a bonus version: the prepare to die edition where everything in the game has had its stats ramped up to an insane degree, give weapons stat requirements so you can never use them, and put a bunch of scripts in each game to simulate lag when an enemy attacks, while also giving enemies with hitframes a much wider box. the other subset of morons out there that think a broken game = hard will eat it up as well.

I think dink is perfect as is , surely we can add in stuff like leaderboards , achievements and what not but i think the game stands the test of time well , its simple gameplay and humor shines above else.
@slipdink Download numbers on dmods, not to be offensive but i alone have downloaded some of the dmods more than 30 times in particular over the years its not a really a unique number to show off, Also 10 active members is a pun / OR IS IT ? Also i have seen your efforts to boost up people to work on their dmods but without a positive future for dink its a lost cause.
To be on the topic i was always hoping on beuc to push free dink to steam and other port, personally devastated that hes left maintaining free dink even the website reflects that now :\
https://www.gnu.org/software/freedink/credits its awol now

Having a talk with beuc before you do it may be the right thing to do since even if putting it up is legal, he made the dang thing, I dunno.
we need to pay money to put it on steam. a pretty hefty amount i believe
we need a "put dink on ducking steam finally" fund
It just breaks my heart , one of the best ports of dink and i have been seeing this pages for weeks

that first line .... its current un-maintained for how long ? do they delete the software of gnu if no one steps up

It seems to me that you have declared the patient deceased before checking his pulse. Yes, the future does not look as good as the glorious past, when the site was more active and there were more active members of the DN and there was a heyday of dmod production, as well as an active maintenance of various forms of the Dink engine.
But guess what? It still works! Maybe we should stop worrying about the fact that the site will die someday and instead enjoy the fact that it is still alive and dmods can still be played.
It is not uncommon for some programs to be written years ago and still be executable on modern platforms. Such IS the case now for several versions of the Dink Engine and such is the case for the Dink Engine into the foreseeable future. Things might still "get better". Where there is life, there is hope. Don't forget the web versions of Dink... they can go on for quite some time even if future operating systems don't support a version of the Dink engine more directly.
Enjoy life while you can Skurn, it is short. Stop fretting about the ugly future. If you cannot do so, then please leave. You will be missed (really!), I can assure you, but at present, this kind of moping about the "awful" future can only drive others away.

The problem with your logic @slipdink is that why should we roll over and let dink rot away slowly? We should make sure that for at least in the future dink should be available , to anyone.
Pretty strange you are asking skurn to leave because he feels this way ? i think you should take it else where there is happy sunshine everywhere , flowers blooming and a website where you can pester everyone in their threads asking about their dmod updates everyday. We choose to see the reality.
Sure today this site is running but its running due to the strong will and dedication of one person alone, We humans are not the masters of how long things will stay. By putting up dink in other places , we can ensure dink will go on , long after we are all gone.
We all have seen what happened to freedink , yes it was mainly handled by one person beuc till now and now ? There is not a single peep update about whos going to handle it now.
Seth knows what could keep dink growing again , redink knows it as well , the community knows it , This thread says what can be done to make dink truly alive again.
I can understand your enthusiasm now , but when you are around like us for 10 plus years , say in 2029, would you be ok with dink being stuck here among the 10 of us for another 10 years ??
You should go through cocomonkey's thread to see how much passion people have for dink.
Its a disgrace to the legacy of dink if you think it should stay as it is just because everything is still running and not let someone else outside this community a chance to try out the game and enjoy it.

nah just give up on this game. it's not ever going to be modernized.
may as well go ahead and delete the site too

Yeah this community is pretty dead. The discord is pretty active among the 5-6 of us, but believe me when I tell you we discuss anything but dink. In fact, it's slowly turning into a Morrowind server. It looks like Seth is set on killing this game and the community too. And it's probably this complete lack of interest that will drive away the minority of the Dink community that is still here. Just don't blame the ones who actually tried to change something when you come on this forum 10 years from now and see "last post x years ago".
hell, the last post will probably be someone talkin about putting freedink on steam/gog/stupiddesktopclient.exe

I actually find the community itself not being keen to actually bloody provide any kind of improvement to the game itself or new features for a long darn time to be blamed. Just sticking to the old ways like a bunch of purists, meanwhile Doom community thrives and keeps on being improved, heck GZDoom now has it's own coding called ZScript which seems to be more efficient and advanced compared to the old one.
The only project that actually provided some improvement from the community is FreeDink, granted there is also Dink Smallwood HD and got a PNG support recently, but the problem is nobody even bothered to make a map editor or even use Windinkedit's source code to implement that.
In fact every time something good comes up, like for example tracker music support, nobody made a DMOD that uses it.

That's not a very good example. Doom is considered a classic and has a cult following. It's so popular in fact that it's got it's own remaster that was nominated for GOTY. Dink ISN'T considered a classic. It's anything but that. The Dink community is a dust particle compared to the doom community in terms of size. And that goes back to the problem me and many other people have and have discussed in this thread, the fact that Dink's release on a popular platform would bring in the people which would, as you said, bother to make a map editor or use windinkedit's source to implement that. You can't expect to find able and willing programers in the 10 people that are still active in this community.
And Seth has his fair share of fault. Mainly abandoning the game and the community, announcing he would repair DinkHD and abandoning in the process.
So when you blame the community for being lazy, do it when there actually is one, because 10 people is far from a community.

Dink still kinda has a lost treasure following , i can bet you that if there was news that dink will release on steam/gog , it would be a news article in a lot of websites
i know there's a bunch of users on gog who want to see it released there. there are also way more downloaders than there are posters.
do we reach out to them? nope.

Yeah. I'm imagining it already. Seth, sitting in the cozy chair next to a fireplace, smoking fat cigarillo, sipping something expensive, while 2 virgins massage him. I wonder how can I deteriorate the state of that lunatic community even further...
Please...
@Skurn
do we reach out to them? nope.

Yeah. I'm imagining it already. Seth, sitting in the cozy chair next to a fireplace, smoking fat cigarillo, sipping something expensive, while 2 virgins massage him. I wonder how can I deteriorate the state of that lunatic community even further...

@Bluedy
Would you waste your time on keeping 20+ yrs old project alive just to satisfy a bunch of freaks out there who really like it? Personally, I wouldn't. It is amazing that we even got DinkHD. If you want to keep it alive, and attract new people, that will require some effort on our part. We already got plenty of material to show off. Even so, I barely have time to play dmods (or any other game really), let alone take initiative to make one.

No, but the least I could do is tie loose ends and put it on steam. THEN I'd abandon it.

Just a reminder, Seth left 2 source codes for us. For the original game and the HD one, so we can make source ports out of them.
So far only Beuc made FreeDink from the original, just remember.......he is looking for a maintainer who would keep it updated and perhaps even bring something new.
Funny enough, just now the community of Warsow (a FOSS FPS game) had enough of the dev not putting the game on Steam (But putted on GOG anyways!) so they've decided to fork it, rename it to Warfork and provide some changes along with removing non-free assets in favour of public domain ones and it is coming to Steam. Warsow is a game that currently no one bloody played.

Another free game i remember SWINE , is out on steam/gog as SWINE HD remaster , looks like the community took it upon themselves to release the game
https://store.steampowered.com/app/944010/SWINE_HD_Remaster/

so what the duck, the warsow community did it. let's go.
put up a get-dink-the-duck-on-steam fund, we all toss shit into it, and one of the code wizards (redink1, shevek, dinkdoodler), can toss freedink up and maybe even go the extra mile and contact the duckers over at gog about tossing it over there, too.

You know this thing will become more interesting if "easy mod development" is focused. Make the dev tool easier to utilize, and better than what we have used so far; WDE,DinkEdit, and such. Better include a dev tool in the release, so they'll think that mod development and crafting their own adventure is the highlight.
Edit:
Oops, mod development is already easy!

Not that easy though. I see a problem with not taking the advantage of PNG support, no way to create a tile script without making a script and manually type in coordinates instead of like create a box in an editor and then choose what script should it launch when ya for example step into it, editors not accepting OGG/MOD/IT/XT/S3M files (without making a script to play them!) but just MIDI only.
WinDinkEdit is just literally an easy mode of DinkEdit but as of FreeDink and DinkHD, this thing has never been updated to support the features these two bring in and the biggest insult of all, is not even supported in other OS than Windows. So you are forced to use the uncomfortable and clunky FreeDinkEdit instead.

Well, I find WinDinkEditPlus2.exe works adequately under WINE, so (IMHO) it is not exclusively supported under windoze, though I admit that it would be better if it were 100% platform independent (such as written in Java).

Oh i've used WinDinkEdit 2 on Wine, i've been getting black bars here and there.
couldn't you just have png versions of all your graphics, build your dmod with all the bmp versions, then delete all the bmp versions? maybe?
dunno if it'd go grab the pngs or not.
dunno if it'd go grab the pngs or not.
and the editor won't show that. This is what i've meant by editors not having any support for PNG files
the editor doesn't need it if we can bypass that
At this point might as well say that you have no clue what are the consequences when you wanna bypass that.
well go try it. let's get dat knowledge of png support out there and shit

The hardest part of dmod development is hardness. Har, har, harrr!

That's a good reminder that tells me not to put too much house sprites, cuz you'll MANUALLY place hardness tiles and be eventually forced to relocate the house sprites.
@everyone
Ok, im putting this forum to the top... again. Does it still matter?

You know guys, I have seen claims that Dink is dead years ago. Yet, we are still here. Maybe we are living another dark age and barely any D-Mods are being produced, but we're still alive. And will continue to be here. As for the idea to release Dink on platforms like GOG and Steam, I think it's a good idea. Few people know this game exists, and more publicity on those platforms would benefit the game. To be honest, it would be really easy to get the game on Steam. That platform has zero quality control, and while that means it's easier for a game to be published, it will also mean a good game like Dink would get little visibility because the amount of crappy games that are out there.
"That platform has zero quality control,"
So does Xbox Store, PlayStation Store, Nintendo Store, itch.io, GameJolt etc. etc. etc.
Although Steam is packed with:
- Filters
- Tags
- Steam Curator
- Reviews
and there are some new stuff going on in Steam Labs right now.

I tried out steam labs and was surprised by the video it made up to recommend games , most of them were pretty much what i was interested to play
Once we have multiplayer...
so when is freedink going up on steam
nothing can stop us
nothing can stop us
with beuc gone i dont think thats going to happen
Beuc specifically mentioned that FreeDink needs a new maintainer.
so put freedink on steam, pin a thread in the game's forum called "need a maintainer" and there ya go
Given no one is around to make either dinkhd, freedink or the classic dink on steam , our only other hope can be @JugglingDink and his wonderful 3d port of dink , maybe he can put it on steam
@liquid141:

Okay, but remember what JugglingDink has told us about Dink3D(Unity Project):
I mean in terms of the code I've pretty much just written everything from the ground up to play like the original Dink does. There's none of the original code...
It's not really based on any particular version of Dink. It's just a 3D recreation of the original game's map/graphics along with all the necessary Unity scripting to get the game to function similar to original Dink.
This means that this game will be 100% stand alone and will not run any existing dmods. JugglingDink's great Unity Project might be a great start, but anyone who plays it and then comes to https://www.dinknetwork.com/ might be rather disappointed.
What do you think? Would you still play the isometric perspective version after playing the 3D version for the first time?
I sure would, but then, I'm already a Dink Smallwood fan.

I would be ok with playing the 3d dink on steam you know just for the fun and story, would fallback here for the dmods and the original but man after playing that 3d demo seeing that water graphics and what not, its hard to decide
sigh on the classic games note, diablo is on gog, diablo 2 got a remaster, all 3 gta trilogy games are getting remasters, aoe 1 , aoe 2 , aoe 3 got remasters even that commandos got remasters...
Crazy how back in 2011 when i thought dink would be a great release on steam all those series were dying and about to be lost unable to be played due to old os requirement and yet today all are back except for dink of course.

release dink 3d and freedink as a bundle, then. or separately, but at the same time.
@Skurn;
release dink 3d and freedink as a bundle, then. or separately, but at the same time.
Now that makes more sense to me. We might also make clear that freedink and DinkHD are already available on Windoze, Linux, and other platforms (by adding the best links for each in that package somehow?). We can point out that these versions are "the original Dink", enjoyed by thousands world-wide. Then people might be less disappointed by the isometric perspective versions after playing the 3d version.

let's just collectively forget dinkhd exists
@ Skurn:

I assume that, like me, you are tired of the various incompatibilities and problems the various versions of DinkHD have introduced to our favorite game.
The problem is, (as I understand it), that this is the only version available on some platforms (such as Android or Mac). Is that correct or can we get them to use the more stable freedink on those platforms?

that's only half of it. even when said users or some other new user comes over here, the very first version of dink they find is hd. they have no idea how broken it is and how much more effective other versions are at running dmods until they waste their time wondering why what they're playing is broken and come ask.

... can we get them to use the more stable freedink on those platforms? Is that even possible? If not then perhaps we can ask ReDink to include warnings about using hd wherever you can download it here on the DN. Or maybe we can ask Seth to include that warning in the package itself? I know that a version of HD is still available for Android. Does anyone else know about where else besides the DN you can get DinkHD?
As far as I know, freedink is the only version that remains available as a part of some Linux distros.

there is not chance to salvage dink on mobile. that is the only version available, seth's got full control over its distribution, and the unwashed masses of phone fanatics probably don't know what dink is most of the time, let alone know there are more stable versions out there...on pc, which the common phone user probably know nothing about.
however, we've still got the ability to salvage dink's immediate image here. all it would take would be to redirect any available "hey, ducker, download dink through this link" links to freedink or some such. instead, we get.

and, for reference, how much damage has dinkhd already caused for new or returning players?
dinkhd downloads: 11300
...wait for it
freedink downloads: 1974
how many of those downloads for dinkhd played out exactly as i've presented?
