Re: Farewell to Dukie, an old friend
Old-timers and newcomers alike will be as upset as I am to find that Dukie, a well-established Dinker whose roots can be traced to the very beginning of our humble site and community, passed away June 25. He was 29 years old. I have not translated the many messages on his Facebook profile or the posts from his blog, but I can at the very least confirm that he had been battling cancer. His contributions to the Dink world include The Dink Smallwood Solutions and Dink Smallwood in the Valley of the Talking Trees, not to mention his "eternally-in-progress" D-Mod The Dink Hotel.
I am unsure what else to contribute - though I must note that he will of course be missed dearly - so I present to you material excerpted from remembrance cards distributed at his funeral:
Ik bin dankbaar voor alles.
Ik hou van het leven en van jullie allemaal.
Ik wil dat je gelukkig bent, zoals ik ben.
Ik wil dat je knuffelt, zoals ik doe.
Ik wil dat je van jezelf houdt, want je bent perfect.
Don't worry, be happy.

I didn't know Dukie, but I'm sorry to hear about this. It's always hard to grasp when someone you've only known through the Internet is gone, and once you've done that, it can be painful to continue seeing the things they've posted, reminders that the person is gone. But it can also be gratifying. Dukie's posts and contributions can act as memorials to who he was.
wow so young, Condolences to those that knew him and his loved ones.
(you better not be shootting us Tal!)
(you better not be shootting us Tal!)
I can assure you that this is an actual death of a DN member. He was always a welcome part of the community and on the DN staff in the very early days. I always liked Dukie, and I really miss his presence in the community.
Duckie looked like a pretty nice guy and its very sad to hear that.
@ Striker, I really am sorry (we were talking about Jveenhof in chat last night... so made me wonder) so sorry you all lost your friend.

Heh heh, yeah... my first thought when I heard was, "He better not have been hit by a car."
Condolences to his friends, he was always a nice guy.
This is sad enough to make me stop my flaming. Is Jveenhof dead too?
Tal's back, so maybe I gotta believe him.
And I sent a demo of my DMod as a joke to him yesterday and today he came. Very sorry for you if he was your friend Striker.

heh yeah, at least Tal doesnt have 'Girl bits' (well I dont think he has...) o.O then I would have been more suspicious
Edit: no DD he pretended he was for a while.

I was going to say something else here, but no really need to.
R.I.P. Dukie, may DDC take care of you in the afterlife.
Say, is this the first (known) death of a Dinker, ever? Can't remember there ever being anyone else.

Wow, June 25th was my birthday... what a crappy birthday present from nature... death of Dukie.
R.I.P Dukie.

Big Ted
Another worthy Dinker

Oh yeah, Ted. I remember now.
Someone should put a noting like that similar to Ted's, on Dukie's profile page.

Let us all have a moment of silence for our Dearly Departed Dukie. Let's all stop the childish flame wars now and acknowledge our friend who has bravely fought cancer since last year.
R.I.P. Dukie, may DDC take care of you in the afterlife.
Could we at least make this serious? Don't bring the DDC into a real tragic event for our community.

You know what, I was going to respond to Skorn, but I know better than to ruin this kinda thread.
I've said what I have to say about this incident.

I didn't really know him, but I'll miss him all the same.
Terrible news. I shall play his D-MOD in memory of him.
knowing the pain of someone dying from cancer makes me especially upset. R.I.P.
This news saddens me greatly. I met Dukie a few times IRL, he was a nice guy.
His blog details his battle against cancer. In his last post he mentions a new medicine that gave him new hope to recover from Hodgkins. From most of his posts, I can see he fluctuated a lot from positive thoughts to negative thoughts throughout the whole ordeal. Pretty painful to read.
R.I.P. Daan, you'll be missed.
Bornfree, did anybody dear to you died from cancer? My grandfather did, which makes me even sadder.
yeah. it was my grandpa also and it'll be two years in september
Totally didn't see this coming.
Very sad to hear this...

R.I.P. Dukie may your DDC slaves work for you.
sad to hear this dang shame you died so young.

This is very sad Cancer is awful, R.I.P Dukie...
Don't bring the DDC into a real tragic event
Skull's an athiest so he won't understand. I said what I had to say.
My grandpa died in July 2007 so it's about 4 years from now. Sorry about yours bornfree.
Do all Dinkers die relatively young? Ted 56, Dukie 29? *scared face*

Not really sure what to say... besides that this is a major bummer. Dukie will be missed.
God rest his soul. It makes my heart ache to hear of such loss; it has been sung "If there's a Rock 'n' Roll heaven, you know they've got a hell of a band". The same could be said of the fallen Dinkers.
DinkDoodler, just stop where you're at. Clearly you can't post in this thread without being a jerk off.
But seriously, tragic news. *moment of silence*

I think this should be stickied as a great reminder of Dukie's phenomenal reputation and legendary contributions.
Although it's really terrible, I don't think this kind of news should be stickied. It's not a good trend to make a "graveyard" out of the stickies :/
I never knew him, but it's always a shame for someone to die so prematurely.
My best wishes go out to his friends and family.
This is incredible sad news I never knew he was having a hard time with cancer.
Goodbye my friend, I will miss you

I just saw this in the quotes
"Me sticky? " - Dukie
Maybe he should get a sticky for a week

Not having been here long (or lately) I was never privileged to meet Dukie, but he looks to have been a great person and it's sad when anyone dies at such a young age.
This is so sad..
Still so young, really makes you think.
RIP Dukie!

Yep, it could happen to anyone. What a screwed up world, the cool guys always going away first.

That's very sad news. Had no idea.
I didn't know him that well, but I certainly remember him from the DN in the "olden days". Sad to see a great person and dinker go. RIP.

Bummer, Dukie was a good guy, always helpful and cheerful. RIP, buddy.
I read some of the latest blog entries... indeed interesting reading, but so very sad when you know how it ends
I have known a little about Dukie, his name being mentioned every now and then, sometimes I would see a post by him. Farewell, Dukie. May you find peace in Paradise.
Dukie was one of the kindest more helpful people here in the OG. I always attributed it to the weed.
Rest in peace brother.

Requiest in peace, Dukie. May you enjoy your rest with the great Dead Dragon Carcass' spirit.
Sad news
Never actually knew Dukie, only by name as one of the big old-timers here. Sad to hear

dukie. Sorry to hear about this. The best way to deal with death is not to mourn there passing but to celebrate there life.
Great to hear from you, old friend. Though yes, as has been established, the circumstances are less than desirable.
Glad to see you at least still lurk this place now and then Simon
It is certainly true that this sad event has brought back many of us to say some words.

Dukie's final, of many, good deeds for this world; bringing back old Dinkers, even if just briefly.

Predator
how is Dukie so great?
what the hell did he ever do thats so great

What makes predator think he is so great?
What the hell did he ever do that's so great?
Dukie was a nice guy, ran articles, made a good D-Mod, and had an eternally in progress great D-Mod.
By the way Predator you shouldn't talk about a dead person like that.

Come on! How about respecting the dead? He shouldn't talk about Dukie like that.
Umm... what's he saying? It's kinda hard to read with hash signs and excess spaces all over. And when I come across something that is readable, it comes in all caps which makes it unreadable.
If you had any compassion for Dukie, Doodler, you wouldn't be posting in this thread anymore, especially not arguing against others.
Dukie may not have been around much recently, but he had been around in varying capacities since the start of the community, and his contributions paired with his good-spirited nature warranted recognition.
oh god.. thats horrible. Its horrible when someone dies at the best of times, but its rare for someone on an online community to die.. it just, bleh. I hope he died peacefully and his friends and family are able to cope.
Hey, Cabbage. We need some old-school dudes like you back on the forums.
Dukie,i never knew you but by what everyone says,i can guess you were a great dude to hang with.R.I.P and i wish i could've met you.
Thanks, I still check here out now and then. But seriously, I had to post in this thread. Gah When I first read the title I was like, "no longer being on the network, that all?" then I read and arg, I dont believe in an afterlife so I can hardly wish him all the best. But I know he had an impact here and im sure he did in his real life too. So yeah had to post. its horrible that he died
I'm with SirCabbage. It's really sad to read that a member of the community has died. Rest in peace, Dukie.
Staff should delete preds post's.
Yet again sorry for necromancy, but I feel like a jerk now, I just now read this and I always called him and some other staff members lazy and other insults for leaving their jobs, but I suppose Dukie has a reason so sorry to any staff who have a good reason to derelict their duties.
