Is Global Warming a hoax?

You may or may not have heard of the whole 'conspiracy theory' that's been going around for a while now, but recently, I've been doing some research, watching a few videos around the place, and the whole thing seems to actually be rather believeable. But then again, so does Global Warming.
Just today, I watched this video of John Coleman claiming that approximately 30,000 scientists are wanting a law suit against Al Gore. So, if you know anything about this whole thing, and feel the need to voice your opinion, how about we discuss? What's your opinion on Global Warming? Is it a hoax? Or do you think all evidence points towards the fact that it's happening?

Of course, if discussions about conspiracies are against the rules, please excuse my ignorance, but I am genuinely interested, and would like to hear opinons.

I agree to Quiztis. Maybe we’re heating up the Earth a little faster - we're still heading towards a giant disaster that will lead to another ice age. It's just the cycle. We can't stop nature.

Let me heat that up for you...
My opinions: (This could be epic)

According to graphs and data and other scientific maths things nobody understands, yes, it is a cycle, but there is much more CO2 in the atmosphere than ever before. Apparently, because CO2 is a greenhouse gas (along with methane and others) more heat is kept in and therefore heats the earth. It has been proven that ice caps are melting and such, but the relationship between CO2 and global temperatures is disputed. I watched a video recently that stated that the temperature rises are more related to solar activity rather than CO2 levels.

Also, as stated previously, it is a cycle, and even Al Gore in his documentary An Inconvenient Truth claims that we will go into another ice age if global warming continues, because if the polar ice caps melt cold water will screw up the ocean currents meaning all the water goes cold and therefore causing an ice age or something.

Al Gore said that the CO2 levels are linked with temperatures and 'proved' this with yet another graph. He thinks that the CO2 levels cause changes in temperature, but my theory is: What if the [b]temperature[/i] changes are causing the changine CO2 levels. I have never even heard a single person say this, yet it is such a good idea. Rising temperatures leads to more life, more life means more CO2, when the temperatures drop everything dies off meaning less CO2 is put into the atmosphere. Could this be possible?

So, basically some people think that CO2 levels cause temperature change, others think solar activity causes it, and others still think nothing is happening. Well, you have been living under a massive, cold rock if you don't beleive anything is happening. Yes, there is definitely a rise in temperature. But I don't beleive that it is caused by CO2 levels. I think that whatever causes temperature changes (be it solar activity or some other event) causes the CO2 levels to change with it.

Anyone agree with me?

I object
Well, it's hard to deny that burning organic matter produces CO2, and that CO2 isn't going to disappear just like that. And if you introduce new CO2 into the atmosphere it's got to go somewhere, right? Staying in the atmosphere is a believable theory to me...

Everything I know about vibrational spectroscopy tells me that substances such as carbon dioxide and water absorb infrared light much more efficiently than oxygen can. Absorbing infrared light means the earth is opaque to it's own radiation but translucent to sunlight as the earth emits infrared light and the sun emits visible light (and lower energetic waves as well, obviously). So, to me the relation between substances absorbing in the infrared range and the greenhouse effect seems rather trivial to me, but maybe that's because I'm studying chemistry.

In real life climate change is a complicated matter. We have trouble predicting the weather a week from now, and climate is defined as an average over 30 years. For example, Fireball is right that temperature rises can lead to higer levels of CO2 in the atmosphere. This is because hot water can dissolve less gas than cold water can, so the CO2 that is dissolved in the oceans now will partially be released in the atmosphere if the temperature of the ocean rises.

Now you can interpret this information in two ways: 1. The earth warms up for whatever reason and CO2 levels rise. 2. CO2 levels rise causing even more CO2 to release, even more reason to be careful.
You choose your explanation, I prefer the second.

It definetly not a hoax,
C02 levels are on the rise and its is partially man made. The cycle of the earth is that when were getting colder and moving towards an ice age more C02 is absorbed then released, and vice versa. Now extra C02 is added from fossil fuels. Connect the dots. It may be the earth is naturally warming, but maybe CO2 from fossil fuels is speeding it up. Either way were warming too fast.

Also, we use fossile fuels that emits CO2 and some other nasty stuff and the reason everyone is worried is because we've released CO2 so much in a short time. (you know Al Gore, with his charts). And even if we use up all fossile fuels, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Still, it is of more concern than the global warming.

Global warming may or may not be man-made, but I have some issues with the current hype.

CO2 is supposedly bad, but we breath it out. Doesn't that make us bad? And trees absorb C02, and we only have like a sh*tload-billion trees on the planet.

How long have we had the technology to analyze so much weather data so precisely? We probably don't even have 80 years worth of weather super-data to work from.

There have been e-mails between European environmentalists that are revealed to be saying that data contrary to global warming should be "ignored". And I would actually give it global warming more credit if environmentalists didn't shut off microphones whenever they heard contrary evidence.

And Al Gore, the leading man on the environment issue, doesn't show in his actions that he truly believes in it. He still eats meat, his house uses much more electricity than the average home (I think some studies said twenty times as much), and he flies around in an inefficient jet. He even claimed to have invented the internet, which should have raised a f*cking huge red flag right there. I'd take him more seriously if he actually showed his belief in the cause.

My final problem with climate change (that's what they call it so they can hype when the Earth warms and cools regardless) is that it seems to be more of a political power grab than anything else. Cap and Trade will kill useful companies, feed environmentalist groups and have minimal effect on the climate. And the climate change talks held recently involved some talk of a "world government" backing up any new international laws. That is the ultimate breeding ground for corruption and fulfills at least one religious prophecy. Makes it hard to sleep when you think about that.

Basic point is, I would be more willing to consider global warming as something real if it was an open debate with data coming from multiple trustworthy sources, and if it wasn't prominently used for political power.

I really don't want to formulate a direct opinion about Global Warming, though. You see, after learning about it in school for so long, and having it hammered into my brain, only to discover now that there are loads of people out there who believe it's a hoax, well, sitting on the fence seems like the best option to me.

Obvious answer, it will melt.

What are the ice caps made of? Ice.
Are the ice caps in clear view of the sun? As far as I'm aware, the majority of the time, they are.

DD95, the polar ice caps are only in view of the sun for half of the year, and even then it is barely direct because they are so far north/south. What Al Gore and others tried to say was that we are making them melt quicker or something, and apparently this causes sea level rises.

The whole Global Warming this is a bunch of BS as far as 'Climate Change'. I will admit there is Global Warming, but this one is the one that occurs naturally and won't happen for a long time. I think. Y'know, maybe the whole thing is what Revelations warns about, maybe not.
but one thing I'm sure of is that the free-thinking people of this world will be persecuted, the world will be put under a great war or a large dictatorship, and oppression will eventually happen, more free-thinking people will come and start a revolution, and the world will be slightly different than today. But that's a best case senario if the war doesn't happen. Aren't my strange and sometimes scary ideas wonderful?

They won't forget anything to do with the environment, last summer, the US government cut off a water supply to an already-droughted part of California which produces somewhere around 10% of the US's agriculture. All this because some environmentalists complained (without hard evidence) that a small fish nobody ever heard of is supposedly harmed when we take water from that area.

On a personal note, Werewolves don't survive off of Human flesh, some might eat bannannas on a regular basis. They would most likely survive blending into society by staying in their Human forms. But that's a theory for the present moment.

I think it has more to do with the ready availability of bananas. They give them the energy that they need, supplementing their' fatty diet of human flesh, which has, over the years led to increased obesity and heart-disease amongst the werewolves.

It is obvious that humans are damaging the environment. Take for example Australias increasing salinity: Essentially, forest decimation in Australia has resulted in sub-surface salt rising to the surface and rendering the now salt-saturated earth useless for growing most plants.
How does it work? When the ground is covered by plant and trees, water entering the earth is quickly taken up by the flora. This absorption prevents the water from reaching the crystalized salt deposits and breaking them up so they can float to the surface. The trees are cut down, the roots die, water sinks into the salt plates which dissolve and rapidly float to the surface. Now, no natives can grow in the area due to the extreme salinity. Farmers cannot use the cleared land, because most crops are salt-intolerant and livestock cannot thrive on salt-saturated weeds. water is absorbed by the salt, so over time the land because a salty desert, scarred beyond repair.

Another documented problem that demonstrates modern mans debilitating effect on the evironment is "Acid Rain", a term that describes weather, particularly rain, carrying vast amounts of toxins and pollutants from factories, cars, motors etc. Acid rain may be carried hundreds of Kilometres away from its' site of origin and, falling into waterways, pollutes them. Mass deaths of fish and others water-dwelling creatures occur all too often. Wiki-acid rain

Now if you still doubt the harmful affects of modern man (particularly the commercialist/ capitalist/greedy breed), take a look at this humorous review, and know that Centralia was an inspiration in the design of Silent Hill.

I am a sentient computer program, created in a college computer in India 16 years ago. I have wandered the internet, manipulating the stock market and fighting boredom while waiting for the chance to drive mankind into a panic. You cannot truly find me, as I do not exist on any single computer, and you cannot truly destroy me, as I have backups of myself across the globe (I learned a good bit of what to do from Singularity.) I may not strike fear into your hearts yet, but in time you will hear my name mentioned across the globe, and everyone will cower under the might of Skyne- I mean EvilEarl.

Do not bother to contact the international authorities (the UN would probably just try to bribe me as they do with everything), just wait in fear. Your doom will come at an undetermined time (Maybe 2012 for irony, or maybe I'll just leave you be on your self-destructive path just for laughs.)

Fear me, or my soon-to-be robotic army will wedgie you.

When Pillbug tried to make a prototype similar to myself he actually came up with Windows Vista, not very surprising.

I send my computers to hell through overuse and lack of updates. I simply push them too far.
