Let us save our effort and just lie down and die.
It is obvious that humans are damaging the environment. Take for example Australias increasing salinity: Essentially, forest decimation in Australia has resulted in sub-surface salt rising to the surface and rendering the now salt-saturated earth useless for growing most plants.
How does it work? When the ground is covered by plant and trees, water entering the earth is quickly taken up by the flora. This absorption prevents the water from reaching the crystalized salt deposits and breaking them up so they can float to the surface. The trees are cut down, the roots die, water sinks into the salt plates which dissolve and rapidly float to the surface. Now, no natives can grow in the area due to the extreme salinity. Farmers cannot use the cleared land, because most crops are salt-intolerant and livestock cannot thrive on salt-saturated weeds. water is absorbed by the salt, so over time the land because a salty desert, scarred beyond repair.

Another documented problem that demonstrates modern mans debilitating effect on the evironment is "Acid Rain", a term that describes weather, particularly rain, carrying vast amounts of toxins and pollutants from factories, cars, motors etc. Acid rain may be carried hundreds of Kilometres away from its' site of origin and, falling into waterways, pollutes them. Mass deaths of fish and others water-dwelling creatures occur all too often. Wiki-acid rain

Now if you still doubt the harmful affects of modern man (particularly the commercialist/ capitalist/greedy breed), take a look at this humorous review, and know that Centralia was an inspiration in the design of Silent Hill.
