Never be afraid to ask, but don't demand an answer
You won't contribute/saving lives/anything by saying you're a vegetarian

Not by just saying it, obviously. But by actually being one, of course you do. You think they'll go kill just as many cows if they can't sell half of them because people don't buy them? If sales go down, they will slaughter fewer animals, it's as simple as that.

and you'll only hinder everything and people will get annoyed

Why? How is it a problem for others if he is not eating meat?

and you'll probably be picked on for the rest of your vegetarian life. Which I hope won't last long. Eat meat, for the greater good.

Can you explain? I can understand how vegetarians are annoyed by meat-eaters (although I think they shouldn't be), but why would a meat-eater be annoyed by a vegetarian? The only reason I can come up with, is that they really want to be one themselves, but don't have the discipline to follow their own ethical rules, and don't like to be reminded of that. And in that case, they should get themselves together and not bother other people.

About the subject: I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't eat much meat. I don't agree that you have to slaughter animals to be entitled to eat them. In fact I prefer professionals to do that; they're most likely way better at it. Pushing for more animal-friendly farming is a good thing, though. Currently they're probably only better at it from a money-making perspective.

slaughter cows/pigs/chickens/whatever.

Ducks! Don't forget ducks!
