The Dink Network

Frankly, I am rather disgruntled by the obstinance (laziness) of the Dink Network staff. Here is a list of complaints that I have against the sometimes awesome, but usually poor management here...
1. "Were you upset that the poll was not changed in quite some time?" Oh god, yes, Yes, YES!! For crying out loud, it hasn't been changed for like 2 months already. -Also, that is a terrible poll question because every day that I see it left there I keep wishing that I could change my respones to "verily".

2. The Staffers are never on much

3. They aren't terribly helpful... unless your a living banana or something...

4. Why are ReDink and Tal so obsessed with bananas? Sheesh! It was kinda funny at first, but now it is becoming boring and predictable.

5. Updates are rare.

6. Judging by the inordinate amount of Dinkers that speak only a little English, I believe that someone should have the site be accesible in differant languages.

...I could go on... but at the time being there is no need...

I'm not a staffer but...

1. Yes, i agree that the poll needs to be changed.. but i actually have a suggestion, how about you start a thread asking what would be good poll questions

2. staffers are actually on quite a bit, maybe just not the times that you are on.

3. helpful? depends what you need help with. Most of the time other Dinkers can be just as helpful, if not more so. Post a question on the boards if you need help with something.

4. bananas are yummy.

5. Updates happen whenever any new files come out. considering this game is closing in on being 10 years old now, updates are actually rather frequent.

6. It's not exactly the easiest thing to translate a website to different languages. Besides, it seems that most dinkers speak enough english to play Dink, or else they wouldnt be downloading all the DMODs in english.

It is not that I don't respect them... no, not at all... It is just that I think that they could really add some sparkly to this old site... As a revision... Updates do happen, but I do not see a great spectrum of use of those updates (think of all the dev files that people have made nut have not incorporated into any D-Mods.). Of course, maybe I'm just impatient, but then again, some news and excitement would be nice. Anyway, these are only suggestions made from my opinion, and as such may be subject to change...

1. Then again, why don't we have a staffer that was only in charge of polls, instead of having Tal and ReDink have to do everything.

2. Of course, I don't blame them... I don't exactly devote large amounts of time here, but then again, this isn't MY site.

3. Helpful is a broad term, but I still believe that they haven't actually been quite ready on demand- most of my information I get from other Dinkers- still I am working on trying to find the gist of the site... besides the obvious affiliation with the site.

4. I was never terribly fond of bananas, especially when they get brown and squishy- many of the ladies seen to enjoy the taste of them...I would say more, but I think I would get the scary perception that I may turn into Simon (!!)

5. Dink has been around a long time, and there are many updates present... but the strong limitations of the engine still bother me... the fact that there are limited screens in a map, limited graphics, limited tiles... really the engine was designed to play Dink really well, and leave room for a few small add-ons like Milli Vanilli and Mystery Island...

6. There aren't a lot of viable translations, but I really think that this is a step in the right direction, with the possibility of expanding the network to be within the reach of those who speak limited English. Anyway, there are several Dinkers that are quite fluent in two or more languages, like Tyrisis. I know that translating a bit differant- but I for one have translated a few English paragraphs into Spanish, with only my very limited knowledge of that language.

Again, these are just suggestions. Forgive if the title and scenario seem rude- but I want to catch people's attention...

Maybe that's because you never ask anything? I think they're pretty helpful, as are most 'normal' members.

And that constitutes poor management? I mean if they where eating mangos, then things would deteriorate rapidly.

And who is to blame? The lazy user who never submits something new...

Who would like to translate the site? *waiting for a reaction*

1) Poll has been changed.

2) I visit several times a day, read very nearly every post on the forums (or at least skim through the replies). Granted, Tal is gone this week, but he has about the same behavior.

3) ... interesting interpretation.

4) I have posted 5 forum posts with the word 'banana' in them this year. Tal has posted a total of 8 posts with the word 'banana' in them over the past four years. There is no obsession. Hell, I don't think I've even eaten a banana in... years.

5) Updates generally occur when there are new files. Granted, awards can be hideously past-date (hmm), but it isn't like I have 10 epic D-Mods that I haven't posted yet.

6) That is not going to happen.

The only reason that I'm in charge of The Dink Network is because everyone else left. 8 years ago, there were about a dozen Dink Smallwood web sites, each hosting D-Mods, posting news, etc. Within the span of a year, each and every other site had stopped updating, except mine. Allegations that I hired several robot ninja assassins are completely unfounded.

It is kind of fun to harp on us staff members for being lazy (I do it from time to time), but really... we're not that lazy.

RE: Changing the poll question...

Why not ask other Dinkers to submit (pm) poll questions. After 8 odd years, it kind of hard to come with new interesting questions.

I don't talk much here, but I have been here several years, watched the Dink Network go through many, many changes.
I am always excited when a dmod (whether it be an epic/quest/mini or demo) comes out, as I know alot of them have lives and I myself, cannot make a dmod, worth a darn, and it takes quite abit of time to make a dmod.

The staffers have always been helpful to me, as well as the other Dinkers, when I get stuck on something (which is quite often, and sometimes becomes a very stupid question (IMO).

I am proud to be a Dink Member, and will be a dinker until the day it shuts down.

If you want a new poll, submit a new poll.

Yes, yes, yes.... I appreciate your replies... I hope I have not offended anyone too much. But I thought that this would be an interesting disscussion topic... Thanks to all of you that replied- now onto the next part= were do you get a soda machine- I mean, whenever I want a soda I have to walk to the kitchen or the market at the corner of the street...

So maybe I should take back some of the things I said... (I still think that the option of view the network and playing Dink in Different languages would be neat...)

Hopefully nobody hates me too much, I just felt that this was a topic that ought to be clarified and discussed... I knew people wouldn't like it... but that is beyond the point...

Well, first, you must open a portal to the Plane of Carbonated Beverages (not to be confused with the Plane of Carbon Dated Bevages) by placing 13 of each of your desired beverages in an aluminum box (the larger the better) and offering them to Pep'se, Elder God of Gastronimical Eruptions. You do this by dressing up as either Brittney Spears or Ray Charles by dancing and chanting the devine mantra's he finds most pleasing, such as "You got the right one baby, Uh HUH!" or "Bah bah bah bah baaah!" (the exact wording of this phrase is neigh unspeakable in mortal tongue). You do this until you have passed out from exhaustion and thirst... if Pep'se is so pleased, he may grant you with your own soda machine.

The reason we're not going to do this site in a foreign language is pretty simple... it's just not practical at all. I suppose if you really want to see the site in another language, use Babelfish.

Now, as for Dink in a different language...

Thanks for the link up... it is nice to know that someone had similar concerns as me... I speak only English (some Spanish). So translation is not too important to me personally- I wonder if the site could be translated to the divine language of Pep'Se?

Can't forget about EvilDink... his stuff is all in French... so it is not like this is TOTALLY English-only community, Strike- though I agree that you could use Babelfish or something...

Of course they did. I would expect nothing less. It is their duty to report such aberrant behavior, citizen.

Were you intoxicated or not? If you weren't then yes I guess you're mildly deranged, but if you were then it's just something funny to talk about at parties.
