Honor is now 37, luck 57, have been trying to find the whirlpool for days, and it's just not there. Have done One Tree Island, including the dragon, and talked to everyone in town as well as killed about 3 million sharks and octopi. Does anyone remember if there is another trick to getting this thing to show up?

No, I'm not 100% about being in the right place. Several sources say to go Southwest, but I also noticed the poster in one house says the whirlpool has been spotted East of town, so I'm definitely confused on that point.

Necro'ing this thread just to mention that I was stuck for a long time too. It turns out that you have to talk to the one tree once more before the whirlpool appears.

What a fantastic game.

I agree. Definitely fantastic. But I tell you, "Back From the Grave" would have been even better if it got finished! Maybe they ran out of ideas for it? Sometimes I'm tempted to finish it myself.

It's still fun to play, for all we know he could of put a really hidden secret that unlocks the rest of the story.

This was the first D-Mod I played when I picked up Dinking again recently. It's a pretty fun game. Bit grindy, especially since some of the secrets are hidden so well early on in the game. But with FreeDink's speedup tab key... entirely manageable.

And the sound design hurts my ears.

But I digress...

But what if someone made a much better dmod than this? It is possible. The most it could get is 0.3 higher in score. They didn't leave much room at the top.

The score probably just reflects the scope of the dmod at the time, rather than the quality.

Yeah, I think it had a lot to do with the fact that it's technically impressive and pulls off pretty much everything that D-Mods could do at the time, as well as being long-anticipated and made by a guy who knew what he was doing. The new graphics blend right in with the official ones too.

A lot about it is good, but that doesn't make it exempt of criticism, of course.

My only complaints, not enough uberness or visits to the land of cheese. Now we just need to think which is better, Pilrgrim's Quest, SOB, or Dink Smallwood(Seth's original)?

For me it would go:
1. The original game
2. CC2: Scarab
3. Pilgrim's Quest

I haven't played SOB

I liked the Isle of Crotch and parts of Stone of Balance. Pilgrim's Quest, not so much. Something about that dmod just bores me to tears.

Isle of Croth is fun. I love trying to get powerful when you are a wimp and all the enemies are way stronger than you. And then when you finally get powerful, you can get your stats to absurd levels. It feels very open and has a great atmosphere to it.

Stone of Balance is interesting and unique, but very frustrating. It would probably be more fun to play with a walkthrough, but that's not my style. I like the episodic nature of it and the varied locales, but hate that if you miss something you are usually out of luck.

Pilgrim's Quest is awesome but just like Stone of Balance I always get stuck and don't want to look at a walkthrough, and then I get frustrated. But the new stats and big world make it fun until then. And at least this time, you can backtrack.

My reviews in a nutshell.

O yea, Stone of Balance is terrible with punishing you for things that are very easy to miss. I'm still bitter at the game for making me miss hellfire in the first chapter, only to realize so in the third chapter or thereabouts. (And then I replayed the whole game, darned maze world and all.)

I don't like using guides either, but after that I made sure to skim the walkthrough occassionally, just to make sure I wasn't getting stealth-boned elsewhere.

I'd say I preferred Stone of Balance, while it took a while to make sure I got through everye single detail & then miss something so I'd look through the guide, it was still great. The lands I got thorugh were all well designed, but if anything it would be nice if Simon did put some alternatives to some things or hidden ways through. I also liked the massive amount of secrets, it made me feel like I got even stronger & stronger, then I had to face something that still gave a challenge if I wanted to get some bonuses. My only complaints would be the *Spoiler* land with those religous people(I can't remember the name), mainly since they deduct my hard earned stats away & take away my loot, but the game was still easy enough to play through until I got stuck even with the help of the walkthrough with trying to get my remaining stuff through by talking to some tree I couldn't find. *Spoiler Over* Also the only other complaint would be the lack of riddles like in Pilgrim's quest, the second riddle still makes me laugh.

So what do we do that helps prevent the user from getting bored?
btw: I liked Isle of Croth also.

We could do an update that adds illicit content, or make some way for people to get hints better. Maybe a warning might help as well, like when you are about to leave a land it could warn you if you've missed more than half of it's secrets. Adding the third part of the trilogy can also manage to make people want to play through the first two fully to understand the story as well, but Simon is most likely dead. Does anyone know what happened to him?

Those are all good ideas. I like discussions about what makes a good DMOD. I hope Simon isn't dead. Maybe he just moved on to better things.

Probably some more animation. And yep, checked and the most recent thing he's done is Vik the Viking in 2013-2014. Apparently, he worked on Walking with Dinosaurs 3D as well.

Someone watch that stuff and see if there's any subtle references only we would understand.

Or more fancy: a special screen or escape menu option that could display your per-land stats for obtained secrets. And a way to go back to earlier areas, maybe?

And editing the sound effects so the volume isn't so extremely high. And make the special status screen pop up immediately instead of it waiting for the sound effect to finish.

Holy crap. It's DaVince! Oddly, you were just on my mind the other day when I was thinking about Dinkers who aren't around anymore. Weird coincidence.
