O yea, Stone of Balance is terrible with punishing you for things that are very easy to miss. I'm still bitter at the game for making me miss hellfire in the first chapter, only to realize so in the third chapter or thereabouts. 
(And then I replayed the whole game, darned maze world and all.)
I don't like using guides either, but after that I made sure to skim the walkthrough occassionally, just to make sure I wasn't getting stealth-boned elsewhere.
