Where does that random quotos at the bottom of the Page come from...
I sometimes wonder if there is something (program) that records your real life dialogues and put them here.

ANSWER ME..

They're picked from a quotes.txt file somewhere on the server, and only funny quotes are put in that file.

Actually, the original quotes from Dink Smallwood were originally taken from a quotes.txt file, but I would assume they are now in one of the tables in the DN database.

Let me heat that up for you...
all you need is a knowledg of how to look things up. do a google search for 'how to make random qoutes appear on a website' or something and then copy+paste into HTML documents. of course, you have to be able to edit it slightly to put in your quotes.

also, if you have macromedia/adobe (buying something because you're scared, hey?) dreamweaver, i believe there is an extension that allows you to generate random quotes on your page. but you have to have a bit of knowledge on how to edit them because it will only add them once, you cant just run the thingie again to put more in. you have to edit HTML to do that. so i recomend starting out with at least two, so you know how the quotes join up.

Since all true web authors write their HTML by hand, just like real programmers write their code by hand, there's really no point in touting WYSIWYG tools, as they all create inferior results compared to doing something on your own. They *can* be used for introductory learning, but as they create inferior code, they should not be used for anything else.

Ha ha, I remember a good quote:

"So this is where the quotes come from? Directly off this message board? ... This isn't gonna become a quote is it?" ~ Scratcher

I think it was Scratcher that said that...

How many times has this question been answered before? You know, I think there should be some big banner on the News page, saying:

QUOTES COME DIRECTLY OFF THIS MESSAGE BOARD!! DON'T ASK THIS QUESTION ON THE FORUM OR YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS WILL BE SPAMMED!! Thank you.

In risk of repeating myself, Dreamweaver, like all other WYSIWYG web authoring tools are mediocre at teaching you the very basics of the trade, but to be a professional web developer, one must know HTML and CSS in and out, or at the very least, know how to figure out every little thing about HTML and CSS, and the only way to get that knowledge is by writing it by hand.

If you make a web site using Dreamweaver, it only shows your incompetence.

I'm bagging DreamWeaver. You totally wasted your money on that magazine.

If you really want to learn something and have total control over your website, learn HTML, CSS and PHP (or any language that can do the same as PHP, like Python, ASP or Java Server).

Don't do that, he already knows HTML (and trust me, you would be amazed at how much time he puts into making other peoples lives worse than his) and if any one bags Macromedia, he, well, gets, kinda pissed....

well i could have gotten it entirely for free off the internet, but i din't have it at that time. And the mag helped me to shape CHD as you (might) see it now!

and it wasnt only macromedia, it was the tutorials.
<font color=#666666>i can prove i know html</font>

edit: i'm not actually sure if i can use hex values inside the font command like that but it should work. i wonder what that colour looks like anyway?
December 17th 2007, 03:56 PM
spike.gif
You being unsure about how to change the font colour doesn't really convince me about your html skills. To do it properly you should add quotes around the hex code... The colour would be some darkish shade of grey.

IMO, knowing a certain language is when you can write that language without constantly having to refer to a tutorial or a list of available commands- Sure, HTML is super easy to do and learn like that but I wouldn't dare say I knew it if I couldn't make a website independently.

The font element is not a legal HTML element (It is a proprietary Netscape invention) and should never be used. CSS should be used for that.

And most of the users who do have their own quotes are probably always looking at the same quote.

Oh, and I could imagine that there would be some problems implementing it.
