Turning mp3s into MIDIs - musician request!

November 29th 2007, 06:22 AM
dinkdead.gif
Is there any musical person around here who knows how to make good MIDIs and has some spare time on their hands?

I've found some nice music I'd like to use but it's mp3 and I can't find a MIDI version.
The music is copyleft, open source or whatever you call it so no problems there. (License)

Thanks!

Why not learn yourself? If you use Linux, download and install Rosegarden. It's an awesome program. Probably the best one around today. It's pretty easy to learn, so why not try it.

"Nobody" uses Linux. Hehe. Well, I do. And maybe you do, since you suggest a Linux program... but statistically, you can assume nobody uses Linux.

I recall using NoteWorthy when I was in Windows, though not being a musician, I never really managed to make any music.

I would, and I've been looking into it but I don't have the sheet music and I can't do it by ear, even fairly simple piano pieces.

And I don't use Linux

Real lurkers don't appear on the lurkers list.
Well, most of such programs don't work well enough to be used for a game, anyway.

Well, get it!

I doubt you'll find anyone around here good enough to do that sort of thing. I'm just getting started with MIDI creation, so I may not be able to help you for a while.

Yeah, I know what you mean. And I do use it.

Heh, my friend's Father works using Windows, and he told him that Linux was pronounced Lie-nux. Now every time we talk about it, he says lienux. It's really annoying! And his Father was being serious!

Well... considering that it was named after Linus Torvalds, and the most common pronunciation Linus is Lie-nus, he got confused.

But Lie-nux just sounds fabulous.

The proper pronunciation of Linux is Lee-nux, like in the name "Lee". Or like the "lea" in lease. Leanux.

It's pronounced like that in my language under any condition anyway.

DinkDude95, when you're on a forum like this you should usually assume people use Windows, or at least recommend one for each OS you have ever used a MIDI creation program on.

I use Modplug Tracker, even in Linux (through Wine), though it's more of a module music creator and not a MIDI creator. You CAN make MIDIs in it though.

Might change if Phoenix manages to get his Linux port out...

Yup. But for now it's mostly a Windows-only game anyway, so 98% of the userbase is currently probably a Windows user.

I don't care. Linux is better.

Sparrowhawk, get Ubuntu Studio and install it on your computer! It comes with a whole heap of audio creation programs, (including Rosegarden) 2D and 3D modellers, and a bunch of awesome stuff!! And it's all set up for you!

It's not my port. I don't want to take credit away from the person doing this. If you want to thank anyone for porting Dink to Linux, thank Beuc.

Amen to that, man. Would never want to go back to Windows voluntarily. I have to use it at work, but that's only because my boss and colleagues all are Microsoft's whores. At work I need to leave my principles at home, though. After all, they pay me to do a job, not to complain about the status quo.

"I don't care. Linux is better."

That's partially a matter of preference (even though Linux is way better and faster with memory and process management).

I like Windows (Shock! Horror! ), although I admit I've never seen Linux. I know the way Windows works, and I wouldn't want to learn a new OS's ways. Same reason I wouldn't want Vista right now (apart from the many bugs etc).
But I do use Firefox, and no way am I going back to IE6 again!

And I always thought it was pronounced Lie-nux...

I use Windows, have never tried Linux, use Firefox and don't see that much difference to Internet Explorer. My father uses IE, as he is much more used to it.

There's so little difference in usage of the two that I don't quite get that. But the extendability in Firefox makes all the difference.

Tabs is the main reason for me, plus the extendability. I also like the look of it better. I would've got IE7 but couldn't get it to work so tried Firefox and stuck there.

You know, if you're happy with the way Windows works, you're free to stay. By all means. The reason I switched to Linux was that I was sick and tired of Windows with it's slowness, crashing, having-to-reinstall-every-sixth-month-ness, and so on. The reason I'm staying in Linux is because it's fast, responsive, never crashes on me, I don't ever need to reinstall, it has a decent command-line toolbox, it does not have a registry (*shivers*), it's close to 100% safer from viruses and hijacking, etc.

As I said, the only place I use Windows is at work because that's what my boss' company develops for. I do have Linux on a USB-stick though, which I can bring anywhere and boot wherever I go. Nice indeed.

Don't forget the fact that with the package manager you can download about a million games and pieces of software. And it's all free. And you can set it to focus-on-mouse-hover much easier than on Windows. (It is possible on Windows, you need to download TweakUI. Sorry, no link!) Focus-on-mouse-hover is awesome.

I do use Windows, but only for Dink stuff, and some music and videos. Mainly because of the fact that it loads much faster on my PC.

Focus-on-mouse-hover is awesome.

I don't care for it, but each to their own, you know. The nice thing about Linux is that it has been created to be configurable. Windows has been created to be as hard as possible to configure. That's why all the fun settings are hidden in the registry behind nonsense GUIDs like {88FE2C22-BB88-8B68-C72D-E20E5C408749} and in other weird non-guessable places. Sometimes you even have to create non-existing registry keys to get the setting you want! User-friendly my ass.

In Linux, on the other hand, you find settings in configuration files, or if you're lucky, there's even a GUI program for it. It's never intentionally hidden, at least.
