Re: New Laptop
My desktop has been good to me over the past two years but I have now decided to invest in a laptop. I haven't delved that much into laptops so I really don't know what to look for. I just need a laptop (not huge, if I wanted a giant laptop I would just lug around my comp) that I will be able to do my school work/Programming work with. Im a video and music buff so that would be a plus if it came with good vid card and hard drive.
I was initially thinking...Sony Vaio. But once again I know nothing about their laptops. HP has always been good to me so I guess I should look into their lot also.
Anyway, just looking for any advise anyone can push me way.

In any case, I'd go for something with 2 CPUs or more. Nothing beats the good response your lappy will make because of it.
Make sure you also get one with a real video card rather than an integrated one - and make sure it's NVidia. That stuff is top-notch.
When it comes to storage space, laptops can't provide all that much. The most I've seen is 200 GB or so (my laptop is now almost a year, so not quite accurate anymore). I'd get an external harddisk next to the laptop if I were you.

I use a Dell XPS M1210 which is great for me. It has 2 CPUs (2Ghz), loads of RAM and Nvidia graphics so it handle pretty much whatever I throw at it.
Depending on what you use it for, you don't need anything too fancy. Shop around a bit for a good price as well, don't buy it directly from Dell or HP or whoever. Try eBay perhaps?

I clicked the link without thinking and as soon as I saw that title bar across the top I went ahead and tapped the back button...no use in dreaming.
Has anyone heard anything bad about the Vaio's performance? I've looked through reviews (or atleast tried to find them) and the more I look at the laptops the more I like them.
[Edit] Vortex = Not a Dell person. Dude...I'm not getting a Dell.

I got a laptop too, recently. It's an MSI. I didn't wanted anything spectacular, because most of the time I surf the web, chat, listen to music, watch music and write simple programs. None of these require great performance. I have one CPU AMD Sempron 3400+(1.8Ghz), 2GB RAM, NVIDIA Geforce Go 6100. I think it's suitable for my needs, and it only costed me about 700$.
I have a Dell Laptop... I would not recommend them.
Eh? They are not *that* bad, overall. Better than some other places you can buy computers from. Service is fairly good, I've got no complaints.
My first comp was a Dell and it was a hell hole to the very end. Then I upgraded to compaq (if you call that an upgrade) and finally came to my senses and put a little extra money into a very nice HP. It has served my needs thoroughly.
Oh well, there really isn't anything wrong with a dell that is not overcomable but my HP has just put the old dell I had to shame so much that I don't think I can go back... Even if I don't get the Vaio I want I will probably fall back to HP for a laptop...

Eh, I've had a decent experience with my dell sofar, but then again, I also got a fairly good deal. That, and 'completecare' has made me a happy customer.
Yeah. Me too. I'm still stuck with a bulky P3. I remember when I was about 6, I had a laptop. Well, I shared it with my older brother. We were using Windows 3.1. Ah... those were the days...
I still have Windows 3.11 and am able to run it on my high end laptop. Hooray for DOSBox!

You still have 3.11? It actually works? Dang, I tried to install it on my old PC. Heh heh, lets just say I needed a new one after that.
Like I said, hooray for DOSBox. Look up your old Windows 3.11 diskettes, copy ALL files on ALL disks to a directory on your harddrive somewhere, mount that as A: in DOSBox, mount a safe directory (like C:\Win31) as C:, and install Windows 3.11. It'll work if you mount the same directory (C:\Win31) and start Windows 3.11 in DOSBox.
In case you didn't know what DOSBox is: DOS emulator.

Well, that's some nice information. But I doubt I'll ever try and install anything other than XP or Linux again.
What do you actually use 3.11 for, though?

You don't really install it, well, only virtually and totally out of the OS's or even bootloader's control.
I use it for fun. For some experiments. To play MIDIs through an Adlib port. And to use some Windows 3.1-only software. I just like the old stuff.
