Ah, doesn't making d-mods make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside? Upon playing through Cloud Csatle 2 again, I keep finding all these little things I'd forgotten about. Let me explain...

1) My First D-mod: There is a book case in the library which tells of wizards teleporting people to Salamak as a punishment for annoying them. This is actually a reference to the first d-mod I ever made (before Cloud Castle), that was entitled...Scarab.
At the beginning of this d-mod, Dink had an argument with a wizard, who teleported Dink into a desert to piss him off.

2) The Spin-Off: The never released spin of d-mod, Nerux (where you controlled Dinks foe from the first Cloud Castle contained a mini-game where you controlled Thargo the Giant Pig, and had a time limit in which you had to eat all the villagers from Alessa's home town - The same map was used for the "Alessa's Memory" sequence in CC2.
This d-mod also featured more of Fabian and Alessa's past, creating a nice bit of back-story, and giving the d-mod series a bit more continuity (for us anyway!).

3) The Bad Guy: Monkeynuts, whilst originally named this as a bit of a joke, has become such a wonderful villain in my mind. A she dogin' and thoroughly megolomaniacal fairy, hopelessly bent on world domination and with a serious addiction to coffee, Monkeynuts is my favourite character from the series thus far.

Things like this make me very happy. It just feels nice to have created a pretty cohesive Dinkiverse of our own (though I don't know if others would agree).

The ongoing creation of Cloud Castle 3 only reinforces this, with Dink's village from Cloud Castle, as well as Alessa's hometown all being visible on the same world map.

Do other d-mod authors have similar in-jokes, and do they also have many things for their own Dinkiverse (SOB Dinkiverse, DD Dinkiverse) that only they are aware of?

Hmm?

Chop your own wood, and it will warm you twice.
I created a single pretty horrible DMOD. So horrible that people didn't reviwed it(except for MiloBones). Now, I'm trying to improve it, and I work with a guy called B12, but we didn't made important progress.
I'm too busy with math to work too much on DMODs.

Man, I'd forgotten how useful mod wands were.

Scarab was technically the first d-mod Sabre finished, as it had full map, a complete storyline and could be played from beginning to boss. It wasn't very good, but it was pretty novel. We based cc2 on Scarab in the mistaken belief it would result in a quick and enjoyable mod, not too much larger than Cloud Castle, that would pave the way to the trilogy. I hadn't heard of the term "feature creep" back then...

As I recall, the very first d-mod that he made was a two-screen affair that essentially featured Dink washing on a riverbank after a drunken night out. The only thing you could do was to read a poster announcing a festival to celebrate the king's daughter's coming of age, who was, IIRC, described as "18 and totally up for it". Actually, it was probably 16 or even younger. Hey, how about you base the plot for CC3 on that one Sabre?

Scarab vanished several hard drive crashes and a couple of computers ago, I'm afraid. We do still have Nerux kicking about... not too likely that one will ever be finished, and I'm not sure how worthy it is of releasing. It was pretty much abandoned when we realised it didn't have any gameplay.

Don't tempt me, Arik. Don't tempt me.
As for all my unreleased d-mods... I will send them to you in the next few days, DaCabbage. I've deleted a lot of them, but still have a few; Valhalla, Gem, AKT4, "Comedy", Broken, Heroes of the Sword, and Spookhouse.

A couple are only 2-3 screens long, but most take up at least 20 mins gameplay. Maybe. But I might not send you AKT4... I may finish that one day. Honestly.

I made one d-mod that only made it to demo then I gave up on it. Since then I have tried to make 3 different sequals each failed but now I think I can finally make a sequal.

Well, I make the characters in my dmods based on real people that I know. I also reference Resident Evil 4 a number of times in my dmods, just because it rocks. I'm also combining a few dmods I never finished ("Necropolis", "The Alton Inn", even some elements of "Rip Van Dinkle") into Outlander.

Outlander is seriously going to kick ass, if it ever gets finished. Thanks to the demo, I'm looking forward to it more than any other dmod. The dark humor vein needs more tapping.

I only have 1 insiders-joke for the people that have played that game with the little green voice.
You should talk to the bottle shelf in the farmer's home.

I dunno about in-jokes in the SOBiverse... but once I went down the path of making a sequel to SOB I would put in a few references... although I remember putting in references in SOB to Isle of Croth, or some such thing...

Back story abounds in my head in SOBiverse - I think it helps to have that when making a story type thing, be it game, movie - whatever. But I know there's nothing too deep in SOB or PQ. Most of it was 'borrowed' from many sources ... both contemporary and mythological, with a bit of corruption (like change a letter, add a letter).

I do re-play the games every so often (usually when someone is stuck or has found some weird bug) and get reminded of all the back story and "depth" that is relevant to me. It makes me smile - especially Story 4 in SOB. I felt like having a go at religions etc.

A reasonably interesting thread if I do say so myself, and we have wealth of newer d-mod developers who might be able to give some cool insights into their own worlds.

GO!

Hmm ok well Sabre I am nowhere near your league in dmod making - not by a long shot - but I thought it interesting that all 4 of the dmods and some of the graphic stuff I have currently in varying stages of production, stem from comments on the forum or graphics I have made as a joke in response to something posted here. So even though this place is broken as hell right now, I suppose it is still inspiring someone to do something... (well I hope so at least)

Love! True love!
Currently I'm working on making my world more in-depth. I'm not cutting corners with this one, and I'm adding things like breakable dishes, multiple sidequests, and improved characters. I realized that HSL2 will be the first actual Dinkiverse I've made, and not just linear areas connected only by one-way cutscenes, so I'm trying to make it a good one. At the moment though, in-jokes are few.
